Volkswagen up! is in production since late 2011. VW claims it sold some 660 thousand units since then, and that up! is the most popular A-segment car in Europe. This is a bit of an exaggeration. According to my calculations this figure includes total sales for up!, Citigo and Mii, but up! on its own was usually in the top three behind Fiats 500 and Panda. And if you ask me to choose between a Panda, and an up!, I’ll take VW any day.
When I attended the Polish launch event for the up! back in 2012, I didn’t expect it to be particularly interesting. Just another shopping trolley. What could Volkswagen do to top lukewarm Toyota Aygo, Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107? As it turned out the up! may be small outside, but it is very roomy inside, with a big boot, interesting options for personalising, relatively smooth engine. So what can they improve now?

Iv just bought one of these and i LOVE it best car iv had, got 65.4mpg on motorway and driving it 5.5hours it used 1/4 tank!! Best thing iv ever bought! 😍😍😍

Do you have any idea when changing gear, letting the clutch out, there is a “thunk” sound? It does it in all gears, there is no clutch slip/drag. The car drives fine apart from the noise. Any ideas?

I really like the facelift. It makes the car look more dynamic and less like a box with wheels attached. The new engine seems to suit the up!, but I would rather go for the e-up! Going electric means lower running costs, no maintanance, quieter and smoother drive. Plus not having to shift gears is in my opinion a very good feature in a car aimed primarily at city driving. Given the relatively high price of the up! with the TSI engine, I would save up a bit extra and maybe go for a second-hand e-up! with a few thousand kilometers on the clock.

As much as I like the e-Golf, e-up! is crap. Uncomfortable, sluggish, short range, expensive.

Marek Drives I tried it out on a short test-drive and I thought it was all right for the city. I agree, that the price is high, but at least there is a lot of standard equipment and you can get them for significantly less when buying second-hand.

I bet many people will re-chip this engine to create a 120 bhp Up! If this engine comes to the Mii that would be an even nicer base for tuning, cheaper and with a slightly lowered suspension by default.

The big set-back in using yr phone, the battery life drains very fast on maps. I notice it doesnt charge from the cars fitting ?

TSI has direct injection vs. MPI, which doesn't.

I've sat in the previous sub-10.000euro base model Up at a dealer once. It has no power steering, no car radio, no preparation for a car radio, and I'm not sure but probably no remote / central locking either. No one buys it, that car only exists to make the Up appear in search results based on price.

Where do you live? Audio comes standard in most of Europe. Remote central locking and power steering too.

+ast5515 The Netherlands. Talking about the first model Up! here. The dealer I visited had the bare white no-audio no-powersteering Up! as an offer because no one was willing to buy it.

I don't know what it's like in the Netherlands, but probably similar due to EU regulations. In Poland in order to advertise a starting price of X999 the importer has have a certain amount of such cars on stock. These are the cars nobody in their right mind will buy, but they have to push them out some poor souls.

+João Vieira around 5 with mountains and motorways, but it was a short trip. Maybe 150 km.

good review and a nice torque engine to go with it. shame its stupid money for a city cr. obviously aimed at the 20 somethings that don't understand monetary value. hell its in the price range of a Dacia Duster and I know what I would rather go for

Yes it's aimed at a more fashion conscious market. But it's a city car and it does that job better than a Duster. The Duster has more space but if you don't want more space then what's the point in having it?
