Some good ideas here and really helpful, thank you! You did an excellent job at distilling down some important basics into a short video and I will use what I learned immediately! I would like to suggest though, that it would be even better if you A/B'd at equal loudness. It was hard to tell at the end how improved the sound was as it was much louder after compressing, and a fair test would have made it much better. I think equal loudness A/B'ing is really important. Thanks :)

One last additive, you can also try recording the vocal 3 times and panning one right, one left, and a mono but that’s just me. Give it a try

I understand if you're tracking to get the perfect vocal going in sometimes time doesn't permit that and sometimes the vocals are already printed and you have to process it so using the tools available are necessary. The point is sorry job to make the music sound good however it comes to us if we're able to change the way the music is actually being recorded then so be it. Unfortunately auto tune has became used so much as a reflection of the talent out here but we have no control over that. Sometimes we just use it for an effect. Once they see the before and after they will understand why they are paying the money that they are paying to perfect it.

what if the level of the vocals boost too much before the actual limiter even working when you boost the gain? I had to pull up the gain up to about 9-10db to see that limiter's working a lil bit but then it was way too loud already. thanks
@Hyperbits
@Hyperbits 2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes going into the vocal stem and manually dipping the volume before the vocal hits the limiter is advised here. It's this type of attention to detail that really makes all the different between a good imx and a damn incredible one.

I completely disagree with autotune. It should usually only be used to fix things in place of re-recording the samples. Only the overly produced modern genres like pop force this because of the nature of the productions themselves.
@Hyperbits
@Hyperbits 3 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. But autotune is a widely accessible tool to producers, and have become common place in modern music production. Not using all of these resources and tools available to you runs the risk of making your productions not subjectively measure up against other tracks being released. But this is all stylistic preferences, and wanting subtle imperfection in vocal takes is a desirable end result for many artist, producers, and even entire genres.

Can someone explain what these 3 different compressors are doing? I understand you're catching peaks with maybe different attack and release settings but why 3?
@honestmusica
@honestmusica 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Clark. Usually it's best to let multiple compressors do a little bit of work each, rather than having one carry the burden. 3 subtle compressors will give a more natural feel as opposed to 1 aggressive compressor. There is no magic number per say. It is somewhat arbitrary that he uses 3. Although 3 is usually found to be a "sweet-spot" for reasons mentioned above. I imagine it's because those 3 compressors in series provides the desired sound for this track.
@clarkcoffman
@clarkcoffman 3 жыл бұрын
@@honestmusica Okay that makes sense. I can see putting the workload on one compressor will end up pushing it too hard. Thanks!

The Isness would it be 3 back to back ? Would each have -3 db or -1 and all three would equal -3 ?
@Hyperbits
@Hyperbits 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Clark, Everyone's responses are spot on. Having one compressor do all the work forces it to work too hard, which can often times morph the sound in undesirable ways. Do not forget also that every compressor handles sound differently and different compressors can often bring different coloration to the signal. Stacking a subtle generic compressor with something like a Devil-Loc Delux can give great tonality to your tracks.
@clarkcoffman
@clarkcoffman 3 жыл бұрын
@@Hyperbits That's a great point. I never thought about using compressors in series with 'coloration' in mind. That opens up all new doors. Thanks for doing this series. One of my favorite resources. I send it to all my producer buddies. Cheers

Ideal gain level for a final processed vocal ?
@Hyperbits
@Hyperbits 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, there is never a right answer to how loud a final vocal should be in the track. I would recommend comparing the track you're working on to a commercially-released track in a similar genre - try to match the gain of your vocal to theirs! It will get you close.

Sounds like the vocalist had a flu on that day ("waitin" and "home"). That's something you just can't process out.

I think it sounds like that because there is a sidechain trigger on the vocal which he didn't leave out. Therefore some words are being cut a little

Step #1 garbage. How about telling people they need to learn how to sing?
@Hyperbits
@Hyperbits 2 жыл бұрын
Because we're a production platform! Plus, if the tools are available to make your music better, why not use them? Sure uncorrected vocals have their time, place, and style, but the simple fact is that the standards of modern music expect the use of autotune. Not having it often sounds off if you're going for a modern sound. But again, it's all creative choice. If you want to learn how to sing, why not search for videos on that topic instead of production tricks for pitch correction?
@Itjustgotserious
@Itjustgotserious Жыл бұрын
@@Hyperbits I know this video is old, but with all due respect that last statement was asinine. Pitch correction is a component of vocal processing, it is not the end all be all. People didn’t necessarily click this video to learn about autotune in particular.
