I am restoring my Sugga, have owned it since 1980 and not used it for 20 years, so a very major "service" was required and I have, as always happens, found myself doing a lot more than I anticipated. Having watched this excellent video, my blood is running faster and my enthusiasm to finish my job is growing. A very good description of the vehicle.

At first, when comparing this channel with e.g the Bovington Tank Museum, I thought this channel was a bit boring and not to the same standard. But now, after a number of videos Stefan has got his own thing going and I like it more and more for every episode! More details, test drives and history behind the different vehicles. I have to admit that a visit to Arsenalen is climbing higher and higher on my bucket list. Great channel, keep it coming!

There's a reason that it was called 'suggan' (sugga is the fertile she-pig that is called 'sow' in many countries). The dimensions isn't perfect but you don't need much imagination to see the wide arse push the snout through brushes and mud. It looks stable and fertile 😁

Lovely video. The more I watch the Arsenalen videos, the more the museum's collection looks like an operational unit with its recce and command vehicles, tanks, TDs and supply train that could spring back to life at any moment if needed. That, to me, makes the Arsenalen the benchmark for most other museums. I look forward visiting it sometime in the future.

I don't think it looks beautiful but it does look functional for that time. Sweden has always prioritized the survival of the soldiers/crew but comfort wasn't seen as more than something you could handle if needed. Something like 'do you want to walk or ride uncomfortable'.

Great video, and a great car! A friend used to have a Terrängsugga a long time ago, with the original engine, and he said it was thirsty as heck. Maybe a reason for people swapping it out, to save on petrol? By the way, I love it that the current vehicle in the Swedish armed forces is called Galten (The Boar), as this earlier vehicle was called Suggan (The Sow). A nod to the one who came before.

An US motor reporter visiting a Swedish off road event thought this vehicle was custom built and not stock. I can understand that thought, because it look a litle wierd with a that car body at a 4x4 truck chassie. It's also interesting that chassie with the front end of the body was a Volvo standard for many variants of Volvo military cars/trucks from that time.
@Niinsa62
@Niinsa62 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the name, Suggan. The Sow. It was apparently not meant as a bad thing. The cab was borrowed from a civilian rear axle drive Volvo car, often used as a taxi. And also as a school bus. And when the car stopped, and lots of tiny school kids jumped out, people thought it looked like a sow giving birth to lots of piglets. So it was really the civilian car that had the nickname Suggan, the Sow. But the military version got the name too. I don't know for sure if this story is true, but it might.
@acajutla
@acajutla Жыл бұрын
Never heard that one, but it sounds as a plausible explanation. I often went to school in a Sugga, and later was among the latest to use the military version, in 1974-75. Fun car to drive, better offroad capability than the later Valpen. Also steadier on the road, and much less noise in the cabin. Top speed ~105 km/h.

@boek2777
@boek2777 Жыл бұрын
I have no idea if they were replaced or just scraped as yesterday's need (no updated crossbows in use nowadays). My guess is that radios became so portable that this type of transports became outdated. My oldest brother rode in a standard Volvo Amazon with military paint around 1974 (they did have sirens). The car contained one driver/sniper/medic, one suppressor (small machine gun with a huge magazine) and two radio opporarors with attack dogs and kpistar (kpist= m/45 in English). He and his teem responded to alerts from several tiny military airforce instillations alerts (the sound of a hangarhund reacting/ a military dog trained to kill on sight, becoming agreesive). They were always on the move so they used speed to be effective/be in the right place. With more powerful and portable radios you didn't have to climb a mountain to send a message. Radio cars wasn't needed!

The thing is, Volvo cars has been split off from the rest of the company. They only have the brand name in common. But Yeah, I think Volvo's appeal as a rugged, reliable and well-engineered utility veichle is far greater than that of a luxury car, however well built. They should have gone for something like a Hilux/Pajero/KingCab back in the nineties when Volvo's were built to withstand a nuclear war.
