One of the things i love about Luke's performances is that he's not trying to make it his. He doesn't even change the gender or pronoun - I'll work in the market as a checkout girl. Others might be "checkout boy" or "You'll work in the market". He's honoring and respecting Tracy every step of the way. He knows it's her song and he's not trying to change that. It's fantastic.

I think I understand what you mean. Some songs, when you cover it, you want to change it up a little, make it a bit fresh, otherwise what's the point? Like when Adam Lambert slowed down Cher's "Believe" to a ballad at the Kennedy Center Honors. And sometimes with songs like "Fast Car", you just do the song to honor such perfection.

I'm old enough to remember when this song first came out, and I had long considered Tracy's vocal performance to be a masterful bit of underplaying against the powerfully emotional story and lyrics. But now hearing Jaron explain in such detail about how the chill pronunciations and relaxed vocal movement connect to and enhance the meaning of the song was revelatory! I see now that Tracy chose to sing this song in a reserved, restrained manner to reflect the similar limitations placed on the life of this song's protagonist. I never would have thought on my own that the shapes your mouth make when singing can have symbolic meanings. Thank you for giving me a new level of insight and appreciation for this song!

Very well stated. Lyrically, the song is about someone agonizing about their situation and the fantasy of escape. So the "understated" vocal from Tracey just amplifies the story.

How have I never seen any of your content before??? You are fabulous! I'm gen X and was already an adult when this song was first released. For those of us who had lower female voices (I'm a low-middle voice) hearing a "pop contralto" on the radio was EVERYTHING. Tracy cemented my love of contemporary, folky, indie music. All the color in her voice and the way she broke the rules of singing made room for other storytellers that sing in a lower register. Sure, we can talk about Joni Mitchell, Karen Carpenter, and even Sarah Vaughn with their magical voices. But Tracy was all the way gen X. And we love her for it.

I was blessed enough to see Ms. Tracy Chapman on her first international tour. Her album hit so huge she found herself performing on the same stage with the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Peter Gabriel. It was a tour to raise awareness and funds for Amnesty International. They had her booked to play for the audience as part of the afternoon line-up. Just her and her guitar. In front of _thousands_ of people in The Big O in Montreal, Canada. She was amazing. There are no words. I still hold the memory of first hearing the Fast Car released on the radio - it gave me chills that I can still feel. Thank you SO much for sharing this performance. Ms. Chapman... she is a Master. Hearing Luke Combs harmonize to her... _Fun fact_ - Ms. Chapman's guitar was made by a woman who lives in Calgary (Alberta), Canada. There's an interview with her on the local CBC radio show. It's worth a listen... - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

I have a funny story about this song. Back in the 90's, I was on the Staten Island Ferry going past the Statue of Liberty, and there was a woman singing this song on the deck, playing the guitar. She sang it beautifully. Well, while she was singing a huge gust of wind came up and blew the money out of her guitar case that people were dropping in for her. I jumped out of the crowd watching, ran around the deck and collected up all the money and put it back in her guitar case, with another couple bucks I had. She looked me in the eye and said thanks, and continued singing this song. I'll never forget that. This song is so beautiful. I love that Tracy and Luke sang it together like this.

I love country music but unfortunately, I had no idea who Luke Combs was. His respect towards Tracy Chapman is a shining example and the BLUEPRINT of how younger artists should behave towards established artists. Watching how sweet his is towards her, and seeing how much he respects her talent and still sees her humanity is so touching that it makes me want to tear up. I want to learn more about Luke and support his music because of who he showed himself to be here.

Her voice is still as rich, captivating and haunting as it was 30+ years ago. Great singers don't need a bunch of tricks to make great songs.

I was so against a cover of this song because of how perfect the original is, but Luke Combs’ so obviously reveres and respects Tracy that it feels right. His emotion during this performance is really something.

Part of me felt the same way, but Tracy Chapman is a songwriter. Even if a cover will never transcend the original, I'm sure she appreciates that her work will live on and survive later interpretations.

@@kathyvanburen3313 Oh absolutely! I definitely have a strong attachment to the original, so I was biased going in. But I really love what Luke Combs did with the song and I love the way it’s created a whole new audience for Tracy’s incredible work!!

Fast Car must really mean alot to Luke for having covered it for many years. His dad playing it in the car must have been the reason for it....and it just stuck.

This channel is about the delivery… Respect… But decades after her original release of Fast Car, in this 4th turning, with political realignment, wealth inequality, populism, geopolitical decoupling, and deaths of despair…. The lyrics are prophetic…

I love how Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs both seem so excited for this moment. Five years ago, people probably would have said no way to the idea that “Fast Car” would be a Country hit, but I think that Luke Combs proved that that would have been the stereotype talking. “Fast Car” is a beautiful folk/soul song, so it shouldn’t be surprising that a genre so heavily influenced by folk and soul music would pick the song up and run with it.

It’s phenomenal how Country legend Tracy Chapman’s one of kind authentic beautiful voice and vocals are STILL flawless, pristine, and crispy after ALL these decades. As a GenX, this brought tears because Tracy was one of beloved songbirds that gave us all wonderful music memories back in the day. ❤

I cannot listen to Tracy Chapman sing without wanting to cry. I just remember my mom had cassette tapes of her music and we would play them on full blast volume and sing along while we were cleaning house or cooking. She was literally a part of the soundtrack of my childhood. This song and "Give Me One Reason" was my 2 favorites of hers. She really is a treasure.

I was very hesitant when Luke covered Fast Car, since no one can do it like Tracy. But he took it on and handled it with such respect. I love how even though he is a great musician in his own right, he still let her lead in the duet ❤

I was a college sophomore when this song came out. I'll never forget the first time I heard this song. It came on the radio and me and my coworkers just stopped and listened in awe - partly because it was so different than anything else on the radio at the time. Our country was very different back then. There wasn't as much division, anger and strife.
