In case you didn't know , that's Mr. Tanaka Kazunari's (Coach Ukai's voice actor)last lines in Haikyuu.Sadly he passed away last 2016 .It was already an incredible line,but finding out that it was the last episode he voiced Coach Ukai on really made it have even more impact.

Coach, this is a sad note but one that you should know: Episode 8 is the final episode with Coach Ukai's first voice actor, Kazunari Tanaka. Not long after recording his lines for this episode, he passed away from a brain hemorrhage, aged 49. From this point on, Ukai will be voiced by another voice actor, Hisao Egawa. He's a pretty faithful replacement, especially as time goes on he sounds more and more comfortable in his role, but it's hard to replace the original one. RIP. At least he went out like an absolute boss. The last line spoken in the show by his original voice actor is the absolutely iconic "DON'T YOU DARE LOOK DOWN! VOLLEYBALL IS A SPORT WHERE YOU'RE ALWAYS LOOKING UP!". Couldn't think of a better way to go out.

Spoilers, I guess: I think you can really notice it in one of the big rallies against Inarizaki, where he's telling the team to slow down and recompose themselves, apart from that tho, he is pretty good and if I didn't know the truth I would just think the VA was sick or something.

Coach Washijo backstory makes me sad, he clearly had the work ethic and the skills but he lacked in height in an era where the libero position didn't even existed

yep, especially how it mirrored Hinata, except of how they decided to do with their short height at the end of the day: coach Washijo wanted to be like Ushijima, "with a simple strength that can make everyone surrender", while Hinata paired with both his athleticism and Kageyama, was able to fit in the court in spite of his stature. I think this was what made Washijo most compelling.

Whatever his backstory I wish he would stop pushing his insecurity/bitterness on teenagers. It's been decades and the man has had absolutely no self reflection or growth, remaining petty. He's an interesting character but if there was one character I just disliked it would be him.

"Volleyball is the sport where you're always looking up." - is the last quotation you will hear from Coach Ukai. Tanaka Kazunari is the first voice actor of Coach Keishin Ukai (until season 3 episode 8) died last 0ct 10, 2016 (which is death anniversary tomorrow) So the next episode, which is Episode 9, it will be different voice actor.

coach, you might have missed a little of the shiratorizawa coach backstory: the point is that he is short, like hinata, and wanted to spike, like hinata. he worked hard, and he wanted it very badly, but _his_ coach at the time told him that he was just too short, period, full stop. if he wanted to play, he would have to grow -- and thus, that marked the end of his dreams. at first, the shiratorizawa coach was bitter, saying, "what makes them better than me _just because_ they're tall?" but then he saw one of his taller teammates talented and working hard, and cut that bitterness right off, reminding himself -- none of those players are there only because they're tall. they hustle too, they put in the effort too, they're talented too. we see him looking over at hinata when a taller, stronger player (like ushijima) makes an impact on the court. the show is definitely trying to parallel hinata and the shiratorizawa coach -- both small players who took a completely different approach to being small. for hinata, he wants to play anyway -- his jump gives him wings, he'll be faster, he'll adapt. for the shiratorizawa coach, he wanted "a simple strength" to power over his opponents that he did not have and could not have, and so he took to coaching players that had it in his place. this will come up a little more later, so i hope this helps! 😊

But when I'm serving, I am free." -Semi Eita I absolutely love Semi’s character and this quote in particular He doesn’t have as much screentime as I’d like but the time he’s on makes me so happy because I relate so well to this hunger for more. Semi wants to show off his abilities and and take high risks for high rewards, whereas Shirabu wants to stay in the background and give everything for the ace Coach Washijo leans more towards Shirabu’s style for the team culture, so he’s the starting setter Honestly love both of them, in fact setters are probably just my favorite in general But Semi takes his opportunities just like Suga and i think that’s what got me so involved with him lol (anyways, short rant - that i could go even longer with - over)

the serve specialist for shiratorizawa was actually their main setter, he's a third year student. He got benched for shirabu who's a second year student. what they are suggesting is that Semi, the white haired guy, is actually a more skilled setter than shirabu, but since Shirabu is more reliable and is more in line with the team's concept he gets the spot over Semi. In his internal monologue Semi recognises what the team needs, but he feels like he can't control the fact that he wants to prove to be a good setter by fooling the blocks by himself, while Shirabu doesn't really care most of the time and will set Ushijima even with a triple block because he can spike over it.

The thing is Washijou's making a terrible mistake there. I mean a good setter and a good hitter are better than a good hitter only right?? And Ushijima CAN work with setters like that just fine and then some, we see it in the future.

@@meloni6280 i think it was more about how shirabu has a more steady and consistent set compared to semi. As much as semi probably is more skillful in terms of deception or making his own plays, having a more consistent set for a team comprising of solid hitters would benefit the team more than a shaky deceptive set. Like the moment right before ushijima got blocked by tsukki, the set wasnt that good and resulted in a block. Coach washijou probably doesnt want that. Just my opinion.

@@meloni6280 In theory yes, but Ushijima's talent is so overwhelming that their entire gameplay strategy is centered on getting him the ball reliably, a playstyle which Shirabu not just meshes well with but specifically joined the team to be a part of. Semi on the other hand admits he has a bit more of an ego and would want to be more of a conductor in the offense, so he doesn't work as well with the team strategy even if he might be overall a better player than Shirabu.

Not only did Goshiki (Shiratorizawa 8) mess up 2 passes, he was also the one that net touched on the attack before, and previously started a set on a really bad serve error. I never realized until Coach mentioned it, how great of a captain Ushijima is.

12:55 he's like that because Hinata probably decided to approach for a minus tempo quick on the first touch for Karasuno without even telling him. So Kageyama had to keep up and try to set him right after serving. It's probably not realistic how Kageyama can keep up with Hinata without any communication or planning beforehand but yeah, that's one of the reasons Kageyama thinks Hinata is the most troublesome hitter, he just does what he wants and Kageyama has to deal with that.

If i remember it correctly it was because tendou was there. Fortunately the ball came back to the karasuno's court so shiratorizawa needs to switch from offense to defense so tendou wasnt able to keep up with that quick. Sorry if my english is bad.

Oh btw Coach, the reason that 1st year on Shiratorizawa always eggs on Ushiwaka is because he wants to be the future ace of the team but Ushiwaka is the undisputed ace right now, so he is very competitive with Ushiwaka about that in a friendly team rivalry type of way.

13:25 - Semi, the 3rd-year, is the best setter in Shiratorizawa. Yet, he is only used as a serving specialist and Shirabu is the official team setter. The current Shiratorizawa game plan is to “serve the ace”: get max number of relatively easy-to-hit balls to the main hitter, Ushijima. While Semi refuses to stick to this paradigm and wants to set in more varied and interesting ways, Shirabu has no problem just setting the same high sets to Ushijima time and time again. That’s why Shirabu is a starter, while Semi is warming the bench.

A point you may have missed: The Shiratorizawa Coach, Washijo-Sensei, played during an era of volleyball before the advent of the Libero. He couldn't be a part of the game because the role for which he was perfect for didn't exist. He had to give up his dreams and adopted a new philosophy: "A Simple Strength That Can Make Anything Surrender," which is only achieved through height.

I mean... I've watched this anime a gazillion times, but the best moments always gets me it's so weird. I personally love 2 moments of this episode: when Ushiwaka told Tsutomu that he had no reason to panic and when coach Ukai said his encouraging words. Coach Ukai's words are actually the most iconic out of all of Haikyu's lines (at least imo). It's an opening line to the OST album!

After Tsukki's block, I think this was the episode a lot of us were waiting for you to see. Other people have probably already told you, but Coach Ukai's rallying cry before Tsukki returns was his original VA's last lines in the show. He passed away shortly after the season began airing (about a month and a half before this episode aired), leaving the show and its fans with Ukai's probably most memorable line. As you get into 9 and 10, Ukai may sound a bit different, although his second VA has intentionally tried his best to sound like his former actor. Glad that you finally got to experience this one with us Coach!

"messing with us with numbers" I think what the shiratorizawa coach meant is that karasuno keeps doing the synchronized attack. Thus confusing the blockers and defenders because they can't tell who's gonna hit. Which puts them under pressure und keeps being troublesome

Omg I love how Tsukki is coming back. It's like a superhero entrance. Tsukki is like he's ready to go back and continue to play. I always get chills seeing Tsukki. Favorite character!!

Rewatching the scene where Kazunari Tanaka-san makes me feel sad. Those last line always hits me home.

The last 5 minutes or so of this episode might be one of the greatest moments of this series for me. Between Shiratorizawa's coach having his flashback, the long rally, the absolute desperation of Karasuno getting forcefully shut down by Ushiwaka, the chant of "One More Point," the original Coach Ukai's last lines, and Tsuki charging out of the tunnel there are just so many emotional highs and lows that turn this into a masterpiece. Sometimes I go back and rewatch just this scene just because of how intense it is.

Got teary eyed again hearing Coach Ukai’s words, which happens to be his original voice actor’s last line at Haikyuu. RIP Tanaka Kazunari 🙏😢 it’s like he knew that was gonna be his last line. He really gave his best in that, his most emotional/expressive line 👏

Good day, Coach! The Serve Specialist of Shiratorizawa was Semi Eita, he is a third year and the main setter of Shiratorizawa but was replaced with the younger second year setter which is Shirabu. He feels a little bit inferior to Shirabu that’s why he said: “But with serves, I am free.”

there is also the whole thing where he is seen by basically everyone as the more tecnically talented player, but because he is always trying to prove he is strong/show off, he is benched for the more reliable and consistent setter in Shirabu

The Haikyuu soundtrack is unbelievable good, and I can say that with like 200 different anime I watched. Cool that you realise and mentioned even that aspect. Even tho people saying season 4 animation is worse, the music stays good! As always nice reaction!

I love the senior setter in this match...he is a serving specialist as a senior simply because he couldn't fall in line with the coach...he couldn't play the game simply he had to be flashy...on pretty much any other team he would be a star but on this team he simply gets in the way of their simplicity...it's awesome seeing the difference in coaching style and to me shows that even great coaches have a hard time dealing with certain types of players

To think that at the start of the ep, Ukai was struggling to find words to cheer up the team, and then at the very final, he doesn't just find the best words, but it happens to be his last words too. Great voice actor, who will never be forgotten Kazunari Tanaka.

I have to admit that I had no intention on watching this series again from season 1-4, but I've stuck with coach from the first video and I continue to do so every week because of his great commentary on animation, coaching, and volleyball. Shirabu, Shiratorizawa's main setter, is a 2nd year while Semi, the silver haired pinch server, is a third year backup just like Suga and the students in the stands are wondering why the latter isn't a starter. Semi thinks to himself that the reason he isn't a starter is because he wants to stand out too much and show off how good he is. Shirabu on the other hand, is much more content to sit in the shadows and play the support role quietly, as evidenced a few episodes ago when he said "I will be the setter who stands out the least", which is what his team needs.

12:55 so kageyama is mad at hinata because if we remember back in s2, coach ukai says "the spiker is the one in control of the attack." It means that it wasn't fully kageyama's choice to do a first touch set into spike but that he probably responded to hinata already running in for the spike immediately after the opponent's pass. As if hinata was saying "either you follow me into this attack or you have one less hitter for the next attack."

Saw a tik tok awhile back saying that Tendo’s eyes are like cat eyes, cats slowly close their eyes around those that they trust, which is why Tendo is always very wide eyed except when he’s around Ushijima, and I think that’s adorable. Love the videos!

You should check out Run With the Wind (whether to react to or enjoy personally). It's a running anime with a similar vibe to Haikyuu so I think you would enjoy it.

Moments like that with Goshiki, I remember that Ushijima IS the team captain (I tend to forget, believe it or not). He is not a team cheerer like Daichi, but he is effective.

Coach, what the Shiratorizawa coach meant by "messing with numbers" was that Karasuno is using multiples hitters to distract Shiratorizawa blockers to commit on one only.
