Hello guys watching you from Europe.. Would be nice if at least the cream rabbit would get a newer jetta diesel motor in it from Co-part or other dismantling junkyards and keep it longer just to be used longer these are still very cool specially the European version looks workable.. We certainle looking forward to next clip with barn Supra !

I sold new Volkswagens from 1979 to 1983. Pre- 1980 all Rabbits were made in Germany. After that all US Rabbits were made in Westmoreland plant in US. C was for Custom Rabbit and L was for Luxury Rabbits which were more "luxurious". All other VW models were still made in Germany. Think the quality of the cars went down in US cars. Most all German gas cars were fuel injected starting in 1977, although I think some cars were carburetor cars in US and cheaper as I recall. There was also a "base" Rabbit below the C which was a 2 door stripped out car. Very bare bones and with carburetor. Diesel only available on C and L models. Hope this helps guys!

Yes the quality went down and the suspension was tuned mushy. My Dad had an 1981 ‘L’ in black with the full wheel covers and a light grey vinyl interior and automatic shoulder belts. It had a 1.7 litre gas and looked pretty classy. More chrome too.

In the early '90's , our Uitenhage plant in South Africa was producing Mks. 1, 2 and 3 at the same time. They're still very popular here as little boy racers, track racers, drag racers and mom taxis. 😊 . 1,3 litre, 1,6 litre, 1,8 litre, 2.0 litre...carb or fuel injection...4 spd or 5 spd manual ...or automatic. 2 door, 4 door and with a boot (Jetta). We had 'em all...😮😅. Our front indicators were closer to the edge of the bumper. Later ones had no quarter vents on front windows.

My very first car I bought was a 1975 Volkswagen Rabbit (gas) in 1979. It was orange outside with a plaid, yes I said plaid, interior. I wish the past owner was still alive to see the transformation you did in this video. Hopefully ALL the Rabbits are saved, restored and driven again by owners who love them still as much as I still do. If the engine in it could be rebuilt I'd do it. Otherwise a stock engine. My ultimate wish is to restore all the Rabbit's to factory like condition and drive them every once in awhile. Can you tell I LOVE Volkswagens?

That Rabbit is looking great, just in time for Easter! I learned to drive in a 1979 VW Diesel, with a clutch that had “seen better days” and I have a super soft melty place in my heart for them. That engine was rated at 52hp and required a heavy foot just to get it out of its own way, but there are videos on KZfaq of people swapping 1.9 TDIs into MKI Caddy’s (the pickup version of the Rabbit). That would definitely give it more pep in its step… but it would be a major project. Good luck with the Rabbits I can’t wait to see more!

O and keep the same engine... this is a Classic... no need to zoop it up!

We had a Rabbit diesel. It was a great almost trouble free car for 200K miles. It also got almost 50 mpg almost everywhere we went. It was a good highway car, comfortable and rode and drove very well. The only drawback was the motor could have been a little more powerful. On the highway going up very steep grades had to go to third gear. Loved that little car. Paint and interior stayed very good the whole time.

2:51 He's right! I thought the same thing, I have a 94' Golf mk3 with the 3 doors and those early golfs, the mk1,2 and 3 were just too tiny to come with 4 doors, it just looked odd. Thus, the 3 door versions were more preferable and were even structurally stronger. It also gave them a much sportier look! Great video guys, I love these cars, hoping to buy a mk2 or mk1 one day!

In Brazil, this engine is the famous Ap engine (EA 827), also equipped in Ford vehicles through a transfusion between VW and Ford in the 90s (1989 to 1997), here this engine was produced until 2012 in the VW Gol, Parati and Saveiro , using flex fuel (gasoline and ethanol generating 107 hp) and diesel until 1991

So cool! Our family has a history of driving diesel VWs. My dad had one like this I believe in college or something. I daily drive a ‘97 Passat TDI 5 speed. I’m the 2nd owner. Only like 63,000 miles on it, tan leather interior with a black dash. One of my dream cars. I get average 48 mpg in the summer, around 40 mpg in the winter. Most I got was 53.1mpg on a trip! They are awesome cars to own and a fun to drive. Plenty of modern features too.

If I had to swap an engine into that car it would probably be either a VW 1.9TD or a 1.9TDI as the N/A engines are gutless, I love the simplicity of the old VW diesels as they are great and fun for learning how to fix and maintain cars. My firs car is a 1990 Golf MK2 CL Diesel and when the original engine got worn out, my stepbrother put a 1.9TD AAZ engine in it and it runs great, you get really far on one tank of diesel. the car has now somewhere above 540 000 kilometers on the odometer, I learnt how to wrench on cars from it but sadly now the rust has become a big problem. when winter ends i will work on it again!
