Nice to see that other musicians have been through what I am trying to do these days! I may have figured out how to control fading time in logic; you need to record the midi message sent by your console through the midi out plugged in logic. Select your track, set up midi correctly (make sure you can see midi info coming in logic, you can also use Midi monitor for this), then press A to activate automations. In your track, set the midi in Latch mode. Create a midi region in advance for the lenght of your fade. For some reason i think you also need to give it a dummy note (pick any that doesn't trigger anything). Then you can record the automations by moving the faders on your console, which will give it a live feel. What is cool is that you can play with multiple faders at the same time. I noticed that moving faders sends midi CC data, and that pushing Bump keys sends midi Notes data. The thing cool with the notes is that you can also program midi patterns like with a step sequencer, but you need to program the note in and note out and the velocity value. I still need to figure out that part. You can then cycle through the automations you have recorded with cmd+Y to take a look at them. To play it back, as you probably already know, you need to put it in Read mode. I used a ETC Smartfade to achieve this, and it is a lot of plugging and unplugging the midi cables because the machine won't take midi in and out at the same time because it is designed to use the midi to clone on another Smartfade unit, so it can only be either Master or Slave at a time. I am still figuring things out at the moment, I really need to speedup the workflow and programming part, as it is very therious for now. I would be happy to see what you can do nowadays. Cheers!

Great video, nicely explained though would have been better to see some of the Logic and desk set up from scratch. If you set your LED bars to 5 channel DMX using the LCD display on the lights then you can program the strobe speed for each light in each scene on desk fader 5 then load scene from Logic. It may not be perfect - but at a fast enough speed it will look awesome!

🦋❤️🦋 You left out the biggest pro. Programming allows you to sync the lights precisely to the beats. … and stop precisely where the music pauses and stops and starts. Nothing worse than lights that are playing/pulsating their own beats that are completely out of sync with the music. Worse yet… lights that are flashing way faster than the Beats per minute. BPM Turn off the Logic Pro slider automation for channel one and two. Otherwise, it overrides your LED light console. Your candor was truly wonderful.

Awesome thanks for sharing! Question though: how are you physically outputting midi to the dmx controller? My audio interface doesn't have 5-pin MIDI Out so I'm considering getting a USB to 5pin MIDI adapter, or trying to use the 5pin MIDI out on my midi keyboard.

Thanks! Really glad this little weird tech ramble could be helpful! :D My physical output is connected via the standard ‘midi out’ port on my audio interface to the ‘dmx in’ port on my light controller. No idea if the USB-to-MIDI solution will work, but you should be able to use the MIDI out on the keyboard. Just check which channel it’s sending/receiving the light controls, so it won’t accidentally trigger the keyboard instead. If you have a thru port on the keyboard, you should be able to use that too. Try just messing around with it and see what happens! I’ve seen some people controlling their lights directly with a keyboard midi controller and it was super fun! In Ethereal Kingdoms, we run the midi signal from the laptop into the Behringer XR18 mixer, out through the MIDI out, through the guitarist’s pedal board and then via a MIDI thru port into the DMX controller and it works like a charm - (as long as they are not on the same channel as the guitar patch changes haha, that makes for some funky results!) Let me know what you find out! :D

Thanks Sofia! I got it working as far as using the keyboard to trigger light scenes... but my recorded midi notes in logic aren't triggering the dmx. My midi keyboard is plugged in with USB power and I'm guessing it wants 5pin midi Input to send out so I've got a converter being sent, hopefully will do the trick!

@@SofiaSchmidt Thanks Sofia! My controller didn't work so I ended up getting a converter from USB C to 5 pin and finally got it working (for some reason I had to go deep into Control Surface Setup to find a solution). Now I want to figure out fade control. What I'm trying to do is set the DMX controller as a MIDI-IN to a VST instrument - and then record the Fader action and see where that data "lands" so I can figure out how to get it to send data out! Have you ever tried this??

I think it depends on your DMX controller. On the ETC Smartfade it has a midi out. You can also buy a midi to DMX box.

which led bars did you get if you don’t mind me asking ?

I got the cheap ones from the Stairville brand! The “Stairville Led Bar 120/4” 50cm version. It’s been with me on almost every type of production imaginable since 2020 and holds up to whatever you put them through. It’s got both 2, 4 and 12-channel mode, which have different properties, so check out what effects and stuff you would like to have in your fixtures and find a bar/rail/lamp that goes with what you need :)

did you figure out the fade issue?
@SofiaSchmidt
@SofiaSchmidt Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately no! I haven’t found a reliable way to automate it with logic. Might be an issue with my specific model of controller or a setting somewhere that I have overlooked. I haven’t spent much time looking for it since this video though, have mostly been doing lights manually.
