As a longtime Floyd fan, I'm right there with you. The original will always be stirring, bittersweet, and beautiful, but what sets the Nightwish cover apart is how much those guys clearly *love* that song. It wasn't like a cover they did to get on a soundtrack or compilation, they played it because they wanted to, and it really shines through in the performance!

hola...lovely lady..can't express to you how glad i am to see you paying homage to the great Tarja..she gets comparatively little attention from reactors...many new NW fans have such little understanding and appreciation of the tremendous contribution she had made to the initial success of this band, and the fame she provided to them for 9 years, as well as the massive legion of obsessive fans she garnered, who to this day firmly, incorrigibly and passionately hold her as utterly irreplaceable and not subject to duplication by anyone...
@jeronymusv4558
@jeronymusv4558 4 жыл бұрын
For me you are the first Tarja enthousiast with a well argumented as well as passionate expressed point of view I read for a very long time. Not that I am contentwise fully backing you, I am one of out of the legions of people that did not like her singing at all at the time. And as a consequence did not came around to appreciate pearls as this one. Because of me loving the live performances of the band during the last couple of years I listenend again to the first few albums with Tarja and found to my surprise that there are far more recordings with Tarja that I like. I even collected a few albums during her time with Nightwish. Live I find her on many occasions fawlty however, I can not get over that. But that being said I would never express myself towards the "obsessive" fans as they are being wrong. You sir, come across as one of thoseTarja enthousisast who has a passionate liking for her without feeling obligated publically dissing the current singer. For that, I applaud you for your reaction. I am probably not as nuanced and graceful in my reaction as I would/could be if I wrote this to you in my native tongue (Dutch). I hope nevertheless that you find this reaction as being respectful towards you.
@faiffull3532
@faiffull3532 4 жыл бұрын
@@jeronymusv4558 much obliged for your kind and respectful response...i take it that by "faulty" you are referring to the thinning in her voice when having to pull out a high, extended vibrato on some faster songs...that claim does have merit, but it was difficult, at that time in her vocal development to pull it off flawlessly in a high register soprano timbre...she has become far more adept at this in the intervening years...to be sure, the studio recordings are rather tame compared to her rich, deep, resonant, flowing and so soul- caressing delivery in the live performances...to see her at her most mesmerizing take a look at the ballads she delivered in the 'from wishes to eternity concert" such as swanheart , dead boys poem and walking in the air....or her exquisite floating of kuolema tekee taiteilijan...leaving fans of all ages, genders and backgrounds in a flood of tears...it is utterly amazing .. i am generally, much more in favor of the heavier sounding delivery and adore bands like Symphony X, Rhapsody of Fire, Galneryus and Dragonforce but Tarja's voice and angelic delivery, to me are heavenly.....moreover, i have closely followed Floor from her very early days as the lead in After Forever to REvamp being very much impressed with her classical/vocal approach and incomparable stage presence utterly befitting her chosen genre...upon joining NW however she came to adopt a more contemporary singing style and i am somewhat disappointed, but thats my problem and i'll deal with it...at any rate, feel free to communicate with me in Dutch, if you so desire...absolute best wishes to you, greeting from US

at this stage in her development as a vocalist, she generally used a higher register, but being the pro that she is, she used a mixed vocal delivery for this song...her very early voice was much lower and deeper (although just as impressive ) in the astounding "wishes to eternity" concert from the 2000 wishmaster tour...today she employs a variety of vocal models, constantly innovating her vocal paradigm...couldn't get through her signature ballad without running out of tears...and i mean that literally....love you Tarja !!!

Great reaction! It's really interesting to consider how different Tarja approaches this song than Floor does. Tarja does basically the whole song in her operatic head voice, digging in everywhere with minimal dynamics, and keeps an even volume while climbing notes in the climax. Floor instead does most of the song in a quasi-operatic mixed voice that has more chest resonance in it, she occasionally flicks into other styles for decoration, she uses dynamics throughout the song, and climbs in both volume and note in the climax (sacrificing some resonance for that power, especially in the last 2 notes). Both approaches are fantastic and reflect the particular strenghts and tastes of the two singers.

@@xeleelex146 She sings a lot of this in classical style. In the end she goes full operatic. You're right, switching between classical and contemporary vocals defines this period of her: that's the style she sang since Century Child album, and does in this song too. Her classical approach is however less operatic than in early Nightwish.

Seconded. This is a good performance of Phantom of the Opera, but to me the 2000 concert is better too. Because I like the more operatic vocals she sang the early half of her Nightwhish career. And then I like her most recent performances, because she is now better singer than she was in Nightwish. I'm glad that you saw this video. The very OG Nightwish. back in the day, all the metal fan girls idolatrized Tarja like crazy (you can see it in that video how they are crying to see her sing), that happened everywhere, and all the boys we had that mad crush on her xD. Obviously. She's still very beautiful nowadays but back then in the late 90's she was like the bomb, the frontwoman of all the front women. The blending voices in that era were something unique, too bad what happened between Tarja and the rest of the members, but that's life.

@Aurinkohirvi 4 жыл бұрын
Marko supported firing Tarja though. Tarja and Anette both got exhausted in Nightwish world tours with 5 to 6 gigs in a week, they both spoke about it, and Tarja was suggesting cutting off smaller gigs and cutting off whole continents from the tours. This is what Marko wrote in his book: "Everyone were pissed limitlessly. The cancellation of American tour meant big hole in the touring earnings, and this happened right when the best album of the band was rising there. This meant losing the biggest market in the world." That was probably "Once" album, which means they did go to North America, though. In the open letter they blame Tarja's attitude when she said in the future tour she would sing max two weeks at a time, and they blame her diva because she moved from the band bus to hotel accommodation - which Tarja told she had to do, because she didn't get enough rest in the band bus and both her voice and health were suffering. I think the band saw Tarja stepping on the brake pedal while they were stepping on gas pedal, saw problems for the next world tour, and pre-emptively acted - in a very, very bad fashion. And the bad fashion in the break up might be because of Tarja - Tuomas - Marcelo triangle drama, of which no-one else spoke openly but Marcelo.

Operation: Corrupt Christi - has completed successfully. You've finally gotten to see the original muse of Nightwish. And she's a powerhouse as well. She did set the bar really high on what we needed to hear. And even with Nightwish 3.0, we are extremely lucky that Floor has the power to be able to sing the old school songs. But you've now been exposed to Floor, Tarja, and Simmone . 3 of the queens of symphonic metal. We did say that the dark side has cookies, we don't mess around on this :)

But then, it's not "power" that is needed to sing the old songs. You can sing them contemporary style, Anette did that as well, and Floor does it in most cases. If one wants to do them like Tarja did, then one needs a good classical technique. Another style, not power.
@chrisvonsande7173
@chrisvonsande7173 4 жыл бұрын
Annete unfortunately did NOT do the old school songs well. She was fine in the professional recordings with the music tailored to her, but the live clips you see floating online? Tarjas songs were too much for her. Yes, she had more of a pop style, and more belter technique. But most of the clips you see online, Nightwish's product, or live music was suffering. And there were old songs that couldn't be on the set list anymore because, the singer wasn't able to sing them. Floor came into the fold and was like a lightning bolt. The old stuff is working its way back to life ( yes sometimes modified in a lower key to work with her voice better) I recall watching the 2013 Wacken concert the first time, and by about 2-3 songs in, I was floored. ( Pun possibly intended.) Powerhouse, "Force of Nature" call it what you want. The ones that can deliver live just as well (if not better) as in the recording studio. They deserve to be acknowledged as such.

This performance, this interpretation, this atmosphere Nightwish made us gift of, here, is utter magic. I want to be clear saying what I'm gonna say. I love Floor Jansen, I truly do... she's tremendously powerful, utterly versatile, all-rounded singer-performer-artist who perfectly merged into Nightwish like a perfectly matching natural element and I honestly believe it would be very very very hard and even difficult to see her and the rest of the band parting ways like happened with Tarja. Now... I know many of you experienced this kinda poliamorous sentiment with someone - yeah.... you're hearing me - and in this case with two of the best female singers who has ever put their own feet into this earth. We witnessed here, in this amazing and damn gripping _"Phantom of the Opera"_ a real moment of bliss, we witnessed the majestic magic Marco and Tarja created and shared with that fully absorbed and absorbing audience. We all witnessed such a multi connection between Marco and Tarja, between them and the rest of the band and, most importantly.... with every single person in that impressive crowd melting in love with what was going there. They were captured, shaken deep within, absorbed into an unique osmosis process only Music can create. All this to come to the real point here: we all can understand now what an earthquake has occurred within this very specially gifted talented band of musicians, artists and human beings, when Tarja and the band went into parted ways. We can ultimately understand why there's been all that heat between Tarja and Marco. Something very special magic and unique was broken there at that point. At the end of the day I know.... too hard would be having two queens for a king... but if the arrival of Floor has been a blessing for Marco, the band and, let's not forget, us all... and we would never ever feel the same if she was gone... we cannot ignore the fact that Tarja parting from the band has been a tragedy, a tragedy for Marco again, for the entire band again... and once again for any single one of us in love with this gift of a project we all call Nightwish. Here why I have to say this.... a huge scary "what if". What if Tarja would join the band again, with Floor staying together? Would Marco be able to handle that and find the necessary inspiration to move forwards from that point and push the whole Nightwish musical project and experience to a brand new higher level? *I - think - so!* We didn't see it all, with Nightwish... and this is my wide open eyed wish. I'm a Therion fan as well, I consider Chistofer Johnsson an absolute genius and the greatest classical composer alive today and I just can't wait for his next masterpiece coming hopefully very very very soon. Nonetheless I love Nighwish and I really wish they accomplish more.... taking Therion as an example is not too much, is not blasphemy at all. I love Music, alright? I really do... and that's why I say this, I do it in the name of this passion of mine and of ours, I say it for the future of Music's sake. *Let's make that happen!*. I dream about that since ages, I've been wishing that since I fell in love with these two so different and yet so similar projects. We should see this happening, as a gift to humanity, to mankind. Now, whoever has been reading this and got to this point... feel free to take me for a visionary or a fool. I'm probably both and ain't always a great thing, in my opinion... would be more a curse than a gift... but you know, you know it.... you know all that makes sense, you know that should really happen. if you don't... then there's something terribly tragically frighteningly wrong with this world of ours! Enough said. Please... Be safe, Stay home, Live creatively. ~ Peace-out!

Yeah I just replied another comment by you of the same thing. You are right, switching between classical vocal style and contemporary is what defines Tarja's metal career ever since Century Child album. Range is nice to have, but it's not what makes one a good singer.
