Ubiquitous. This is the best word to describe the Volkswagen Beetle, which had over 21 million vehicles churned out during a 75-year production. Yet even with so many cars produced, one would still be hard pressed to find two Beetles customized in the same way. Maybe it is the idea of endless customization possibilities that endears so many to the Beetle, or perhaps it is that behind these cars there are no two owners alike. With every Beetle bought and sold comes a Volkswagen story.

Your lovely words about the Beetle blended very well with the visual aspects thrown-in! You obviously adore the Beetle - an icon of our time,and will be an era which will never be repeated. For this very reason, grab yourself a Beetle before they all become too valuable to own! In my opinion, the Beetle of any age or marque, was the first real Porsche in disguise! I rescued a burnt-out (engine fire) '71 Beetle from being crushed in a Car Scrapyard. Honestly, a real wreck! On its' side and red rust had formed all over the rear of the car from the inferno that caused "The Scrap Yard Detention Centre" to be its' permanent and deadly ending. I paid AUD 500 to the Scrapyard to release this 'wreck' into my care. I had never owned any VW car at all, but the 'wreck' cast its' spell upon me. As you spoke, you said that "I didn't find the Volkswagen, but the Volkswagen found me". This Scrapyard Wreck of a '71 Beetle really took hold of me in the same manner - it found me! I will finish off by writing that (in the first 12 months of restoration), it was a beautiful Learning Curve in understanding not just the seating or bodywork, but the whole car - inside out. Car cost to restore was AUD 14K. In the fifteen years of ownership, with a full engine rebuild way back in 2005. With Electronic ignition (No Contact Breakers points to set, and the timing is extremely precise) was most probably the best thing that ensured that the Beetle started first time, every time. My Beetle has become almost a family member, and the thrill of ownership does not diminish, but grows over time.........Your words are also very prophetic: "Sometimes we change a car, and sometimes we find the car changes us" This really applied to me and the influential Beetle! That's my story for you.Greetings from Australia.

1967. My favorite year. 12 volt, more power than the older Bug's with 90% of the original design intact and unmarred by safety bumpers etc. Decades ago my friend had a white 67. He did what I never really indulged in with the few older air cooled VW's. He put a moderately larger big bore kit in it. Along with tubing aftermarket performance exhaust and a bigger, new single carb. I found out right then how easy it is to wake these air cooled wonders up. A modest big bore kit with no change of stroke probably didn't bump displacement up past 1647 -1700 at best. Felt like those engine mods added 50hp to that engine and made it a much more fun and practical car to drive.

As the owner of a 1970 Volkswagen Beetle in Yukon Yellow, I must say that this video is brilliant. It captures the essence of the car and really gives us a glimpse into the owner's infatuation with it. Also, this is my new favorite channel. You find the cooler old iconic cars that aren't the '65 Mustangs and the '69 Camaros and the brand-new Ferraris or Bugattis. You don't pick the obvious choices and instead opt for far more interesting ones. Kudos to you. Keep 'em coming; I'll keep watching!

It´s the smell of the interior I love!! I´ve had 3 Beetles and a fastback over the years and they all had the smell. I just could not get enough of it!! The other thing was that fantastic whine from the engine, unburstable!!

One question: Do you know of one can have an AC installed in a bug, especially in a similar version/year beetle? So when are Petrolicious going to do the other VW classic, the Golf Gti, come on, it warrants a feature, it is the quintessential hot hatch, the first and still the best drivers car, you could feature me, but you'd have supply me with the car, its a dream car, that I've owned, and sadly sold, and have longed to get back. Its been a long love affair, that keeps calling me back, there hasn't been a car made since that stirs me more, other than a 911 Porsche (air cooled only). Its a Volkswagen thang, that some just don't get...I get it, I get it by the truck load! Please do a feature on the mighty Golf Gti.

This owner is correct - the 1967 is THE year to own. Last year for the slim bumpers, motor now upgraded to 1500cc and 53hp, the first 12 volt electrical system used in Beetles, reworked rear suspension, glass cover over sealed beam headlights eliminated, dual brake system added, new two-speed wipers, new vertical mounting for rear license plate. I, too, would opt for the chrome wheels formerly used on the Porsche 356 but I'd keep the stock 1967 flat hubcaps, and I'd look for an original accessory AMFM mono radio.

I had a '67 as well, and I agree with you about being the best year ever. The deluxe got that 1500 from the bus, but there was no added on pollution control yet. As you say, 12Volts, new headlights, old style bumpers, etc. This particular car has some strangeness though. The window winder handles have the older white small knobs, but mine had bigger black plastic ones. The tail light turn signals on this one were amber, like the European beetles. I've never seen them in North America. The backup lights were right for '67, but the bumper over riders were bent down towards the middle to accommodate the newer, squarer engine compartment lid, but not on this car. I miss that car.
@brianchisnell1548

To me, my '64 is the best year! Last year small windows. Last year flat windshield. Last year verticle wind wing frame. Last year Porsche/VW heater knob. Last year center mount sun visors. And...1st year metal Porsche crank open sunroof! Same as a 356. The changes on a '67 were mostly mandatory safety upgrades. Top speed on a 40hp is 72 mph. In 67 its 77 mph. The bumpers on his '67 are not correct. And the rubber gaskets on them are to hide poor workmanship. Cheapie aftermarket stuff that are not tripple chrome. Beautiful car though!!!

The old split and oval windows are cool but 1967 is my favorite year. 12 volt for the first time and sealed beam headlights. More powerful and all syncro trans. but not the govt. mandated changes that alter the natural evolution. Love to have a nice straight 67 and hop up the engine and trans. to produce 140hp or so. Although i think less power than that would still give me huge grins. Still, it would be nice to be able to pull the front wheels in a couple of gears.
