Volkswagen ID.3 is a compact EV, the successor to the e-Golf, and the first of VW’s model range based on the MEB platform dedicated to electric cars. Three in the name is the segment designation, with 1 reserved for the A segment, and 2 for the B or supermini segment. I also heard a marketing spin that the ID.3 is VW’s first breakthrough model after the Beetle and the Golf, because it starts the era of mass e-mobility.
Why not simply new e-Golf, e-Tiguan, e-Polo? Because in order to make the e-Golf happen, the engineers had to stuff all the electric bits and bobs into a car designed for an internal combustion engine. You can swap the engine and the fuel tank for an electric motor and some batteries, but that’s not an optimum solution. It’s better to design a new layout on a new platform, and build on that.
It would be difficult to add more batteries to the e-Golf. Denser batteries - yes, but not bigger. In case of the MEB, there’s space between the front and the rear axle to add or remove some batteries depending on the range the client needs. And you can add AWD as well.
↔ Volkswagen ID.3 dimensions:
✔ length: 4261 mm
✔ width: 1809 mm
✔ height: 1568 mm
✔ wheelbase: 2770 mm
✔ boot/trunk: 385 L
💲 Volkswagen ID.3 starting price: 36 500 euro
💲 Volkswagen ID.3 1st Plus price as tested: 46 000 euro

Somehow I can't fall in love with ID.3. I'm not sure why but first thing coming to my mind is "too many bizarre solutions". Still can't understand the touch panel on the left (lamps), or common switch for front and rear windows. This car .... I feel it is more cold calculation that warm or hot emotions in it. What I like about the review is the way you did it Mr Marek :-) Professionalist - as usually. Thumb up for review, down for the car. Thanks !

Funny how emotional the rear window switch is debated - some love it others hate it - maybe it depends how often you even would use it? - I like the clean very reduced interior - one common denominator seems to be that it's a very solid built and fun to drive car but the SW is lacking - luckily there is hope as the SW can be updated :D at least there is hope :D

excellent KZfaqr Bjorn Nyland likes the ID.3 pretty much, even though he is a Tesla guy. Quiet, comfortable, quick-charging, is his verdict. On one of his 1k km contests the VW fared pretty well, a bit better than Kona and the other Koreans, though not quite up there with Tesla. At a good price, it's the mid-range EV to have.

I am a former Golf owner and now I have an ID.3 1st Max - preordered on the first day. I disagree with you on several points - for one, it’s a perfect long distance car and after having driven some 8 hour motorway drives, it was confirmed. Check out Tesla Bjørn’s 1000km challenge and you will see the ID.3 beats most others. The lane assist you complain about can be adjusted in the settings although many people complain about it anyway as it’s a “lane departure assist” in the ID.3 plus that you were driving not a fully functional lane assist that comes in the Max. It’s true there are many SW bugs and the update that should fix them and add the missing functionality is not coming until early 2021 for the 1st owners. From Dec 1st, new cars will come with the update pre-installed. It’s unfortunate but it was either put up with these issues or wait to take delivery until the end of the year - as a bonus, those of us that chose to be early adopters got some incentives like free winter wheels and tires.
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 3 жыл бұрын
Oh please, you get incentives like these (or just simply money off) at any end-of-year sale. In Poland VW was offering 3 months "free" lease... for all its cars, because of covid, so it was no incentive. As much as I appreciate Tesla Bjørn's thorough reviews, he also drives in optimum conditions. In optimum conditions I drove the KIA e-Niro for 420 km, and had 40 km range left at the end of the journey. Speeding things up a bit in the e-Soul I was down to about 400, and driving "normally" it would be even less. As I said - this is a great city car, but it has the same problem as all EVs - unless you have good charging infrastructure, it is useless on longer trips. I don't mind 15-20 minutes charging break. I just mind not being able to charge :)
@SeriouslyJaded
@SeriouslyJaded 3 жыл бұрын
@@MarekDrives the "covid" incentive was no such thing. This was offered in many countries to those of us that chose to accept the ID.3 before the sw was finished. Some of us also get free service for 3 years and additional "early adopter" incentives. I do not agree the TB drives in "optimum conditions". And of course the charging infrastructure needs to be there but that goes without saying - here in Norway, it is. :P

Hey Marek, can I ask that in which car brands and why put some poles an ”A” in the end of the name? I have noticed here in KZfaq that some poles says for example ”Volkswagena” or ”Hyundaia” or ”Nissana”. I have noticed that they say that even when they says also after that the name of the model like ”Hyundaia Tucson” or ”Forda Kuga” etc. And at least in Nissan, they use the A even in the end of model names like ”Nissana Qashqaia”, why?
@MarekDrives

Grammar. This is a Volkswagen - to jest Volkswagen This is a Volkswagen review - to jest test Volkswagena The latter is bad for SEO, but sometimes you want to say something like "Volkswagen's competitors" which is "konkurent Volkswagena". You could go around it by saying "Volkswagen has a competitor" - " Volkswagen ma konkurenta. But that makes the title or sentence longer.

Same thing. "Konkurent Volkswagena Arteona", "Volkswagen Arteon ma konkurenta". The A is at the end of the attributive, like apostrophe S ('S) in English. But the A is added to all elements of the attributive. In general, of course, because there are some exceptions.

you are just the best car reviewer, you never go by the hype and just say the truth, what doesn't mean, that the car is bad. Just not good. When I saw first time the id3 in any video I just thought "what?". We call it in german "hybridization" (maybe Hermafrodyta in polish), something between two things. It's not for this purpose great and not fot the other, and for me it's too "cheaply" wanted to be "in any case" a design peace. And this gear shifter... I don't continue, comment would be blocked by moral guardian Google.

Thanks for a great review. I will only touch upon the road-trip part, as I did one in our Tesla mid October this year. Not a pleasure cruise due to circumstances other than the pandemic, but we made an adventure out of it. Total of 3800 km return trip, 16 stops for charging, 180wh/km. Due to regulations we couldn’t sleep in a hotel, so we slept in the car. Lovely experience, but judging by your report on id1, it is definitely not the vehicle of choice for touring around the content.

It is a compact car, so I'd not recommend it for sleeping, unless you are a student, and you don't care where you sleep :) A charging stop every 250 km is what I'd expect, but at the same time I know it adds so much time to the journey which could be done much quicker. It can be done though.

Wait, wow, why would you not use the ID3 for longer distance travelling. It pretty much has the same ranges of the Tesla model 3 SR+ and LR with the 58 and 77kWh batteries respectively,... and it is 10000EUR cheaper. I realy don’t see your point there. I test drove it and I am getting one. What concerns charging, there are 100-350kW chargers popping up all over Europe now, and the ID3 has shown very good charging characteristics.
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 3 жыл бұрын
I hear two opposing views about infrastructure (you'll find my exchange with a Briton in earlier comments under this video). One group says rapid chargers are popping up everywhere, and it's not problem to drive from one to another. And I agree with the "not a problem to drive from one to another" part. However the other group claims there aren't as many rapid chargers, as one would like to have their mind at ease. And I agree that unless I am always within a 100 km of a fast charger (while on a road trip) I will not feel comfortable travelling long distance in an EV. Even in Poland chargers along the main routes are spread 150-200 km (at best), making it a challenge to plan anything. If this particular charger is out of order, you are pretty much screwed. I had a 100 kW charger (the only one along my route) break down, and I wasted 30 km just to get to it (as it was on the opposite side of a motorway), and the rest of my journey in the Taycan was at a very moderate speed :)

Like all EVs city driving is what this is best for. If you want to travel long distances, you need fast chargers along the way. Taking half an hour break every 250-300 km is a good idea anyway. As for fast and expensive cars, they are not very popular in Poland, and I feel I wouldn't do them justice just street driving them. I'd have to do a proper track review, and that's a bit over my budget :)

The 58 kWh ID.3 requires 20.5 kWh/100 km when driving 130 km/h according to a german yt video. That's enough for 250 km plus 10% rest. For optimal travel speed I wouldn't drive slower as the car is very efficient and charges fast. Even with my 28 kWh Ioniq I drive 120 km/h and more, so 140 km/h might even be the better ID.3 speed when charging at HPCs is possible.

Great review as always. I saw one in the flesh last week. I kind of expected the comparison you did with the Golf. I drove one (golf-e)some months ago and I think that if there is no real range for a long trip (in the ID 3) with a motorway speed (let alone the missing infrastructure e.g here in Greece) I guess the difference in cost between the two cars makes no sense at all. The interior quality is a let down too. Great job mate!
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I talked about this with my colleague last night, and we came to the conclusion that as a rule of thumb realistic range at motorway speed is about 2/3 of WLTP estimate, and 3/4 at 90 km/h. You are likely to achieve the claimed range in the city. With that being said viability of EVs as main/only cars depends on the the infrastructure. This car takes 100 kW, so a quick loo stop, and you've charged for 150-200 km extra.

@@MarekDrives Your points make perfect sense. You reckon that town use with full recuperation could make this car avoid having to charge at all? BR Vangelis
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 3 жыл бұрын
Recuperation helps achieve claimed range, but it's not a perpetuum mobile :) Since city driving gives you most opportunity for recuperation, you get the best range there. The on-board computer takes into account your driving style, so range may change, as you drive. It's the same with ICE cars. I recall driving a Skoda Superb 2.0 TSI 300 km on the dual carriageway, and arriving at my destination with range higher, than what I started with. I just picked the car up, so the on-board computer still remembered how the previous reviewer was driving. And they must have driven it very hard.

@Gkoulidis not really, but whenever I review an EV, I do a bit of planning, and I know where the charging stations are, if I'm going to drive longer distance. If I'm not driving far, and the car has a big battery, I sometimes don't bother charging it throughout the week I spend with it.

You say "you don't get proper recuperation". What happens when you step on the brake? I assume you get recuperation then. I personally prefer coasting without braking and start to recuperate when braking. This should also be more energy efficient since free rolling and recuperating only when necessary will always be better than constantly recuperating. I hope you actually understand how the brake pedal works for the VW electric cars.

What I like about the BMW i3 or the Nissan Leaf is that I can do one-pedal driving in them. I can turn it or off, but I'm in control of it. In city traffic this is a great tool to recoup some energy, and it helps to get the most range. In long distance driving situations this is of course unnecessary, because you want to coast as long as possible. I also understand VW wanted this car to feel as normal as possible, hence the decision to limit lift-off recuperation (apparently there is a radar-based recuperation as well, but it was either broken in this car or I haven't found it in the menu). Having driven a dozen or so EVs I prefer one-pedal driving to regular car behaviour.

I wouldn't say it was bad quality. I'd say it was average, Golf-like. My problem with EVs (living in Poland) is not the range, but price and infrastructure. For the soon-to-be-released ID.3 45 kWh base model I could buy a decent 1.5 Golf, and not have to worry about charging (or updating the software for that matter).

@@MarekDrives well from what I hear you wouldn't have had more luck with software in Golf either. One big problem with ID 3 that you as well as others have mentioned though is very big energy consuption which is very odd for a new generation EV. @timemachine_194 well looks like a rushed job to me in which case it's better to wait a couple of years before buying it new ( kind of like Alfa :-) ). Also I read just today, that they will be fixing software issues but you'll have to visit your dealer - so forget about those promised over-the-air update. All I have to say is that if they are out-Tesla -ing the Tesla you might as well go and buy a Tesla which at least has better charger infrastructure attached to it

If you're trying to save energy and maximise range, why on earth do they only have a black roof? Black absorbs the most heat energy - it's a basic fact of physics. (A real fact not an alternative one!) It makes little difference in winter when the sun is weak, but a big difference in summer. Black is a silly colour for any car on energy grounds, but for an electric one is just plain dumb. Mind you, we won't be getting this in Australia any time soon - a look at the VW websites for Europe vs here is like two different planets.

I never get design decisions of big companies - the main gain from extra space in the iD3 has been put into rear seats, something Golf buyers don't really need, if you're transporting 4 adults regularly you generally get a different type of car. Boot space could have been increased instead which is something useful for everyone, especially as there's no "frunk" or place to store cables.

I love your reviews! Especially your keen and critical eye. But here you missed the mark somewhat. Like you, I've been looking forward to this car pretty much since it was announced. But ID.3 is an utter disappointment!!! Sure it has a quirky and semi-modern design, that some people might either love or hate. But all of the missing and non-working features aside, its riddled with hard, cheap and nasty plastics everywhere, even in the front. Then there's the central console for cup holders between the front seats that's much more at home in the cheapest Dacia than in a premium VW. And if we look at the price, it pretty much is premium, especially considering its size. There's absolutely no reason to take an ID.3 over a Tesla model 3. For a slightly higher price, you get so much more in every aspect - design, features, range, technology, safety, performance, quality of materials and much more. Without trying to offend anyone, only an idiot - or VW enthusiast - would take this over the competition.

I have no experience with Tesla, as it is not officially available in Poland. What seems to have 'softened' my judgement as to interior quality is the Mk8 Golf. Later I've seen my reviews of the Mk7 Golf, and I realised the Mk8/ID.3 interior is not as good. Having said that, I didn't feel it was bad. I focused my disappointment on more pressing matters :) Basically I'd get a KIA e-Soul/e-Niro or Hyundai KONA EV over this any day. With an asterisk that KIA (and probably also Hyundai) guarantee only 60% of battery capacity, while others manufacturers usually guarantee 70%.
@RatimirRS
@RatimirRS 3 жыл бұрын
@@MarekDrives I agree completely with you - Golf mk 8 was a letdown compared to mk 7, but ID.3 was incredibly disappointing. And as you said, even Kia e-Niro is a much better proposition than ID.3. Haven't tried e-Soul or any Hyundai EV's, so I cannot compare those, but Kia and Hyundai being part of the same family, I suspect they'd be about the same. In Denmark, where I live, a top trim ID.3 with its most powerful motor (204 HP) and biggest battery pack (77 kwh) is roughly 400.000 Dkr. (€57-58.000), and there's still the option list, while a long range Tesla model 3 (350 hp, 90 kwh battery pack) is about 465.000 Dkr. (€65-66.500). An MG ZS EV fully loaded costs 250.000 Dkr. (€33.500), and feels so much more premium inside than VW ID.3, although, admittedly, it's doesn't handle nowhere near as well, but for daily driving few people would notice the difference. PS. Thanks for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it. PPS. I hope that you get the chance to drive a Tesla. And if not, you can always come to Denmark for a test drive - it's not too far from Poland - I'll gladly book the car in my name so you can take it for a spin!

You are an experienced motor Journalist, yet you talk as though VW screwed up on the KERS. Has it not occurred to you that VW has put € billions into the development of this car ? Cars with very strong KERS have stability problems in slippery conditions. Also fast deceleration means acceleration is required to get back up to speed, so strong regeneration is not necessarily more efficient. You are not alone, most motor journalists are way too arrogant and would not have a clue if put into an engineering develooment team. It's a shame, really because you otherwise make very good observations and you seem to have more technical knowledge than most motor Journalists. More humility, please, after all you are talking to prospective buyers of these vehicles. Why not, for example talk about the substantial advantages of mounting the motor and drive at the rear over a front wheel drive EV, quieter, better traction, better turning circle, better steering feel, better packaging.
@MarekDrivesENG
@MarekDrivesENG 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, and I do realise I'm talking to prospective buyers. And one thing I can tell them is to stay away from the VW ID cars. VW screwed up with the ID project period. They put billions into the development of a platform they didn't want to develop. And it seems like it was either a rush job, or they put their best ICE experts on it, because they forgot to design a frunk, for example. I noticed strong recuperation can be problematic in tricky road conditions, but it's mainly in much larger and heavier cars. What this car was missing was proper one-pedal driving, which Nissan Leaf or BMW i3 have, and somehow you don't hear about people skidding off into ditches because of it. This was an early car, and the software was less than perfect, so I can't say if the radar-based recuperation was there and/or whether it was working properly. I just got out of a BMW i4, where radar recuperation works perfect, but you can also put the car in B-mode, and then it's pretty much one-pedal driving 80% of the time. And it works.

@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 3 жыл бұрын
If you look at the MQB shot around 0:40, or the side view in 3:12 you'll see this one also has rear drum-like brakes. In fact all have rear drum brakes. According to the press release this is to prevent rust, as rear brakes are rarely used (due to recuperation braking). "...disc brakes with a disc diameter of up to 330 millimetres are fitted at the front, while the rear wheels are equipped with drum brakes. Their great advantage is their robustness: the pads are designed for the service life of the car. And corrosion is not an issue, even though the wheel brakes are used only rarely in everyday driving."
