V5 engines are a rare anomaly in the automotive world. Honda used a 1.0L V5 engine in motorcycles, with great success, though the setup hasn't been seen in many production cars. VW produced a V5, or more accurately a VR5, for its packaging and power benefits versus a larger VR6, or a smaller inline four cylinder.
The VR5 engine style, though only requiring two camshafts (SOHC, 2 valves per cylinder, or DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder), has its complications. The intake and exhaust paths are shorter for two of the cylinders, the crankshaft geometry is offset from the cylinder center lines, and ultimately it's not much more powerful than an inline four cylinder. Check out the video for full details about how the engine works.

As an automotive Engineer, I have written journals and published papers on SAE's (society of automotive engineering) and I must say, want to learn something, learn from him, he explains well and easy to understand. Great for students in the Universities who are in the Engineering department

Engineering Explained to be honest, unless you ask a university lecturer to download it for you, I don't see any other legal way for you to obtain them. I have written about the efficiency and the effects of a SI engine of a higher pressure in fuel pressure regulator. Just setting an extra of 50kpa to your fuel pressure regulator, would cause a 2.0% increase of hp, 1.3% of torque but 30°C more in temperature of the mouth of the exhaust manifold. It was an utter failure for that paper but I found ways how not to meddle any manufacturing specs in a vehicle (dry humor) anyways, thanks for replying mate. Hope you have a wonderful week ahead of you. Cheerio!!

I owned a 2000 year VW Bora with the V5 engine years ago - Cracking exhaust sound, smooth running (thanks to all the counter balancing act going on inside) but only really made sense at 80+ mph speeds where constant high speed could be easily matintained and MPG actually improved into the low 30's! That said, it had woeful economy around town though, I once read a comment on this particular engine - 'Performance of a 4 cylinder with the economy of a 6 cylinder'......very true!

With the cylinder on a 15 degree angle and a flat head, the pistons are offset. Presumably compression is not that good with 1/2 the cylinder 15 degrees off of TDC
@bobhope4288
@bobhope4288 6 жыл бұрын
tarstarkusz, I believe the top of the pistons are slanted, so the piston and the top of the combustion chamber are parallel with each other and there is no dead space. So the compression ratio is on par other engines.

Those are also VVR12 engines. Think of it as two VR6 engines welded together in the shape of a V. They were getting published as W engines what technically speaking was totally wrong. The only "real" W engine i know that has been put into a street car was the W16 in the Bugatti eb18/3 Chiron (i think Tatra also made w12 engine but i'm not sure).

That's just not true. The areas where NA engines are preferable shrink every day. For any kind of performance application, skipping out on boost is just leaving power on the table. NA survives on it's lower cost, and simplicity. Not on it's performance and efficiency superiority. Even the Civic Type-R, in it's pure pursuit of lightweight, simplicity and performance, has finally conceded to the turbo's capability. Now if it's about the sound the perfectly linear throttle response, the experience of enjoying the NA itself, have your fun. But it is strictly inferior on every front except simplicity. Even then engines with complicated geometry and balancing issues like the VR6/5 lose out to turbos in simplicity as well, which is why VW has abandoned them.

I agree. Just spend your efforts on building the most capable 4cyl engine you can (in terms of block, heat dissipation, internal strength, harshness), and change induction to vary the power output throughout the model range. You could even bore/stroke it for a performance line as well. It didn't make sense that they built 15 different types of engine around the same "v" concept, when they really just needed compact power.

Cool video, cool engine. It has a great exhaust note. Would like to hear more about how the offset cylinder centers mean that one bank of cylinders act on the crank differently than the other and what that means to torque and power. What I mean is one bank of pistons is moving in the same direction as the bottom of the connecting rod during the power stroke where as the other bank would have the connecting rod swinging to the side during the power stroke.

Maintenance and repairs are equivalent to the VR6's, generally a timing chain is € 1500 (parts & labor) and you pay the same for a dual mass flywheel and clutch, for the rest it uses the VR6 externals (waterpump, pulley's, oil filter, -housing and cooler)

johnnyr25 basically everything fits from a vr6 so pretty much the same, minus one spark plug ofc. Have a seat toledo vr5, engine is a reliable piece, in 5 years of ownership had to change oil pressure sensor, maf sensor and a throttle body. Not bad for a 400k km car. It sounds really well, power output is not that good, it likes to chug fuel too. Oh and main issue that i had with it was the freaking oil sump, damn it sits low. Still puts a smile on my face whenever it gets to rev. And believe me, it gets to rev often.

That's why the vr6 has such awesome low end torque!

I currently have a car with this engine - the 20v version - a Seat Toledo V5. Fantastic - sounds great, smooth, revvy and yet makes power from 1000 to 6000 rpm in a very linear fashion. On the minus side it likes a drink. Being an engineer, I bought it for its uniqueness, its weirdness and the fact that the idea of the narrow v was originally used by Lancia. The design feature where the centreline of the cylinders is offset from the centreline of the crank is known as desaxe. A pity this engine and the DSG gearbox were not available concurrently.

Only last year I sold by beloved SEAT Toledo V5. Tuned to 190 bhp with a miltek exhaust it was amazing. Sounded great went great and really high spec. Massively regret selling it. I loved the lazy, (as in not frantic like the turbo in my SEAT Ibiza Cupra) progress, predicable power. Fast too.

Vibration.. Do you have a video on engine counter weights (balance) and the means manufacturers use to reduce vibration. When ever I imagine firing orders I keep envisioning all this engine movement.

Yes indeed, several videos on the subject. Here's the start: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l9WeldqA3dXTd3U.html From there, you can search for primary balance, secondary balance, and balancing shafts for additional videos on how engines are balanced.

I can just imagine the engineers getting so frustrated with design constraints that they floated this idea just out of frustration and then got the go-ahead.

Great explanation/overview. I wonder about balancing port lengths and heat dissipation. With that firing order and exhaust porting heat build up between 1 and 3 would seem to be an issue. It's an interesting approach to have a smaller engine than the VR6 with the HP similar to Honda's B18B1 and B18C1 I4s. I am curious about how much more smooth the VR5 is in comparison. More typical 5 cylinder engines would have a crankshaft that resembles a flower. This makes for a very balanced crankshaft in rotation and most of the vibration being end to end.

Port length balancing isn't really a problem - the runners with short length in the head just need more length outside of the head before joining the intake plenum or exhaust collector.

Excellent video never heard of a 3-2 V6 on another subject I'm wondering if you know anything about the Axel's on the Humvees I saw a video on off the ranch on KZfaq where they axles do not go directly into the center of the wheel but go into a gear that's raised up to give it a few more inches of ground clearance sounds like an engineering nightmare and maintenance problem down the line

I didn't know that the bores were offset from the crank. The bore spacing is very wide compared to typical inline and vee engines to help the interference between the bores of each bank, but apparently that wasn't enough for this extremely narrow vee angle without an excessive rod length.

Intake starts on side where there are 2 cylinders if somebody will ever ask. I have vr5 150hp seat toledo from '99 and its fun car to drive. In my car I made 25/28 miles per gallon (10l per 100km) and sometimes when you try you get 31mpg. But sound and feeling of this engine gives much fun. When you rev it to around 3000rpm engine is really balanced. Engine bay it's quite roomy when you put cone shaped air filter instead of giant oem filter and it's box. Engine is really simple build and you can do lots of stuff by yourself if you know anything about any engines. I will never sold this car, engine is and forever be so unique that you will probably never know person who have vr5. It's crazy design but not boring like others budget cars (mine cost me something around 600$ and okey its has some rust, but is healthy engine).

Jokes aside, the VR engines, both the 5 and 6, are among the best engines ever designed in my opinion. I assume people with vibration issues must have worn out engine mounts, because the last VR5 I was in was as smooth as warm butter. The fact you can cram that much power into roughly the same size engine as a regular inline 4 amazes me, not the fact that VW did it, but the fact nobody else thought to make it a mainstream engine before then. (I know all about the inspiration for the VR6, the VR4, but that was hardly a bestseller.)

We can associate the offset with the improvement of the bore and stroke forces produced by the cumbustion? I thought that offset provide a straght line on this two components, increasing the efficiency. But at the cost of more vibration.

So did VW use offset crank pins with 72 degrees separation to obtain even firing impulses? Also, it seems the varied intake/exhaust ports could be tuned to broaden the torque curve and power band.

Jason. Excellent video. The VR nomenclature in German is for Verkürzt Reihen or loosely translated as Shortened In-Line in English. It's a true In-Line 5 even firing 5-pin crank-throw crankshaft with a staggered 15°V cylinder bores head. Btw, from the diagram, the 15° dimension should be from cyl. ℄ to ℄ (the dotted lines). You mentioned the Honda V5 motorcycle engine. They're both 5-cyl. however, the Honda engine is a true V5 engine with the 3-pin crank-throw crankshaft, 75.5°V-block, and 2 cyl. heads, 2 everything....etc. The cyl. 1 & 2 ride on crankpin no.1, the cyl. 3 ride on crankpin no.2, and the cyl. 4 & 5 ride on crankpin no.3. The brilliant, and marvel design of VW's VR engine architecture are: 2 VR6 = W12 - Audi A8L W12 & VW Phaeton W12 VR6 -1 cyl. = The VR5 above 2 VR5 = VR10 - In 3D CAD only? VR6 - 2 cyl. = VR4 x 2 = W8 - Passat W8 2 W8 = W16 - Bugatti

Hi, love your videos I have a question, I just bought a 2.5L V5 VW passat 2014 that done 88000 KM, the first every thing is perfect, the second week I start hearing some metal noises while the 6 speed automatic is shifting, and after a long drive (1 hour or so) or driving using sport mode for a short period, the metal noise increases and I start hearing some ticking noise increases with rpm sometimes the ticking noise goes when I turn on the air conditioning, this car isn't popular in my county and it's out of warranty, I hope you can help, note that the car acceleration or temperature is perfect
