Volkswagen Bus Tires. What kind of tires should you buy?

We head out into the hills to test out the 195 75R14 BFG All Terrain and the 27X8.50R14 General Grabber. Both tires are 6 ply and offer a semi aggressive all terrain tread pattern. Comment below and let us know what tires you prefer on your VW Bus. Thanks for watching. JC.

I've had Hankooks on my '76 bay Zebrabus for many years and many miles. They’re recommended for their superior loadrange sidewall strength. Very happy.

I use the General Grabber AT2 on my bay. I love them especially in really bad rain. The tall groves flush the water right out to keep excellent traction. I've also seen some of the Interco tires on buses. much more aggressive tread pattern and narrower. I think those may work pretty well .

I run Bighorn Maxxis MT-762 ...27x8.50R14LT mud terrain . Just love them.👍🏻

Hankook RA18 commercial tires are great for 14" x 5" rims. Their 195R/14 measure in at 26.2" tall, to help bring your freeway revs down just a bit. Great tires. Maybe not for mud, but with the selection for sturdy truck tires which fit 14" rims getting smaller, these are a good option to consider. You won't regret it!

I have a 73 campmobile and tires are 20 years old. Had a blowout last fall so I’m in the market for a new set. It is a camper bus so it goes to the mountains fairly often. I’ll look into those general grabbers and the hankook ra18

I'm rocking 205/65R15 Michelin Defenders on EMPI five spokes for my '70 Transporter. The handle pretty close to the same weight as a LT185R14 but are really close to the fenders on the rear. They look cool though.

Hi, I have a 1987 Vanagon Transporter I use for camping trips. ? Did you mount the 27X8.50R14 General Grabber tires on the stock 5.5" rims? Or did you get custom rims. How did they handle on the highway for stability and sway? Did they rub the frame or any other part of the car? Please advise. Thank you. Eric W

I hit a raised manhole cover and blew a belt in mine!! (Not any of these tires tho!! ) Now I'm lookin for a good road tire. Love the look of the general. Just wonder how they run on dry pavement? Are they extra noisy?

Volkswear I sent some pics. Was there any issue with clearance on the grabbers? 27x8.5 equals out to about 215/75 in metric. Beeeeefy!

Anthony Watts The Grabbers actually measure at about 25.75X7.5. Not sure why they are that much smaller than their advertised. One explanation was that the 27X8.50 is a rotating dimension with the idea that the tires expand slightly when rotating. Not sure about this bit that it how someone justified the size. There are zero clearance issues on these tires mounted on a Split Bus. JC.

I like these buses and now starting to research on them. I would love to own one someday soon. What do you guys recommend looking at to know what to buy? I have very little knowledge of VW anything other than company stuff but nothing about these vehicles. I know they sold the heck out of them for decades. Some look to be lifted or are they all that way? Great ground clearance!

I don't know of anyone who has a VW bus (other than torsion bar adjustments), they just have a good ground clearance by design. I know a few guys who've done obscene things to slam their VW's though...

i had general grabbers on my Thing, theyre great until you get buried to the frame haha then the only thing that'll save you is a winch or a tug from a helpful stranger

I was about to buy tires for my 1979 VW Transporter Type 2. Then I saw this article on tires. "Most passenger car tires are dangerous to use on your VW van. Here's why." www.busdepot.com/details/tires/#requirements I am looking for tires that meet VW Specs, for a 14" rim. All of my driving is on city streets and highways. Any recommendations? Thank you.

I’m going with the maxxis buckshots, have a friend that has them and loves them. Honestly I just like how they look so aggressive compared to other tires...plus they come in 14 inch. www.maxxis.com/catalog/tire-514-104-buckshot-mudder-ii-mt-764
