VOCES8 is joined by members of the VOCES8 Foundation Choir & Orchestra, conducted by Artistic Director Barnaby Smith for a performance of Eric Whitacre's 'Sleep', in a new orchestration by Jim Clements.
The track is available on the VOCES8 Foundation's new album 'To Sing of Love', which is released on 7th June 2024.
'Sleep' is the first single and is available here: orcd.co/v8choirsleep
TEXT
The evening hangs beneath the moon,
A silver thread on darkened dune.
With closing eyes and resting head
I know that sleep is coming soon.
Upon my pillow, safe in bed,
A thousand pictures fill my head.
I cannot sleep, my mind’s a-flight;
And yet my limbs seem made of lead.
If there are noises in the night,
A frightening shadow, flickering light,
Then I surrender unto sleep,
Where clouds of dream give second sight,
What dreams may come, both dark and deep,
Of flying wings and soaring leap
As I surrender unto sleep,
As I surrender unto sleep.
Charles Anthony Silvestri, b.1965

I have loved the Voces8 performance of this piece since it came out. This version with more voices and the orchestra adds a new dimension.

Whitacre had it very, very easy. He was originally going to use the Robert Frost "Stopping By Woods On a Snowy Evening", and didn't hear until much later (recordings of the original setting exist) that the Frost estate didn't allow settings of it back then. This was 2001 or so. One of Whitacre's best friends just happens to be a renowned poet, Charles Anthony Silvestri. He is in demand in the choral world for his prose and a fine musician in his own right. He was asked by Whitacre to write something that conveyed the feel of the original Frost and Sleep was born.

@@carloscamejo7532 It's strange, but without knowing this background story I did think of the Frost poem. It has that same mystical feel about it.

Sleep by Eric Whitacre is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE PIECE. To VOCES8 and everyone involved in this work: you have done such an amazing job in bringing this calibre of music into the world with such immaculate audio recording and cinematography. We are all indebted to you for this truly moving and God-glorifying production of such a passionate piece of music with so many talented artists from so many different backgrounds. This coalition of powerful performers can truly make music that penetrates the soul and tunes with every sense of the body. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU AND A THOUSAND TIMES MORE, THANK YOU. p.s.To Barnaby Smith: you are my role model. I am a 16-year-old choral conducting enthusiast and I hope to start my first year of college early (2024-2025). I hope and pray that I can train to conduct choral music, even at a small level, and make music for God's glory. You are an inspiration.

It is hard to improve on a song that was conceived to be A cappella and then orchestrate it and not be redundant but this setting adds another level of depth to this exquisite music. The tubular bells on the pedal that moves through the voices gave me goosebumps. The performance is what we come to expect from Voces8 and sends us to another world, if only for a moment.

Always love the /f/ /f/ sound at "flickering light" as it really paints the image and makes the sound of candles flickering. Sleep is necessary but can be cumbersome and vulnerable. Such poetry about a normal human experience.

Same here, gorgeous though this is. (Bombastic?) I'm gonna be even more of a heretic and say the piece gets more depth with the Frost words; I think it's more moving. But nice to be able to nitpick when we have these amazing performances to enjoy.

I hate to be the odd man out, but I thought this was way over done The orchestra and choir were each too large, the setting too dramatic. The performance just seemed to overwhelm the piece. I suppose I much rather prefer their original setting. Each to their own...
