In this tennis lesson, I teach my student Shamir (4.5 NTRP Player) how to improve his volley. The technical deficiencies on his volleys are very common across all recreational levels. With the corrections that we made he was able to control his volleys a lot better and experienced more power as well.

One of the hard parts about learning technique in tennis is you hear so many different tips that often conflict with each other. Shamir mentioned that he was doing a stomp to end his volleys before you told him "Contact-1-2", and I was told about the stomp as well. I'm learning a lot from this channel. lol

I imagined a wall in front of the racquet today when volleying and tightened the grip handle as I struck the ball. WOW!!!! What a huge difference it made. The tightening of the grip as I hit the ball actually helped freeze the racquet and with the control. ..... I applied the same tightening of the grip when doing high volleys and overheads and my percentage went up 80 percent. Then I used the tightening of the grip idea with my backhand slices and approach shots and improved my consistency by 90 percent. Thanks Niko!!

I am an old coach and teaching professional so I really appreciate this video. Excellent teaching and the student has very good footwork. Near the end of the lesson the importance of continuing to move forward instruction is so important. The top volley players always move forward. When I coached High School Tennis my players that played Hockey and Basketball did this naturally. In both of those sports players are conditioned to move to the net or goal and keep going. I liked to use a three ball drill with players taking first ball at service line and moving forward for second and third ball then touch the net after third ball. When I was developing as a tournament player John McEnroe was The touring pro that I would watch for volley tactics. I do love Nadal’s fast feet and court coverage. I would tell my players that you cannot hit a shot if you don’t get to it.

Great explanation on volley technique. Since it wasn't discussed, I assume footwork (other than moving in and through a volley) is not so important. Now I understand why my warm up volleys seem so good and fall apart in game action. Videos are so good, not sure I'll need any more personal lessons. Thanks.

Fun fact, a big-hitting player to who I had lost to 60, 61 about 2 years ago trying to stay back and rally, I recently defeated 61, 60 by serve/volleying and attacking the net when possible on his serve. I simplified my volley to be a love tap instead of trying to smash it in for winners. Hitting it shallow and forcing my opponent to rush the net or tap it just hard enough to keep it in the lines, but in difficult angles my opponent can't reach.

Sincere question regarding rating of player. Isn't a 4.5 player, especially in FL where you are, supposed to have better volley technique? I realize that the whole rating process is a tool to help define something we might not be able to capture.

Nick can you please explain the difference between this forehand volley technique with wrist extension and the racket finishes with the buttcap pointing to the left for a righty and the other such as racketflex's video where they don't talk much about wrist extension and they talk about shoulder adduction where the buttcap finishes pointing down at the midline of the body. I'm confused on what is right and especially have trouble when putting away volleys as I see some swing through it with a weird finish and then others try to contact one-two it.
@IntuitiveTennis
@IntuitiveTennis 4 жыл бұрын
You have to freeze the racquet at contact. At times the momentum will carry the racquet across the body, but the freeze is still there. The cleaner you execute the freeze the better. It’s a deflection. No shoulders, keep your body as still as possible.
