The XC60 and S60 both got a 'good' rating in a new IIHS crash test called the 'Small Overlap Frontal Crash Test'. Most makes and models did terrible. The IIHS has said most car companies build their cars just to pass their tests. But Volvo has duplicated over 30,000 actual accidents, which is why the Volvos did so well in this surprise test by the IIHS. Yes, occasionally some cars get a better rating in one kind of simplistic car test than a Volvo, but Volvo's have real world safety.

I can (unfortunately) say that the volvo SIPS system really works. My grandpa volvo 960 took a hit of another car going about 100km/h in the drivers door, nobody got hurt, but the car was completely crooked in the middle

The S40 got an "acceptable" rating from the IIHS in its side impact test. Yes thats not a bad rating, its the second highest, but so many cars get "good" ratings now a days that I'm surprised Volvo, which is known for safety, couldn't engineer the S40 welle nough to get a "good" rating.

I have one of these at the moment.I came from a 240 saloon and a 740 prior to that and those were both solid cars..I am not certain whether my s40 is quite as strurdy or not .

After going splat into a car on a motorbike as a 19 year old. Now I’m coming to getting back on the road, My first car is going to be an S40 Volvo. I’ll be walking away next time someone wants to drive into me.

Of course a Volvo car being tested by Volvo is going to do well. A company isn't going to slam its own product. IIHS is an independent organization and they only gave it an "acceptable" rating because the dummy could suffer broken ribs and internal organ injuries... Yes, acceptable is not bad but I'd expect Volvo who has a worldwide known reputation for safety would do better. A safe car will do well in all crash tests, not just tests done by its manufacturer.

the larger ,BMW 5 series at the the time got a MARGINAL rating. I walked away with NO Injuries from a 50MPH side impact on the driver's side of my 1985 Volvo 740GLE - that car had NO airbags. The C30 which is derived from the S40 platform received an IIHS Top Safety Pick.

There is definitely not that much room between the driver and the vehicle that is hitting from the side.

i have the 2004 Volvo S40! Does it have the side air bags too? i keep my 3 yr old on the side back seat!
