It's funny. I took the song to be about the words that should have been spoken, but never were. But Simon says he doesn't really know what the song was about anymore, and the darkness he greets as a friend was literally the darkness in the bathroom he used to write in. It's more about what the song stirs in yourself, I think.

@ We all will find the meaning to any songs that relates to us, or manages to touch an emotion or memories, that gravitates us to a particular songs. I see what you saying about being a songwriter. I love the song when S& G did it,, yet Distortions instrumentals and Davids voice takes it to a totally different level, its so powerful. it has a few different meanings to me. Equal as a scent, of a perfume, a room, library, smell of particular food cooking can take one back to a child 50 years scents can be as powerful as a song can be.

i've heard people say they don't like this cover because of his growling, but that's who Disturbed are. they built their career with grit and growl, and it's truly beautiful here. like you said it's so appropriate for the subject matter, as it always is with their original songs. metal vocalists, and draiman in particular, are not always given the respect they deserve. he has a beautiful voice however he uses it
@dudeling2000

I think it's actually what makes the song relevant again in this time. Sung like S&G did originally wouldn't carry the modern sentiment. The song is ultimately a political one, expressing as Valerie put it, frustration over those who lead, and the cults of personality which drive political discourse. Back in the 60's, it really was merely frustration. But in our time it's gone beyond that. It's anger. And the rising level of distortion he puts into his voice as he goes very clearly expresses that anger that in modern terms S&G's style simply would create the same resonance with.

He had extensive training in his youth in preparation for becoming a Jewish cantor. There was another video where someone was saying that he didn't have "classical" training and I had to laugh because "classical" training came about through the liturgical tradition. Doesn't get more classical, or classic than that. He doesn't use any vocal correction, contrary to the popular Autotune opinion. He is such a stickler about this that, when he helped produce one of Trivium's albums, he wouldn't let them use correction either. He basically told them that the fans should get the same experience vocally whether from an album or a live show. So all the distortion we hear in any of his vocals is something he does himself. Absolute powerhouse, too.

I'm a huge Disturbed fan for years and I love David. He can really sing. But this was pitch corrected. I've even heard that autotune was used against David's will. @@VocalSplendorStudios With all due respect, autotune was definitely used. I am a mixing engineer and have a lot of experience with various pitch correction and editing tools and if you can't hear it, I don't know what to tell you. It doesn't sound like it was post-production but rather it was used live. If he was angry about them using it, I don't blame him one bit. In my opinion David Draiman is hands down one of the best if not the best vocalist of today,nobody can vocal fry day in and day out without damaging his throat and vocals like David does.Other than being a cantor as a child he was also schooled in classical music/singing,I have seen them live a few times and he can sing like that all night long.
@lowelljohnston7013
@lowelljohnston7013 5 жыл бұрын
I saw and interview here on KZfaq, with Loudwire doing a Wikipedia fact or fiction video (it's actually broken into 2 parts). In it, David states that part of his ability with the vocal fry comes from issues with acid from his stomach. He actually had surgery on his esophagus to repair the damage from acid. He cannot have another surgery as there is no tissue left to assist in the repair. He now controls his issues with the gerd, by diet. That said, there's probably not going to be another artist anytime soon that can compare in his ability to absolutely kill a vocal fry. If you watch closely when he does fry, you can tell it's not from the cords. He scrunches up his nose, forcing the fry to come from his mouth throat; but above the cords. This man is truly gifted beyond reproach. I wholeheartedly agree with you Timothy, David is indeed one of the best vocalists of our age. I am in awe every single time I go to one of his concerts.

This is one of my favorite songs growing up. And also singing, the sound of silence, in choir. To hear Disturbed sing this. I just love the song even more. Thank you for sharing. You asked too recommend a song to listen to. There's only one that came to mind. It is off the album, Yoni, the songs name. Love is all. Very beautifully the way this young lady sang. I am looking forward in hearing more from you. Thank you. George.....

Finally someone that understands that this version expresses the anger and sadness of the world that did not heed the warning when S&G first warned us gently like children before we go make those careless choices. This is a warning for adults that heard and still are going down the wrong path. Only my interpretation of this song and the different versions. Great reaction. Gained a new subscriber

DD was trained as a Cantor. It sounds like he is very specific how he sings the song because he is. He spent 3 straight hours in the vocal booth perfecting the sound and cried when he was done. He was furious with Conan's production term for using autotune on this. Paul Simon publicly congratulated him on the performance.

I saw this song -exactly- as you did!! I am so thrilled to "share" my feelings about music with someone else.. I have friends that appreciate it but don't see INSIDE the songs!! Thank you so much! I would like to mention one more thing.. the crispness of the piano playing was a lovely offset to the timpani- they just swirled around each other so beautifully! And I agree that His voice made a "lovely" song into a heartfelt song! I literally have goosebumps when he hits that grit and Bass key.." with that neon God He made.." Oh, My...! Anyhow, I appreciate and completely agree with your opinion 🙂.
