Automation like this is the direction vehicles need to take, IMO. Adding features that automatically do things when the human mind fails is way better than letting the machine do all the work in every situation (which is impossible). This automation doesn't encourage drivers to be less attentive, and it only activates when the human has failed.

My Dad is a trucker and one day a cat did just runned over the street, we just wanted to leave the Highway (in Germany) and a cat did come, he did reacted so quick! These brakes will make the life of much drives more safe. Some drive soo long and get a bit dizzy and lost some reaction, this will help to protect all.

Superb! What the 38 tonner at the traffic lights in Worcester didn't have (sorry didn't see you mate!) My car was rear-ended and catapulted straight across the crossroad in spite of a red traffic light but luckily the junction was clear. Fortunately the car's seat back collapsed owing to the phenomenal acceleration so I was not hurt. Unfortunately they don't make cars like that anymore. These days anyone in a bump like that would be claiming for whiplash but in the good old days people were more honest than they are now.

I see a lot of concern for the drivers behind the truck, and I kind of get the worry; a non-attentive driver may very well end up rear-ending the semi, which would suck for the car driver. However, even with this awesome system, a semi (whether fully loaded or not) won't be stopping faster than a car with standard brakes would be able to. I guarantee that no matter how fast a truck stops in front of me, if I have a reasonable following distance (which is a no-brainer when I follow a semi, since I like to have time to dodge potholes and whatnot that the truck would obstruct), I'll be able to stop far faster than it, regardless of how great the truck's system is. It's just physics, my 1.5 ton car will stop faster than a 14 or 40 ton semi. If the driver isn't paying attention or is being a tailgaiting asshole, well then... the result would probably be the same regardless of if the truck had this system or not.

Hi question for you Volvo, first the system looks amazing, but will it work at higher speeds - that is to say it appears in the video it applies the brakes. But what if the truck is travelling faster (in reality I've seen some trucks doing 75-80 MPH). So in a case like that, will the truck (automatically) stop further in advance, or will the truck first automatically slow and THEN stop if needed?

the truck first applies mild braking before it goes over to full braking. so drivers behind the truck have time to slow down. and your typical car can outbrake a semi truck aswell so i wouldent worry about people rear ending the truck unless they are stupid enough to tailgate a truck or are just plain blind.

My question is, if the driver hit the brakes at the same time the automatic system would kick in, would that be enough to stop the truck? Like.. I guess what I'm wondering is there anything special about the automatic system breaking vs a regular person breaking. Not in terms of like, reaction or whatever. But more in a sense of, do the breaks from the automate system work harder than if the driver was breaking? If that makes any sense. It blows my mind how quickly it can stop and I'd like to see a comparison of human stopping vs it.

"If there is no reaction from the driver, the system will automatically activate the brakes." The system should not wait for the driver to react, it should start breaking imediatly by it self to avoid panicbraking. Also, he activates the cruise control in the video, will the emergency brake work even if he would accelerate? Will it work in speeds over 50km/h?

The system worked today, it saved an idiot in a 4x4 who, wanted to test it, from being T-boned. He cut across in front of me whilst I was 44 ton fully loaded travelling at 40mph (64kmh). A camera and sensor will always react quicker than a human can in this situation.

@oppfattet 11 жыл бұрын
Its up to the driver to secure his cargo efficiently, and securely, its actually a part of his job to do that. And if your cargo isn't properly secured you'd drive carefully anyway, with or without the safety systems I'm sure. There's also a way to de-activate the collision-system.

The brakes on all modern (European) trucks are hydraulic disc brakes, running off an electronic system that ensures each individual wheel is braking at optimal efficiency - braking more or less, depending on grip. A fully loaded truck will stop faster than an empty one due to the increased grip caused by the pressure on the road. Empty or full, a modern truck will stop faster than your car - don't tail-gate a truck!
@GaryGoldberg-DigiMark
@GaryGoldberg-DigiMark 10 жыл бұрын
Seems like a great system and even if a percentage of these types of collisions are prevented it would be worth every penny to refit as many trucks and cars as possible. I do wonder how it would perform at higher highway speeds, with an unstable or unsecured loading shifting in response to the delta-V or in inclement weather (can't cheat physics) but any improvement will be welcome. Thanks Volvo!
