I like the simple cue, "Keep active shoulder behind the other shoulder." "Turn sideways to the ball." Easy to train that. Thank you.

Showing your student getting jammed with his right shoulder in front of the left is super helpful.

This is great . I feel like this is how I naturally want to volley but been trying to hit more out in front because of cliche KZfaq advice. This makes more sense to me and seems more comfortable and balanced.

I've watched a lot of different videos on volleys. None of them have spoken about the shoulder position as well as you have in this video.

Tom is evidently #1 in the world mimicking the mistakes of his students. Thus he makes the mistakes so obvious that the right way is just set firmly into your mind (hope my Emglish makes sense). Perfect tips!!! ))

Could you make a similar video on service return and how it compares to volleys please? On fast returns the body and the short swing should behave in a similar way, but what about the shoulders in particular? I never thought about them, this is the first video I see talking about it, great job!

Thank you Coach for your advice my friend. I will try this technique and let you know how I do. I will post my results on my channel. I have been having people hitting the ball right at me and I just use their pace against them. Thank you Coach.

I’ve always felt that hitting volleys further out front reduced my tendency to swing at the ball and kept my arms from getting jammed into my body. Perhaps the better solution is improved footwork. But isn’t it always.
@watcher687
@watcher687 2 ай бұрын
So hit by your side not really out in front that much. Like what should happen on slice backhand and forehand to prevent floaters. Also straightening the arm too early is not a good idea, just like the bh slice again. Thanks, Tom.👍

Thanks for this lesson...regarding grip pressure for normal volleys, do you stay relaxed then firm up before contact and if so to what number like from a 4 to an 8 at contact? Thanks!

When he gets jammed as opposed to when you avoid getting jammed, you can see that his right foot is not going behind and to the left of his left foot, which would keep his right shoulder back automatically. I see this so much, even with high level players, it's a footwork pattern issue.
@TomAllsopp
@TomAllsopp 2 ай бұрын
As I kept saying in the video, the feet do this because of what the upper body is doing. Not the other way around.

@@TomAllsopp Why do you say this? From my experience, the first thing that happens at net is the split step...and everything that follows is a direct result of that split step. In short, you split, you recognize that the ball is going to jam you, your feet (brain) get the rest of you out of the way so you don't get jammed. What am I missing?
