The Korg Volca FM is Korg's latest installment in the Volca series. It's a wonderful sounding little FM synthesiser, with a quick sequencer, and full in depth FM editing capabilities.
Here's a lengthy tutorial where I'm taking you through the sounds, the sequencer, quick editing, in depth editing, playing it with an external MIDI keyboard, and also editing with a compatible iPad software called Patch Base.
Since FM synthesis by nature is somewhat technical, please be patient and take your time to understand it. Once you grasp the concept, I don't think it's "difficult", but it requires you to keep a lot of information in your head at once. And even though youre getting good with it, it still requires time and precision.
I think it sounds absolutely wonderful. And anything that sounds wonderful is, in my opinion, worth learning.
Cheers
CUCKOO

cuckoomusic Yes my man. Check my channel if you have a chance to see what I was able to do with both DX7 models. And thats another thing alot of people are overlooking about the miracle Korg have given us. THE UNISON FUNCTION. When you add that to an FM BASS or strings and chorus. FM becomes as fat and powerful as analogue. I will let you know when I start uploading demos of the VOLCA FM from March. Just the drum sounds FM is capable of are amazing. Thats why ive been an FM addict since 1991.

Ha, loved you just sneaking some Castlevania melodies in there ;-) Great tutorial man, I'm also feeling the retro-game sentimentality in this, big time. Old Amiga games, Megadrive and even SNES stuff. And those glacial sounds......so much sentimental stuff in this unit, if you grew up in the 80s and 90s, and to able to use an Arpeggiator with it? Too good. Love it. Keep up the good work, Cuckoo, thanks mate.

Definitely the best Volca FM tutorial I've seen, I will most definitely be purchasing one of these soon. I get fed up with people complaining about how hard programming FM synthesis is, I had a DX100 for years and absolutely loved the work flow. The fact this is so much cheaper and so much more in depth than the reface DX is astounding to me, Yamaha really dropped the ball there!

Just revisited this video because I couldn't figure out how to make a tremolo on the volca FM and remembered that you did kind of the same with your "pseudo echo". When I found the part I saw that you had the same problems figuring it out I had LOL. Anyway, without your videos I guess I wouldn't have understood how FM works at all. Meanwhile I have 3 old realtime editable Yamaha Portasound synths (PSS-380, PSS-680 and PSR-36) fool around with plus a TX7, which I don't even get connected to some editing software (guess I need to update the OS or so). What I want to say is: thank you for your great videos! You rule!

Great video. I think the more common (correct?) pronunciation of "synthesis" is with the vowel in "the" sounding like the word "the".

Just wanted to say thanks for this. You know what you're talking about, you're very watchable and have a great manner. I now know stuff about the Volca FM I would never have got from the (very limited) instruction sheet. So keep up the fantastic work - you're great.

The other day I went to a guitar shop and asked what would be a good instrument to pick up if you're a grown adult with absolutely zero musical knowledge or talent who wants to learn to play something, and the guy recommended this. Would you agree that this particular device would be useful for someone like me who just wants to get their feet wet, or would I be wasting my money? To me it looks like an affordable little gadget that could be fun to fiddle with, regardless of how deep or not I choose to get into all the nuances. That said, I recognize that part of my enthusiasm is based on the fact that every demonstration I've seen has been by someone who knows what they're doing and that it's probably much harder than it looks. I also recognize that self-teaching as an adult with a job and other priorities is going to be an uphill battle. Still, though, if it turns out this is the gateway I need it could lead to a very fulfilling hobbyist experience. I'd like to know your thoughts, though. Thanks!

Hi Dani. Hm... The Volca FM is not something I would recommend as a first step. I like it for its quirky FM sound, and its full fledged classic FM engine. But it is quite fiddly to experiment with making your own sounds, and the sequencer is not all that amazing. If you really like the sound of it, it’s definitely worth it. But as a beginner you might find it a frustrating little piece. It comes down to what you wanna do, I guess, and what you like. If you want something with a traditional keyboard that you can play, it’s better to get a synth that has that. If you wanna try making sequences with some tweaks along the sequence, I often recommend checking out the Novation Circuit. It has a lot of value for the money, and is a great first step to sequencing electronic music.

I mean I do like the sound of the Volca FM, and the price means I can buy it, fiddle with it, and if I don't like it I can set it aside and come back to it later or give it to a friend and not feel bad about the money spent. I would say the Novation Circuit crosses the threshold into something that you should only buy if it's something you know you're going to love, and ultimately I can't know that until I spend more time with sequencers. I would say cost has always been a bit of a barrier to entry for me in terms of learning to play some kind of instrument. Obviously I want to spend money on a good piece of equipment that will serve me well, but I'm very wary of sinking too much cash into something that doesn't pan out for me.

I love Korg Volcas! They run on batteries, have speaker, cheap/affordable and sound amazing for value compared to gear that costs twice as much.

cuckoomusic could you please release your patches on your shop but so it can be imputed in the sync in because I’m sure many of us like myself want to buy your patches but can’t because we don’t have the midi equipment to put on syx files our Volca fm’s

I tried several times but I found it to be unreliable. It failed too many times. The Volca FM is too sensitive to volume. I don’t know why. I’ll try again and see if I can make it reliable. But if I put something up there that doesn’t work for everyone, I will get a lot of complaints 😬 so that’s why I didn’t include the audio data files.
