This isn't a criticism or an attack, but simply my opinion: being a soldier is _very_ different to the other jobs on your list, the motivations for serving are _very very_ different than applying for civil or civilian jobs, and the purpose of a soldier is just about the exact opposite as those of the other jobs that are listed. I also don't think it's right nor fair for person A to "tell" the general public why persons B thru ZZZZZZZ choose to do what they do, and that boiling the decision to volunteer to put the safety and security of your nation and her people above the value of your own life down to "badges of honour and being authoritative" is somewhat belittling to say the least.. To elaborate, and with the utmost respect and admiration to the brave, hard working women and men who work these jobs: The purpose of a police occifer is to help people, save people, and make society safer for people. Sometimes that puts them at risk of violence, sometimes it puts them in a position where they have to do violence, but they also resolve neighbour disputes and sit in speed camera vans for eight hours a day. They're primarily _"helpers",_ and we're lucky to have them looking after us. The purpose of a firefighter is solely to rescue people, save people, and help people. They're there night or day, rain or shine, ready to pluck us from the jaws of death, to run _in to_ the bowels of hell so they can drag us out of the heat, flame, and smoke in to the cold, clean, fresh air outside. Now I have to say, I'm not prone to panicking, and like to think I'm fairly resilient, but as for being a firefighter? No way, not happening, you can poke it. I've been in/involved in/set on fire far more times than is reasonable, and I have to say it's fcuking terrifying. They're helpers, savers. Security guards reduce shoplifting, deter people from going in to building sites at night time, stop people from wandering in to places that are out of bounds, things like that. Whilst it's not without risk, their primary functions are to look vaguely intimidating, check ID badges, and tell off old ladies who walk straight past the _"This section of the museum is CLOSED"_ sign. It's a competent person to call 999 in an emergency, operate CCTV camera's and gather evidence for when the police show up, then manage crowd control once they do. They're helpers. Soldiers _(at least those who serve in the Regiments rather than the Corps')_ are the opposite of this. Strip away the public relations spin, the fluffy puppies, and the 'adventure training' with Don't Stop Me Now by Queen playing on continuous loop in the background, and you'll find the primary function of a squaddie is to kill people. To do lethal violence on an industrial scale to people who seek to harm others. When diplomacy, negotiations, political discourse, sanctions, and everything else has failed, it's a heartbreakingly sad fact of this barbaric world we live in that sometimes there is no other option to protect the people and things we value so deeply from those who would seek to harm them than to destroy those who wish to do so. I'm a firm believer that extraordinary tasks like this should only be carried out by enthusiastic, willing volunteers. A lot - not all but a lot - of men who fall in to that category are not always upstanding pillars of the community who watch Songs of Praise while eating a small bowl of chicken soup then go to bed at 1900hrs to be up bright and early for bird spotting club. There is a need for and a supply of _(albeit a dwindling, very much reduced one in todays world)_ rough, hard men who take pleasure in and gain gratification from hurting other people, who would naturally do extreme violence to others, that can be at least partially trained to respond to commands. Like how we use German Sheppard's as guard or attack dogs because they're easily trained, will tear off flesh and shatter bones on command, but also are the only breed on Earth that will _release_ on command every single time, even when they're in "the madness" or a "blood frenzy". As the saying goes; _The meek sleep soundly in soft warm beds only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf._ It's not about badges or about honour, often it's a deliberate choice to follow instincts.
