In the 6th century AD, a series of catastrophic weather events struck large parts of the world, marked by temperature fluctuations, crop failures, and widespread famines. These phenomena could be linked to a massive volcanic eruption in the tropics, raising questions about the ability of a localized natural disaster to influence global climate and alter the course of history. Today, as urban populations near volcanoes expand, the risk of a volcanic catastrophe increases, starting from the Campi Flegrei volcano in Italy and existing eruptions in Iceland. Scientists delve into historical data to comprehend potential future global impacts of volcanic eruptions, exploring the delicate balance between human civilization and the dormant power of Earth's volcanoes.

I really enjoyed this documentary, despite the sound issues. Terrific mix of historical re-enactments, interviews with experts from many scientific branches as well as eyewitness accounts and views from communities living in the shadow of future eruptions. Regarding the sound problem that other people have commented on, it gets really badly distorted approximately 20 minutes from the end which is a real shame and even the poor subtitles got confused then, lol. 10/10 if the sound had been decent, so I would still give this 7/10. Thank you for sharing 👍

Volcanic "ash" isn't ash at all. It's superheated rock dust. Grind up a house brick, heat it to 1000 degrees, and scatter it in the air. Now imagine a billion tons of it going 85mph. That's a pyroclastic flow.

A mystery surrounding Yellowstone, it's last eruption was titanic, one of the largest on record, while it killed many animals there Doesn't seem to be a mass extinction associated with the volcanic explosion.

How haunting are those images of faces, suddenly gazing at us, blank eyed, out of the dark earth, deep deep below ground at Teotihuacan! 18 centuries they've been staring into the black. Waiting for what? I know it wasn't relevant to a volcano doc, but I jolly wish someone had expounded on those for just a moment or so. Often explaining objects, so full of portent, merely deflates, but in this case, there could hardly be an explanation that would disappoint.
