In the Netherlands the bike culture is one of the first things tourist will notice when arriving in the country. Today we are going to explore Utrecht Netherlands by bicycle and see how that can be. The reason I chose Utrecht is because well, it has the worlds biggest bike rack. That is a title that only the Netherlands can hold since everyone loves riding bike around the country.
There's many benefits to riding a bike such as it's more ecological to the environment which must mean the air quality in Dutch cities must be good. You also get exercise and get to experience what being a kid is like again without having to become those hard core bike riders with their Lance Armstrong sportswear.
Anyway I invite you guys to explore the city of Utrecht with me on this bike journey across the Dutch city.

So you enjoyed my hometown! Some tips from a local: 1. You can park your bike for free in the first 24 hours in every bicycle storage in the city. In the ones at the train station you can borrow a card if you don't have an OV-chipkaart. Ask the employee on site. 2. The bridge at 5:28 is not a dead end. There is a cyclepath on the bridge. It is a shorter route to the historic city center. Left from the stairs there is a (another) bicycle storage. 3. You are not allowed to cycle on the square at 5:37. There are cyclepaths arround the square. You are not allowed to bike anywhere in the city. It is not allowed to cycle on footpaths and in pedestrian areas, unless the signs say that it is allowed. Also, if there is a cycle path next to the road, you may only use the cycle path and not the road next to it. 4. The rainbow pedestrian crossing at 8:25 is there to draw attention to the diversity and acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people (LGBT people). The rabbit on the traffic light is Miffy, from a series of children's picture books made by Dick Bruna from Utrecht.

Nice! I have been to Utrecht 2 times to meet freinds long time back. I remember going to restaurants down next to the canals. Do you have to pay to use bicycle racks after 24 hours? Here in Belgium we park bicycles for free all days. Only at the closed zones ( doors open with 4 digit code), you have to pay, probably once a year. But I should say, the bicycle infrastruture is the best in the Netherlands

At 5:28 there isn’t a dead end, at least not for bicycles, just for biking. The steps have a wheel gutter on both sides, so you can walk up the stairs and your bike rides in the gutter. With handbrakes it is easy up and down, with footbreaks you must give counterweight with your body, because you cannot use the breaks, so it’s a bit difficult for some people. Now if you see a gutter on the side of the steps you know where they are used for.

The colors and decorations the bikes have are really necessary. Imagine you have to find your bike in those big parking garages! Tip for every tourist that visits The Netherlands: NEVER stop or walk on a bike path, chances are you won't survive it. The rabbit on the stoplight is Miffy (Nijntje in Dutch). The man who created her was from Utrecht.

A lot of European countrys, did vote in the 50s,,,for cars. If you look at those city centers now,its not human friendly anymore. It could be an oportunity for your country, because you did not do that back in the days. But to be honest,as a Dutch i hated our anti-car policy back in the 80s. How litle did i know back then.

If you were wondering why that bunny at 8:35 was there at the stoplights, that bunny is called Nijntje, it is a dutch childrens book series and tv series character. I used to read and watch it when I was a kid. I think they put the character at the stoplights to kinda commemorate it or something, not sure but it's pretty cute they did that.

9:52 "this spot is way outside of the city" haha, that's 10 mins walk from the train station. Maybe Volpe was disoriented from taking all these weird detours. Btw that spot was once used for loading and unloading ships. Lots of young people hang out there in summer to eat ice cream, read a book. There are also a few places there worth visiting for live music, like EKKO. Unfortunately that scene is dead now because of COVID. The whole city is a ghost town atm, I've never seen it so empty as in this video.

9:18 the idea for these Sedum roofs is that during heavy rain, they reduce the amount of water that enters the sewage system. Thus reducing the risk of floods during heavy rain. Home owners are also encouraged to use Sedum roofs. (and it is good for catching CO2 and good for polinators as well).

Utrecht is one of the cities where cars or motorised vehicles are taken off certain roads or spaces, even may be made it "car- unfriendly" They give more priority to bicycles. The Dutch bicycle almost everywhere, anytime, no matter storm of winds or rain....they just brave it...and go on. The bicycle infrastructure is one of the best in the world, and rahter safe from traffic. Here in Belgium as well...people use bicycles a lot, as it is almost a flat country. There are undeground parking racks for bicycles in the town where I live. Now they made much of streets in the town center bike friendly....making it difficult for motorised vehicles to drive in the center.

9:15 the plants do a lot more than attract bees and feed them. The plants have a cooling effect so the roof doesn't get as hot in summer. But most importantly, the plants slow the drainage of water, and retain water in the soil and roots, leaving less water that is drained into the sewer system, lessening the impact of heavy rains or long periods of rain. This reduces the impact on sewer systems and reduces flood risk. Green roofs have a ton of effects, and one main one is water control and retention, which is extremely important in a rainy country that's largely below sealevel...

Green roofs have a ton of benefits no matter where they're implemented. The cooling effect alone is enough especially in warmer climates. It reduces temperatures in cities which reduces heat and the need for air conditioning. Water is retained more and longer, which allows more moisture to evaporate back into the air before being drained, also cooling the air. And they don't just attract bees but all kinds of insects which in turn attract birds and other small animals. Green roofs allow for a slice of nature to be brought back into the city, benefitting the city in many, many ways... It's not just the NL that could benefit massively from them...
