Hekla Volcano was known as the “Gateway to Hell” during the Middle Ages.
@AvanaVana
@AvanaVana Жыл бұрын
Yet volcanoes are creative forces, building up this island over the last 15-20 million years, which otherwise would sink forever beneath the waves, its lavas and ashes rich with chemical compounds and nutrients essential for life, and the gases that they release insulate the surface of our planet from the cold, near absolute zero vacuum of space, and provide the primary source of carbon necessary for the growth and life of the plants and many bacteria that collectively represent 93.7% of the biomass on earth (plants=82.4%, bacteria=12.8%, archaea=1.5%, while oxygen-breathing animals account for just 0.4%) and represent the foundation of all ecosystems and the very basis for life on this planet. Many of the world’s greatest civilizations-the Greeks, Romans, Mayans, Aztecs, Inca, Japanese-to name a few, built their civilizations directly on volcanoes and with the nutrient and material bounty that volcanism provides: volcanic soils for agricultural, pozzolan ash for concrete, basalt for paved roads, etc. Volcanism is a regenerative, energetic, and creative force, without which this earth would otherwise be a drowned, lifeless ocean world. This makes the Norse conception of hell as the drowned, frozen, lifeless world of Niflheim much closer to the actual antithesis of life and creation than the Dantean/Christian inferno, with which volcanoes have wrongfully been connected since medieval times.
