Would love to know exactly what the controls are doing. Is one pitch and the other vectoring? Is the throttle shown in the inset?

Nice to see one of the old tugs! The new ones are so much more powerful but I like the classic look of this one.

The Sound of the engine make me goose bumps. Sounds like Swedish torpedoboat of worldwar 2.

Nice coincidence; I took a series of pictures of the same Nefryt, a couple of hours before!

Are all of these videos shot over the stern? Sometimes I can't tell.

Is that a split hull dredge moored around the 5:30 mark? Love the videos of the tugs. The engines sound incredible.

+Diesel and Iron Yes that is a split dredge indeed :)

Would I be wrong in guessing that there are two propellers(turntables)? Also Looking at the Control-Panel as I see it; Occasionally a button upper left of the wheel is pressed. What does it do? Winch hydraulic motors perhaps? Last question: Is it possible to push in opposing directions at the same time? ie If a tug were were along side and a long ship were being blown by wind to crush the tug against the dock; Could it push water toward the ship and the dock thereby separating them? With two rotors, perhaps I would expect perhaps but with one? Could the rotors starve each other of water? Thanks for your time and good video.

+David Oxland You are correct ! There are 2 Voith Schneider Units in this tug. The button is the communication between pilot/tug. It's not possible to set the propellers in opposite directions, the rudder controls both units at the same time. In the situation you describe the effect of both props pushing outside will have the same result as both pushing to 1 side. If it would be possible to put them both to the opposite direction they would starve eachother indeed. There will not be enough waterflow in the small space between both props to 'feed' them water :)

Very good videos, the sound of the engines coming throw those exhaust is so relaxing ... It has got ABC engines like the 7200 hp tug, right ?
@ShippingHarbors
@ShippingHarbors 9 жыл бұрын
Tyconniendu59 Hello, no this tug 'only' has 2x 1450hp ABC 6Cyl. A huge difference to the 7200hp ones :)

Shipping/Harbors Ok, but this is still ABC engines :D Huge difference in sound between the 12 cylinder engine and the 6 cylinder engine :o

Amazing video. It seems you have a precise control of the tug. Is that because this tug is using the Voith system ?
@ShippingHarbors

+Daeron Barth It's because i can control it :) If you don't have experience you will not be able to control it ;-)

What do the levers and the wheel control? I take it one is forward and reverse and the other left and right?
@noah9241
@noah9241 9 жыл бұрын
Each of the levers control a different engine, so he can control both of them. The wheel is for the rudder, to turn
@ShippingHarbors
@ShippingHarbors 9 жыл бұрын
Noah Timmer Correct ! The wheel however also controls the same propellers as the levers do, but this is for steering. So the levers control forward/astern pitch, and the wheel controls port/starboard pitch.

How is the main engine RPM controlled? I presume it's not linked to the levers?
@ShippingHarbors
@ShippingHarbors 9 жыл бұрын
The rpm is controlled with buttons, they are just outside the picture :)

Shipping/Harbors Ah right, got ya! Are the engine speeds preset?
@ShippingHarbors
@ShippingHarbors 9 жыл бұрын
On the tug in the video they are preset yes. 500rpm (idle/starting rpm), 600,700,750,800,850,900. On this video you can see the rpm getting lowered at 4:34 marker. The buttons are under the lever controls

Shipping/Harbors Many thanks for clarifying that! I assume there is no need for slipping clutches or gearboxes to reduce the voith units input shaft speed? My fathers last two tugs had telegraph positions where the clutches would slip and then would lock up fully.
@ShippingHarbors
@ShippingHarbors 9 жыл бұрын
Deiniol Pook There is in fact a clutch build in the shaft, but i don't know the english name. We call it (free translated) turbo-clutch. It's meant for safety when the propeller gets locked (by a morring line or so). The clutch will then start to slip preventing enginedamage. But in normall conditions this will never slip.
