John and Paul's voices blended together perfectly. Then throw George's much under rated harmonies and every song is wonderful. Every piece of the band fit together so well no wonder almost every song they recorded is hit worthy.

Paul was the only Beatle who liked performing live. Well maybe Ringo liked playing live. John hated it. One of the great spectacles in music is McCartney doing live and let die live. Check it out on youtube if you've never seen it.

This is SO 1964, and you know what? It still gets me excited. I don't exactly want to scream, but I do want to hold somebody's hand. If you think about it, it's not corny at all -- it's what people do when they get married, for example. There's a deepness in that which critics of pop weren't ready to acknowledge at the time. And it's live, not lip-synched! I get chills.

I may be old now but I can’t believe that young people don’t want to hold hands. That first date in a restaurant somewhere romantic… isn’t there a moment when you want to reach out and touch the hand across the table?? Young people surely cannot have become so glib and shallow! 😮 The Beatles were expressing something not usually said, just acted on.

Unfortunately on this performance from the End Sullivan Show, the night America was introduced to the band, on this first three song set Johns microphone was malfunctioning. His voice should be the dominant vocal on this song. You're mainly hearing Paul's vocal and John's is like a whisper. It wasn't until the second set that they fixed Johns microphone. In 1964 the technology wasn't very good yet on live performances but The Beatles definitely did a soundcheck earlier in the day. This error should have never happened. The Beatles had only two track tape machines to record on when they recorded their first Lp "Please Please Me" released in March, 1963. "I Want To Hold Your Hand" released on November 9, 1963 was their first recorded on 4 track and that's all they had until 1968 when 8 track was available. Nobody's for sure but "Hey Jude" was probably the first of their songs recorded on 8 track in 1968. What The Beatles accomplished in seven short years between 1963-69 and where they took music that no one saw coming and with the limited technology they had to work with is mind boggling. Greatest most influential band ever and it ain't even close. Peace ❤

One story that I read was that they marked the volume on their speakers with chalk. Then, after they finished the sound check and left, a cleaning lady came... and erased their marks!

Their "This Boy," singing live on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1964 is absolutely phenomenal. Lennon's voice, from low to that raw high voice and back to low, is fantastic.

This is from the first Ed Sullivan Show. It is said that so many people watched on TV that the crime rate that night was the lowest in 50 yrs., and no teenagers were arrested in Washington. Actually, guitarist Les Paul invented multi-track recording in 1945, but most people were still using, and sometimes combining 4-track machines, until 8-track recorders became available in 1968. Anyone who grew up listening to the Beatles should watch the 2 Rutles movies, about a fictional English rock group, which was a collaboration between Eric Idol of the Pythons and SNL personnel.("All You Need Is Cash" and "Can't Buy Me Lunch") They have a great selection of songs that almost sound like Beatles outtakes from different stages of their development.

Well technically speaking, even 4 track was already "multitrack". And they did the track bouncing trick, downmixing track 1-3 onto track 4 to free up 1-3 again and so on. There is a great book by the late Geoff Emerick with a lot of technical insides about the Beatles recording sessions, still very entertaining too. It's amazing how much of what's considered absolute recording basics today was invented back in the 60s at Abbey Road and a few other studios. And an big +1 for "The Rutles". Hilariously funny and great music. AFAIK some of those songs have even been released as "unreleased Beatles songs"-bootlegs and fooled some Beatles collectors back in the days.

@@mrtveye6682 Another song, referring somewhat to Lennon's post Beatles primal screaming days, having a good Lennon impersonation and some memorable lines was "Magical Misery Tour", which was on a 1972 National Lampoon comedy record. I thought it was hilarious until he got shot.

you should also watch "Backbeat", a film made about their Hamburg days. The story and music are great, as is the inclusion of the story of the "Fifth Beatle" Stu Sutcliffe. Some of the music was written by Dave Grohl.

Their early recordings have that sense of innocence about the first love, and also any other romantic song through their career as a group is very thoughtful, with beautiful lyrics, something that doesn't exit today anymore. When you said this is not perfect singing, you can notice that those imperfections are nonexistent in the studio version, but live performances couldn't be improved at that time, also they became more and more polished over the years. There are much more to enjoy about these boys, especially those songs less known by many like 'It's only love', 'You like me too much', 'I will', 'Good night', each one with one of them on lead vocals.

I agree and I would like to add that the imperfections only add to the charm, not take away from it. Some do show up on the Lps, because Producer George Martin deemed that the take captured the excitement of the song and to have them do it again make make it stale sounding.

Also George Martin was a genius and the perfect combination with these guys, no doubt.

I remember watching this in black and white on a Sunday evening on Ed Sullivan, I was a month short of my 11th birthday. We could not hear the music over the screaming and apparently neither could the Beatles, which make this performance even more amazing.

This was at the beginning of the career, a live set ( and less than 2 years into being in the charts). They didn't have monitors to hear what they're singing and still wouldn't be able to hear the music about the noise. Ringo ( the drummer) has said he only knew where they were in a song by the lads body language, cos he couldn't hear the lads singing. Shows you how great they were that they could still be in tune! - despite ot hearing one another

Beth - I bought the .45 of this song along with 'She Loves You' when I was a freshman in High School. Grew my hair long and was expelled my junior year. Kept it long though college until I had to enter the business world. After retirement went back to it. No need to say, the Beatles changed my life. ❤❤❤ ❤❤

when I was 16 I lived on a Canadian Military Base with my parents. I started growing my hair and was offered the choice of the door or the barber. Took the door and kept my hair well into the next decade. Never did wear it really short and now in my 70s it's long again. Thanks, Dad - biggest favour you ever did me. ☮

I'm 67 and there was no way in hell my father was going to let me grow my hair long and kept it short throughout my career as a civil engineer. Fast forward to 2020 and I'm newly retired when COVID hits and the barber shops close. Options were buzz it myself and look like cast member of One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest or grow the George Carlin ponytail. Now it hasn't been cut since July 2020 and my ponytail's halfway down my back.

This was their first appearance on American TV, on a program called "The Ed Sullivan Show." I was five at the time and still remember watching it. My sister and I were so excited to see them (along with 73 million other Americans who tuned in). Saw Paul in concert last year and he still gives his all when performing.

The Beatles were intelligent young men with a fantastic sense of humor. Super witty. They were fun to watch and their music was driving, made you feel great. I was 9 or so when this came out, and we played this song as a skit in Cub Scouts at a theater, a competition between 6 dens, and we won 1st place playing this song! I was one of the Beatles. I knew right then I wanted to play guitar and be in a band, and I did that. Never got famous, but I had a fantastic time. They inspired millions like me.

Every baby boomer kid in the USA has a special place in their musical hearts for this song. It was so new, so fresh, and just so delightful. And what followed over the next few short months proved these 4 were no one hit wonders. And even at that, no one could have predicted how they would change the musical and cultural landscapes of the world throughout the 60's and beyond.

At 85 I remember seeing them in a small Northern England movie cinema.They had just started and their "Love love me do" had just hit the charts.The thing I remember was the out of control screaming of the girls!They were screaming,shouting and fainting Plus throwing jelly babies (Sweets) at them I think Paul said he loved Jelly babies 😭😂😭😂😭😂😭😂😭

You should check out some of their performances of "Twist and Shout." That one really showcases John's vocal abilities. He has one of the best raspy voices in rock music. I particularly like the Royal Variety performance, but all the available versions are good.

This was the Ed Sullivan Show in the US. It was the biggest thibg ever! Everyone was watching and so excited tobsee them. My Father set up a reel to reel recorder and taoed the audio with a lousy mic in front of the old black and white TV. I still have the tape today!

Ringo has said in interviews that the audiences in these performances were so loud screaming that they couldn’t hear each other. He had to use Paul John or George’s movements to try to stay in time with them.

Despite the fact that many regard the Beatles latter music as their most impressive products (and they are, from the point of view of musical sophistication), THIS is what gave us Beatlemania and changed pop music, as well as much of the rest of human culture. This is still one of my favourite Beatles songs.

This is from the Beatles first performance in the US, on the Ed Sullivan show. John’s mic is out and so sounds like Paul is the dominant singer. But actually it was more of a John song as evidenced on the album recordings.

This was from The Beatles 1st American appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, Feb. 9,1964 which set records (pun intended) for highest percentage of tv viewers tuned into a show - at that time, John and Ringo were 23, Paul was 20, and George would turn 20 2 weeks later....just amazing, so young, so talented and along with Elvis - the 2 biggest performers in rock history....yeah yeah yeah YEAH

To REALLY experience this early Beatle masterpiece, YA GOTTA PLAY THE ORIGINAL 45 VERSION!! The Sullivan show performance was visually terrific, but the audio was pretty so-so. The Beatles DID THIER BEST THOUGH!! But the original recording was SO electric, SO pulsating with erotic PPUNCH!! The Beatles said it straight to the point. I LOVE YOU, I WANNA HOLD YOUR HAND BABY!! The harmonies were amazing, the accents were perfectly performed. This song made the world BELIEVE the Beatle BUZZ!! ( And nothing like this song had ever been done before in 1964! )

I heard "I Want To Hold Your Hand" in the fall of 1964 as an American living in Stuttgart. My cousin was in Hamburg in 1962 but doesn't remember hearing them. Things changed so much so fast. We're still fans of their music.

nice analysis and commentary. this was very early in their career; 1964. i it was their first live performance in the states. but historically is the best way to fully understand the beatle phenomonon. its what they became, how they transitioned and maintained their innovative edge that puts even this song in a different light. this song and the beatles would just be seen as one hits wonders, passing entertainers, if it wasn'f for their entire catolgue through the 60s. this was the beatles' 5th single in britain and their 4th number one in a row. then they went to new york and "said "you ain't seen nothing yet." from "love me do" in 1962 to 1969's "abbey road" is a journey to behold in awe. for 6 solid years they just kept getting better... and better. this was truly something very special that happened here. and the entire world got to experience it!

The tape transfer from years ago slowed the tempo so what you're hearing is 1/2 step LOWER than the record. The pitch is in Gb Instead of G major, like the record. Unfortunately, as another poster noted, you can't hear John very well in this performance. However, if you listen real closely, it is John who is singing the note ABOVE Paul on the word "Hand". In G major, Paul sings an F#4 and John sings a B4 which is 2.5 steps HIGHER than Paul's note. One of the Beatle's formulas was for John to briefly sing ABOVE Paul and then work his way downward. There are MANY examples of this on various recordings & live performance when you can hear John very clearly. BOTH singers are TENORS. Paul is a lyric (high) tenor & John is a dramatic tenor (low tenor). John had a fantastic falsetto that he used many times.

John takes on a more dominant vocal role in both of the movie title tracks: ":A Hard Day''s Night" & *Help", the latter being one of his favorites, as he felt it applied to him at that stage of his life. (As did the later, "Nowhere Man" ).

This record was their first release. Their insane popularity brought them to the Ed Sullivan Show. Sunday night 7 or 8 central time. I still have this album, I have all of them actually. All purchased within a week or two of their release. My grandson, a vinyl collector, freaked when I pulled the poster insert from the White Album.

Some of their best songs are also some of the simplest. I might be wrong, but it seems like John is singing lead with Paul doing a back-up but started to harmonize like it was improvised at the moment. When I was five or six, we had neighbors whose daughter would babysit us, and she was a huge Beatles fan and she exposed us to them which I am so grateful for.

yes, but as a drummer let me explain: Paul's instruments were specifically left-handed, with the bass string on top as per the norm. Ringo's kits, though, were always right-handed, meaning set up for a right hand lead (eg, the snare was on the right side.) In playing a RH kit the lefty Ringo was effectively playing cross-handed, leading with his left. That provided a very unique sound and opportunity for some of the marvelous and innovative back beat he provided.@@waynej2608

Ringo was a under-rated drummer. Is sorry. Much of his work is pretty basic for the first few albums and after that his work is very unconventional. Rubber Soul and onward pretty much nothing he does is your basic 2/4 drum beat.

Paul and John were great duo harmonizers and we had quite a number of them in the 50's and 60's....Everly Bros, Chad and Jeremy, Simon and Garfunkel, Righteous Bros, Sonny and Cher...and on. Not many remember the Kalin Twins...When...was a hit in late 50's. Still love that song..upbeat, snappy and just early 60's fun.

😊 I had the honor of being at the Beatles Ed Sullivan Miami Beach show. Sat next to Ed Sullivan's granddaughter, then six years later got to open for John Lennon with my group Arthur, Hurley and Gottlieb. at Bryant Park, NYC. Sitting in the big empty moving van with John and Yoko, before we went on, I told him "I was at the show in Miami Beach!"in John's deadpan humor, he replied "so was I"😂

This was from the Beatles first tour of America. They were fun. This is before Rock & Roll musicians felt they had to have an "attitude". They took over the worlds culture. From that night, for more than 1 yr, the first story on the nightly news was usually a story about the Beatles. Multiply the Swifties by a few billion.

Actually, in this live performance, I can hear that Paul's vocal is coming through a little stronger in the mix than John's as compared to the record audio which they have them fairly even. I've listened to so much Beatles most of my entire adult life that I can confidently pick out their individual voices. By the way Jane Asher was the sister of Peter Asher of Peter and Gordon who had their first hit with "A World Without Love" which was written by McCartney (attributed to Lennon and McCartney). You should react to that one by Peter and Gordon.

It was my parent's anniversary that night but after dinner, we all watched the Ed Sullivan show together. It was this performance that persuaded them to accept Beatles music. The Beatles were all in their very early 20's.

Def react to the Beatles doing Long Tall Sally live, and maybe compare it to the studio version. its a very short song. it was done in one take in the studio, so getting the perspective of hearing him sing it in that controlled environment compared to the electricity of the live version would be interesting. Pauls vocal delivery on that song is POWERFUL every time.

They really turned the corner in their career in 1965 with Rubber Soul. From that point on it was the most amazing evolution in music history. By the time they recorded their final album, none had yet turned 30.

I am 63 years old, so I was like 10 years old when they broke up, but even as a child I remember Beatles songs. I think you struck on the important thing about the Beatles, their music makes you happy. I think that’s why people were devastated when they broke up. We never wanted the music to stop. I think it is hard for us looking from the outside, but I don’t think it was easy being a Beatle. Of course there were all the positives, but most people can’t imagine the negative side. Half of the Fab Four were attacked in their homes. John fatally but George and his wife had to fight for their lives.

This is early in the Beatles popularity, they first formed in 1959 but the most well known version of this band began in late 1962 when Ringo Star was brought on board.This clip is from one of there Ed Sullivan Show performances in 1963 or 1964. Abby Road Studio (where they recorded) was quite advanced for that time, 4 track's of mono recording (with the help of syncro's more than 4) and something like 6-8 channels on the in-put side, I'm not sure if there was any sub-mix buses (I doubt it) but the EQ was very basic. I've seen just a few pictures of those early 1960's console's but most you'll find on a Goggle search are from the late 1960's and wouldn't have been around in 1963. Not long after the Beatles's first few recording session's there was a huge leap in recording studio capabilities/engineering tech (around 1967) and in the early 1970's live stage production took another giant leap in both sound quality and area coverage!

This was their first big hit here in the USA. The first song I heard by them was in Nov of 1963 - "Please Please Me" Then after the first of the year, '64 - this one hit big. Jane Asher was also the sister of Peter Asher of Peter & Gordon. Keep in mind that this is a live recording I believe on the Ed Sullivan Show and I don't believe they had any monitors either.

Should be noted, too, Paul would always refer to the group as John's band, which it was, all the way back to its inception. Unless the stage was too small, John would be positioned slightly ahead of the others.

Hi Beth, what a lovely video! In case no one else did it yet, I'll answer a couple of your questions: How early in their career this is: It's the first TV appearance in the US. February 1964. They only just made it there with this single, and were about to reocrd their third album - A Hard Days Night. The woman - Jane Asher - was just about 18 or 19 at the time... ;-)

I Want To Hold Your Hand was the Beatles first number one song in the USA, Came out in late December 1963. Ed Sullivan quickly jumped on the opportunity to have the Beatles make their America debut on his show. Their appearance garnered over 70 million viewers in February of 1964.
