"Kiyoko could have handled herself" While competent and sometimes (rarely) assertive with the boys I don't think that is what was going to happen there. She is generally a shy and introverted person throughout the show as seen by the banner scene in season 1 and season 2's remarks by Ryuji about how she is "talking" and how Yachi being there has effected her. Look at his posture and her posture. He is showing confidence and aggression while she is hunched over and looking away, a sign of stress, fear, and submission. I think Kiyoko would be capable of putting him in his place if she used what she has, but I don't think she was going to handle it herself in that situation.

Also, it was two much taller guys sort of surrounding/cornering her. Its a very stressful situation for her to be in. As someone that relates to her personality, I'd be feeling very on edge in that position and looking for possible escape/exit routes, not looking to escalate things in order to put them in their place. I'm sure Shimizu could stand up for herself, if she was feeling more confident in that moment, but it was pretty clear she wanted out of that entire situation. I'm glad Hinata stepped in on her behalf, and she clearly appreciated him stepping out of his own comfort zone in an attempt to help her.

Just realized that the 'simple and pure strength' can easily be Hinata's speed too. What Grandpa Ukai describes, with younger inexperienced players getting overwhelmed by big physical advantages, is exactly what happens to Hyakuzawa's team.

I've always felt that this episode represents the author's love letter to Japanese volleyball. Let's face it, Japanese people on average will biologically never be as tall as Brazilian, or Dutch, or American players on the world stage. But if you watch JNT play, you'll realise how they use speed, agility, and have an insane defense that they've perfected.They regularly beat people much taller than them through sheer skill. Yes, height is an asset in volleyball, it is not to be underestimated. But as this episode shows - volleyball is an interesting sport, where superior skill and technique will always beat out a simple and pure strength. The author's explicit goal in creating this story was to make Japanese schoolkids fall in love with volleyball. That's why its not a coicidence that Hinata's main obstacle is height. Hinata's journey is beating opponents who are much taller than him is therefore a metaphor for Japanese volleyball. And I think that's beautiful.

These first few matches are probably not gonna be super in depth with strategy. This episode was more of a “look they no longer really struggle against teams like this” kinda episode. It’s a common anime trope after a training arc. But I still love this episode very much! I really enjoy 2meters attitude at the end of the match. He doesn’t get mad at his team for losing but instead recognizes they are playing 5 men defense, and all he can do is try and get as many points as he’s costing the team. Later he also gets one of my fav Hinata scenes so I’m also a bit biased.

The translation is sort of lacking in nuance at the end where the Johzenji guy is talking about playing. The word he's using has a pretty specific meaning that gets lost in translation. In Japanese when you talk about playing a sport, it's more like you're "doing a sport." But the word for playing used here doesn't refer to that. He's talking about having fun, describing volleyball as a really fun pastime. He's talking about playing in the same sense as playing hide-and-seek, or hanging out with friends. Not sure how I'd translate it, but I'd probably avoid using the word "play" at all because it's already used in the context of volleyball so Hinata being so confused by it seems really weird.
@Revoltine
@Revoltine 2 ай бұрын
Honestly, a practical translation's really hard to find without it sounding weird. I'm having a hard time finding a specific term that would distinguish between "competitive sports" play and "pastime" play that would fit the feel of the conversation. "Let's have some fun and play" is as close as it would get to a good translation while still sounding natural. Meanwhile, the first instance of the word just can't be remedied, at least not in any way I could think of right now.
@mikkosimonen
@mikkosimonen 2 ай бұрын
@@Revoltine Yeah, this one’s tricky. I might actually just drop nuance and have him use the word “party.” It still communicates how he views the game pretty well I think.

Hyakuzawa is one of my favorite characters in Haikyuu because anime has a tendency to portray tall players as evil brutes. He's shown as sympathetic and humble. He knows his team is relying on his point scoring and blocks. Saying to "technique doesn't matter. Steal it" meaning even he feels he hasn't earned it and knows his level as a player. But he still wants to eek out a win fighting with all he's got. That's a competitor. If you gotta rely on scrub tactics then do it. Whatever you got right now.

what i love about this episode is sure that guy is 2 meters tall but as they are playing you can see that competitiveness come out. you can see him actually fall in love with the sport. he may have been asked and joined on a whim but by the end of the match you can tell he is going to stick with volleyball at least thru high school and maybe even collage. like an owl has said "that's the moment your hooked on volleyball"

I always love your reactions! I just finiched the manga and I really really recommend it, seriously, even from the beginning, the anime does a perfect job of adapting it, I love it, but in my case I got to understand more details and players thought process thanks to that, a really interesting detail though it's small is in the very first nekoma match, when Hinata receives a serve with his face in the anime it seems that it'sjust the usual Hinata but really Kenma purposefully served it to a place and at a speed that was hard, it just made it worse that it was Hinata. Not to mention that, they say that altough the movie is great it does leave out many parts, and that match is to insane not to read fully, and the land vs air ova is waaaay better in the manga, almost completly different matches.

Minor spoilers for new movie: I'm interested to hear what everyone's opinions were on the dumpster battle movie but omg the pacing was so bad. Everything in it was amazing it just felt like 60% of the story. I'm really not looking forward to the subsequent movie if it's the same length. Reminds me of the last few seasons of game of thrones strictly for them cramming multiple seasons of material in at the end. Hopefully the movie's profits make them reconsider making more movies or going back to tv.

Regarding how high Hinata could get on the block if they were to delay their timing: Hinata has the 3rd highest vertical in the team (after Kageyama and Asahi) so I wouldn't be surprised if he could reach that high, but obviously it takes him more time to complete the block than the others so it'd still be pretty tough (also, the info we have is for a running vert, not standing)

Sarah just saw the movie this past Thursday during the Toronto meetup! Adam didn't see anything. Sarah's most likely letting Adam catch up to Season 4 before showing him the movie. It'll probably be available for streaming by then.

Oh no, you two need to watch faster, like three episodes a day, so that Adam can reach the Dumpster Battle for reaction. Ok, never mind.

This was one of the very few matches that really felt like filler to me. I mean it’s still Haikyuu so it’s still good, but not much of note developed. Very excited for what comes from here on out though!

(Slight S4 spoilers) I like that Hyakuzawa is set up quiet nicely here and makes a comeback later on though
