Volkswagen has revealed its new 321bhp ID.3 GTX, the high performance take on the compact family car we've been waiting for. The numbers are large, but the expectations are larger, as Jordan Katsianis walks us through the key facts about VW's first answer to the electric hot hatchback question.

This is more about just making an ID3 look a bit cooler. 99.9% of people won't care about its handling but as a daily driver it looks much better.

Petrol hot hatches are now 400BHP and weigh 500Kg less. I think this is warm hatch at best. Also can you imagine the negative impact on the already limited range if you drive it spirited!

321hp and 545nm and comparable acceleration to a Fiesta ST with 200hp and 320nm. Either this is badly engineered or weight has THAT much downside. to it.

0-60 mph time seems slow considering the power. A Kia Soul EV with 200bhp can do a 7 second 0-60 using a satellite timer.

That quoted 0-62 time seems super slow; old ID.4 AWD is nearly 0.5s faster with like 50 less HP and 500 more lbs.

Feels like a cash grab to shift the id3 parts bin, vw designers ( if we can really call them that) have dropped the ball for several years, the phasing out of manuals the golfs gti haptic feed back system, the poor interfaces, the lack of basic functions ( illiumination) and the ugly litterally tacked on screens sticking out of the dash that will probs get ripped off by some peoples kids or be a target for crime, they need to go back to the drawing board asap ! But i'll leave my pitch fork in the garage locker untill the gti ev is closer to release.

Can't get the xpower version with the extended range tho, so 144 KW charging vs 175 and "only" 385Km range vs almost 600Km.

Hot hatchback weighing 1.9 tons??? Acceleration dynamics 7.3 seconds??? just like a ten year old Skoda Octavia 1.8??? Maximum speed 180 km/h ??? Is it a little hotter than the Ford Tranzit??? but no, it’s not hotter, since the battery at that speed will be discharged in 15 minutes. A laggy 5-inch thick tablet straight out of 2010??? or is this a green initiative: reusing components straight from the Chinese garbage dump??? The trunk is the size of a glove box??? GPT chatbot that will transfer your personal data to third party companies??? And then it will update and offer you a paid subscription to turn signals??? (just like a BMW) And all this pleasure for some measly 50 thousand euros??? Give me two please, one light green with a rainbow interior for my wife, but for myself I’ll probably take a light brown one with a pink interior since it will have a higher residual value upon resale.
