In my humble opinion your reactions on VP are becoming better and better! THANK YOU for playing it twice and giving us such interesting examples of how beatboxing can be done! How Geoff can do this? Talent obviously and more than 20 years of practising ... I love the sound when he increases the air on that last deep note. Maybe he can breathe in through the ears!? 🎉😂❤

They just keep tackling these HUGE iconic songs and killing them. Ed Boyer mixes it for them and he's a freaking genius. Layne, the beatboxer, was the original baritone for the group and Scott Porter, yes the actor, was the beatboxer. Layne actually has the largest range in the group. He hit an A0 (one lower than Geoff) as an inhale note at the end of SH-Boom, and an G#6 as a sound effect in ACA Top 10 Disney Villains. All the others have a 5+ octave range. Geoff and those subs still get me though.

I really like the format of you reacting and then analyzing. You always have so much to add that’s different than other people especially because of your beatboxing. I can always tell when Layne is going to do something because of his hand movements (I especially like that little flutter hand movement ). You do the same thing. It’s like you need that extra little bit of energy to get those sounds out.😂
@sudelaine8653
@sudelaine8653 10 ай бұрын
They all have characteristic hand/body movement. Geoff is a big hand guy. Dropping one hand, palm up, is the way he pulls those super-low notes out of his chest. Sometimes I think he couldn't sing at all if you tied his hands behind his back. Eli does the grab-the-air motion at chest level for belting out notes; both hands for really high notes. Cesar shoves both fists down and back to get max volume, then leans forward to really belt. (Also love those little sidelong glances at the camera.) J clasps his fist in front of him and pulls it down while he turns his head for the big notes. For the really big notes it's both fists, pulled apart.

That trumpet (?) sound at the beginning is Cesar, the one between Layne and J. The final mix is done by Ed Boyer, who does the final mix for Home Free and Pentatonix as well. Geoff said in a live chat that Ed mixes them differently than the others. Just rewatched your reaction, still love it!

I loved your use of beatboxing to explain certain parts of the arrangement. It's such an amazing skill and to hear it demo'd live was cool. Great analysis overall. It is always special when we get to hear Layne sing. He usually does it on their slower, more heartfelt arrangements where a heavy beat would seem out of place, but not always, especially not lately. In an old series on their channel called PartWorks, their subscribers got to choose what song they sang and who out of the group sang it. So, the video is Everywhere You Look, the theme song to Full House (90s sitcom in the US, if you're unsure) and they chose Earl (left the group in 2020) and Layne to perform it. They tripled Earl in the video for the main parts and doubled Layne. He was doing the beatboxing and singing bass. It's an oldie but a lot of fun in my opinion, and you get to see the guys maybe doing some things they wouldn't normally do. Like there's one of just Eli and Geoff singing Love Yourself in which Eli is tripled singing all the main parts and Geoff is doubled singing bass and doing the beatboxing. These are, of course, more simple arrangements. They were still touring at the time. They also provided the sheet music for them so their subscribers could also perform them if they wanted. Okay...I'm done rambling. 😁

Whether it's Geoff or Layne, whoever does the arrangement also does the editing of sound and film, including any mastering. They are masters of their craft. Layne is constantly coming up with new sounds to create. He's incredible. He's gone for an 80s feel on this with the gated drums - as in the original - and the VHS appearance. Yes they can all sing and I know Geoff can also do some beatboxing - in fact he taught Layne originally. And his vocal control is beautiful. Great beatboxing by the way!

The 1972 Pontiac was loaned by Layne's dad who bought it new. I love when Geoff is singing at the end and Layne goes to a heart beat. Great effect. I've always enjoyed Phil Collins version (I'm old enough that I knew it before it was the iconic classic it became) and love the Farewell Tour concert in Paris. VoicePlay took that song, put their stamp on it and created one that I love even more. I've thought that in the 2 yrs I've listened to and enjoyed VoicePlay that they were the best in the business, but in the last few months, they have stepped it up and after each presentation you wonder how they could possibly top that one, and yet, time after time, they do. This goes for Geoff's solos as well. They take my breath away. Your reaction/analysis was so good. Loved it.

In this lineup, all of them can sing tenor, baritone, bass, and beatbox, to varying degrees. Gives them a lot of flexibility in their arrangements. J.None was a full-time member from 2018 until he was recruited to sing in the US Navy in spring 2021. He still films and records with them when he's home on leave or a quick weekend visit, like he did here. Thanks for the explanation and demonstration of some of the cool sounds and effects. If it's an inhaled bass or beatbox sound, even really low, it's Layne. Geoff says he doesn't do the inhale notes (ingressive phonation?) because it hurts and he sounds like an injured frog. People surprised that Layne can sing well forget or don't know that he was the original baritone for the group, in all its iterations (they've been performing together since high school) until Scott Porter left to pursue acting, and Layne really developed his beatboxing skills.

I learned so much from your voice play reactions. When you show how the beatboxing Is done it feels like a magician explaining how the trick is done. Pulling the curtain back so to speak. Like several a cappella groups, VoicePlay uses Ed Boyer to do their final audio mix. Ed is known for his mixes for a cappella singers and groups. Geoff also uses Ed, and Pentatonix has used him in the past (not sure if they still use him or not). I think Home Free has used him as well, but not certain about that. Layne (the beatboxer) was the baritone for VoicePlay in the first part of the group's life. After their original beatboxer left, Geoff actually became the beatboxer for a short while and started Layne out, but now Layne has taken it to entirely new levels.

Layne makes these sounds at times which sounds much like what wind musicians do called double and triple tonguing. It is a technique used to produce notes in proper timing. My husband is a retired band teacher and he and my children all can do this. Now I do not know if Layne actually does this in his beat boxing, but it sure sounds like it.
