Geoff Castellucci also has a solo channel, and it would be well worth your time to check it out. Not only does he showcase his 5 octave range throughout the songs he performs (multitracked- every voice you hear will be his), he also has bass singing tutorials, narrative readings and other fun videos. He's such a ridiculous talent, but let me tell you- the more you watch and listen to VoicePlay, you'll start to realize that every one of those guys are just as much a vocal monster as Geoff, only in different ways. Both J. and Eli have stepped in to sing basslines when Geoff solos during live performances, and Eli is also a master of character voices (both sung and spoken). J can also reach absurd heights when he pushes himself. Cesar can also go astonishingly high for a bari-tenor, and he also can sing in overtones. Layne, however, is the real sleeper talent in the group. Vocal percussionists tend to be like sound engineers- they often only stand out if something goes wrong. But Layne's talents only begin with vocal percussion; he used to be the group's baritone, and he also provides about 50% of the vocal arrangements. According to Geoff, Layne is who made him a better arranger by being so picky and honest in his critiques. Layne is also the guy who tends to really push the other fellows to the fringe edges of their abilities. Geoff has frequently said that when a song has him sounding absolutely unreal, it's a Layne arrangement- like this one, with the 15 second sustained B0! So while Geoff may be the VoicePlay gateway drug, I promise, the other guys will hook you just as hard. These guys are all at the top of their game, and IMO, they are a more innovative and creative group than the other two big a cappella groups on the scene currently despite being lesser known.

Geoff's ability to fall in and out of subharmonics is insane. I can hit every note Geoff does on this (including the B0), but, for example, when he does the "Shield and Spears" line in the beginning, dropping to an F#1, I can rarely do the octave drop in the way he does... even though F#1 is still in my chest range. It requires precise larynx placement and Geoff has it down to a science. With Geoff, it is more about his agility than his range, in my opinion. Lots of bass singers can hit every note Geoff does... they just can't do it like Geoff.
@trufflesnuffle3108
@trufflesnuffle3108 4 ай бұрын
I'd say yeah, there are bass singers that can but not just any regular bass singer will be hitting what Geoff does. The chest notes are very low even for a bass and he is consistently doing them. I'd like to see what Geoff could do with fry notes if he practiced them a lot.
@johndeeregreen4592
@johndeeregreen4592 3 ай бұрын
@@trufflesnuffle3108, in my opinion, I don't even think Geoff has anywhere near explored his lower range to the fullest. My lowest chest note is only one semitone deeper than Geoff, and I can do chest-fry down to a B0 and fry (not pure pulse register) down to G -1. I believe Geoff is capable of much more than what we've heard.

This is the creme de la creme of Voiceplay, in my opinion! I listen to it every other night for several hours on repeat. It's so good. The original artist, "Miracle of Sound" gave this "ten out of ten ale horns!" Also, is this your first taste of "Rock God Eli?" Strap on your seat belt, he's just getting started! He's great in this, I always mimic his hand gestures at the "Raah!" And Voiceplay, those clever little guys played a bit of a trick on their fans in this. It's a bit of a story, so apologies if this is too long a comment, but I think you'll be amused. During lockdown, and also in a couple examples where their featured guest couldn't get to them, Voiceplay will do videos where they're seperate from their guests, so there'd be the four main members (also sometimes separated) in one shot, while their guest would be either green screened in, or filmed their parts separately, alone. (See VP's "Enemy" with Alexa for an example. Home Free also does a lot of videos like that.) Anyway, when this video came out, J. None had left for the Naval choir not long before. So because he starts off alone in this video, most of us Voiceplaya's thought he was off with the Navy, and starts off doing his part separately, so everyone figured "Oh, he did his part wherever he's stationed, seperate, then Voiceplay edited him in" Then suddenly, he's in the hall with them! So we realized he wasn't seperate at all, we'd been fooled. Voiceplay likes to do little gags on their fans like that. I love these guys.

To get his lowest notes, Geoff uses a technique called subharmonics, which (in an oversimplified nutshell) involves applying vocal fry on top of a sung note to produce a subharmonic (like a reverse overtone) which is exactly one octave lower than the sung note. He has a couple of tutorials on his channel that you could look at or even react to that might be helpful. Those notes he sings that are super low but sound kind of buzzy are subharmonics, and its one of the few techniques bass singers tend to use to hit lower notes. My chest range bottoms out at about G2 on an average day but I've used subs to hit a B1 reliably, and Geoff's lowest recorded chest note is an F1 and has hit a B0 in subs at the lowest so who knows what you'd be able to hit with a bit of practice.
@johndeeregreen4592
@johndeeregreen4592 4 ай бұрын
In theory, Geoff should be able to hit an F0 subharmonic. And, most people can hit subharmonics a couple semitones below the full octave below their chest range. So, with practice, Geoff should be able to hit D#0 or even D0. I really don't think we've seen low notes anywhere near what Geoff is capable of. A bass singer with as low of a chest range as Geoff, he should be able to fry into the negative octaves without much trouble. My chest range goes down to E1 (only one semitone deeper than Geoff's) and I can fry into the 2nd negative octave, so I know Geoff can, too.

Glad you enjoyed VoicePlay's more theatrical video of Valhalla Calling! While it's not the MOST theatrical I've seen them go, with all of the elements they used, it's up there with their best! Eli (nice job on getting all of the names, BTW!) did the backgrounds they used for the video, using a video-game graphics engine combined with a studio that has walls of LEDs to program. To show their love for their craft - on the day they shot the video, the studio didn't have any air conditioning, and with them inside and wearing (fake) furs, it got pretty toasty! Nice catch on Geoff's B0 - I've seen a number of reactors who seem to miss that completely, then are blown away by the end of his solo verse of "shields and spears". One of the things that has always impressed me about Geoff when he goes low is that he's still completely understandable - a lot of basses seem to get "muddy" with their pronunciation down there, but Geoff is very legible wherever he goes. I'll put in a recommendation for one that isn't rock, isn't theatrical - I Can't Make You Love Me, their cover of the Bonnie Raitt hit. You may need to prepare with a hankie or tissues - they do a really good job of bringing out the emotions on this one!

Geoff is good friends with Tim (bass for Home Free) & they were on the same season of The Sing Off. Geoff credits Tim with helping him perfect those super low subharmonics. Home Free members, Voice Play members and Avi Kaplan (original bass for Pentatonix) have guested in each other's videos. And Kirstie (from Pentatonix) has guested with Voctave, a much larger & amazing a capella choir based at Disney World in Florida. A capella is a close family and they are all absolutely amazing! ❤ Also, Layne (beat boxer for Voice Play) is part owner of PattyCake Productions Studios where VP films most of their videos. His partner there is Tony, who used to be the Voice Play baritone. You can see Tony in their videos of Road Trip (hilarious 😂) and Phantom of the Opera with Rachel Potter. He did a cameo as the cathedral guard in their recent video of Hellfire.

Do look up VoicePlay's Sleeping in the Cold Below that they just did. My second best a capella group is The Bass Gang. There are 2 members from the US (Peter Barber - opera singer and reaction/analysis, as well as Bobby Bass), Tomi P is in the Czech Republican and the fourth member, Marwan Ayman is in Egypt. They did a 4 songs of Disney that the 4 basses sung. Arabian Nights (Marwan as lead, stuck in Egypt because of the visa), Be Prepared (Tomi P), Gaston (Peter), Friend Like Me (Bobby). Their manager had to cover for Marwan in Be Prepared. They are all really good basses with some great extension.

His most recent was Creep, and before that, Eleanor Rigby. In Eleanor Rigby, they had recently lost their high tenor. The arrangement was done. A little tidbit about the "extra bit" where their Patreon list is, that's actually a sample of the Karaoke version of the song they just performed. So, you can be the star of every song you hear them performing yourself, with them as back up. This song showcased Eli's abilities with Unreal Engine 5, yet again. All of the ship and outdoor scenes were graphics done by Eli, using Unreal 5, as were portions of the inside "barn" set. The lighting was, and usually is in a Voice Play video, Eli as well. Video was Layne, as was first vocal mixing and mastering, because this was "his" project, his arrangement. He had the help of whomever in the group he needed, yes, but the majority of it is on the person whose project it is. I know people have mentioned Geoff's solo work, so I don't need to do that. I would recomend, though, that you check out some of the work put out by Paddy Cake Productions, the studio they shoot most of their videos at, and of which Layne is part owner. They have some really great stuff in their own rite. Their Villans Lair series comes heavily to mind.

Dude, a G1 makes you possibly a lower singer than Geoff himself - he names A1 as his ‘always there’ normal chest range. You are definitely a bass if that’s your low end. so if you can figure out subharmonics, you should be able to sing along with him on most songs. Sometimes he goes super high because he’s a madman.

Great reaction!! And, you've already made it onto the Reactor's compilation of Geoff Castellucci's B0 & Low Notes Reaction - Valhalla Calling Acapella ft. J.NONE video that just released. You got almost top billing. Enjoy! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLKWrMd1m7rWZ4U.htmlsi=-3j_oH4RHK3K9c6F

I think you still have them wrong. Just to get it straight. JNone is the guy outside, the one who raps later. Layne is the beatboxer, on the far left. Cesar is next to Layne. He has the tall hairstyle. Eli is shorter and bald. You got Geoff right, as who can miss his bass anyway.
