The Tiguan eHybrid has been a long time in coming. Volkswagen was talking about a PHEV plug-in version of its mid-sized SUV even before the current second generation Tiguan was first launched in 2016 and showed a Tiguan GTE prototype to gauge public reaction. This concept car had a clever roof-mounted solar module that potentially could add around 300 further miles to the all-electric range figure - which we were eager to see. Sadly, that technology hasn't (yet) made it through to production. And probably wouldn't be much use in drizzly Blighty anyway.
What we do have though in this finished Tiguan eHybrid model is plenty of cutting-edge technology, even though the powertrain used here isn't that much different from the one first introduced in a Golf GTE back in 2014. Can it propel this PHEV crossover to the top of the class? Let's see.

Ordered one towards the tail end of last year, had the confirmation for the elegance trim plus extras given for 22nd of December 2022… now we wait 😅😂

Nearly placed an order but with the Life eHybrid being withdrawn and all the expected delays I had to cancel it. Here in the UK we are subject to a "luxury" tax with increased VED if the list price exceeds £40,000 from when the vehicle is ordered to when it is delivered and registered. With around three VW price rises annually the risk of being subject to an extra £355 (plus inflation increases) every year for the next five years (plus the basic VED) made it unviable.

Excellent review. I find it to be just the right combination between detail and brevity. I am watching from Canada and we do not get the PHEV here as the snow necessitates all wheel drive. We also only get the AllSpace long wheel base version. That said, we just purchased a 2023 R-Line. Thank you again for a very informative presentation.

Same here, it’s now moved to 03/2023 but if I’m honest I don’t believe it’ll ever come.. at some point they will cancel my order. 😢

I ordered one in 10/2021 and still not even got a build date, already got a car that I’m happy with so just waiting it out but I am definitely expecting a cancellation right now 😅

I bought one its actually better than a seat or volvo XC90 Because the small screens on the volvo is disappointing 😞

Great review - really appreciate your no gimmick/straight forward/relevant content 👍 I’m looking at getting this in the R Line spec Can you tell me how does this compare to the other Mid SUV PHEV I’m interested in: the Volvo XC40 in similar spec? Thanks in advance

Thank you! Not much to choose between them Volvo a little more premium and has better media systems. Volkswagen slightly more spacious - much bigger boot and advantage of sliding rear bench.

Yes their first hybrid VW Jetta 2013. I own one. I also prefer the self-charging models. I feel honored to own here in Sweden, only 31 registered in the whole country and I am one of them - beat that 😅

@@freedom2036 - the car is supplied with a cable to plug into a domestic 13A socket. It's only about 6m long though. The bigger problem will be getting your hands on the car: the Life eHybrid is no longer available to order and since the model was launched last August there appear to have been no 'new customer orders' delivered. Current waiting time is probably over 12 months.

@@trims23 depending on options or pakkets the w8time is wel over 12 months atm we are waiting since 10 march 2021 delivery will be after august 2022 no date yet. We ordered the e hybrid platinum full option

Hi. How long before the battery needs replacing? I’m getting old now so this will probably be my last car so I don’t want to be replacing a battery that will be very expensive! And can you drive in hybrid all the time so it’s doesn’t deplete the battery? My longest driving will probably be no more than 120 miles there and back. Thank you in anticipation.

If don't plan to park the car in your garage and plug it in for charging every night then Plug-in hybrid or electric cars are not for you. Then you should get a regular hybrid, mild hybrid or petrol car. Without charging these cars always run in hybrid mode with depleted battery. If you drive only up to 120 miles, can charge at home and want to feel a modern grandpa then your ideal car would be an electric car with the 240 miles range. Electric are less complex and more reliable cars than hybrid. Actually you can drive the electric cars 20 years until rust holes appears without changing the battery but the problem is that they loose capacity. Manufacturers are guaranteeing that in 8 years you shouldn't loose more than 30% of capacity. But in 16 years you might only have half the range. If that is OK for you, you might not change the battery a drive further until rust eats your car. But you have to take in consideration that hybrid and electric cars are expensive to fix. If you are very unlucky, a repair bill might give you a heart attack 😂
