My 1st car 1962 1200cc, 90000 miles on the clock when I bought it ,I was an apprentice and Rolls Royce , 170000miles when I sold it 3years later. No oil consumption between servicing. Only thing I replaced was the heat exchanger / silencer. Tyres and normal stuff. Forgot to say in Primrose Yellow. Previous one owner retired couple, it was immaculate!! Probably my best ever buy. Loved t to bits, just the right car for a lowly paid apprentice in those day Bob nice to be reminded ,even if it has changed somewhat. Cheers Keith

Bob - great video as always. I'm the crazy guy commenting with you on your last Sunday Service about buying a white "Design" 1.2 TSI Beetle later this month. Looking at the VW configurator there is no mention of the 1.4 petrol TSI you're driving. Doesn't bother me anyway, I'm looking for Aul Fella style rather than speed (I only realised lately that the the lowest 3 speed points hits your insurance cost by about €90 a year for 3 years!).

Only picking up on this review now Bob. Yes, I have a white Beetle but (sadly) I’m no hipster. However you’re right, I drive it for fun & not as a workhorse. Love the colour and spec of your test car. Hope your right on the replacement being an EV. Bring it on man.

Γιώργος Βαρδ I'd aim for the last ever 1st gen made. Avoid the diesels, who wants to hear a tractor when the roof is down

One big turn off is the red turn signal lights in the rear, they should be bright yellow not red. But, it is a cute car.

In addition to new cars being better , they are also safer! Consumer Reports did a crash of a 2009 Chevy Malibu ( i think your Vaxhual Insignia) with a 1959 Chevy Bell Air...look that up on youtube...yeah the Bel Air is sexy and cool, but you are walking away from the crash in the Malibu.

Bob we have a VW. Don't get me started on all the things that have gone wrong with it...currently BOTH rear doors don't unlock. I'm not sure what "classic" cars you were associated with in the 70's and 80's that were "crap" but I have 2 Japanese ones with a combined age of 79 years that beat the pseudo quality of a VW. Do they break down? No. Do the rear doors unlock? Yes. Do I prefer them? Yes.

harolds789 That was supposed to be a Clarkson reference. I loved how Clarkson mocked Porsche for the apparent lack of innovation in the exterior of the 911.

I'd buy a beetle, I love beetles. It's just a preference, a choice, and a style and it's not a bad car, in fact it's a pretty decent one and it's for everybody, you don't have to want to make a statement or dress up in a specific way to drive it because that's just stupid and narrow minded if someone sees this, or any other similar cars, ONLY in that way.

I’ve bought one Darren and love it. In the past, I’ve driven Opels, Alfa’s, BMW 5 series & Merc E class estate. Main priority when choosing a car is to please yourself & ignore all others. Life is too short to worry about image.
