Btw note that the speed limit in our acceleration test was not 100 as shown in the instruments, it was unlimited. The traffic sign recognition just didn't get that. I'd never speed to 180 with a limit of 100. /Thomas

i just want EVs to be simple and usable, they do not need to be futuristic spaceships, this is a good start for Volvo.

exactly. Most manufacturers try to make their EVs as futuristic and distinctive as possible. We, consumers just want an electric car in a classic packaging, not a spaceship

Ordered mine in January with 9k worth of extras. Negotiated 10k discount from the dealer and the 5k government rebate, so 15k off the price 😁. Arranged delivery in July

Such a great, thorough review. I always especially appreciate the ride quality descriptions, particularly the comparisons between the various wheel sizes. As a consumer, it’s not easy to ask the dealer for lengthy test drives for each wheel sizes, so your descriptions are important.

XC40 in general is a great car, especially electric. But the price is absolutely outrageous. 40-50k euro what I would expect, but not 70-80k for a small budget SUV. Volvo lately went completely nuts with prices for their electric cars

Yes, it will be virtually impossible to recover the extra cost from fuel savings unless you own it for many, many years and do very high miles per year. Within 3/4 years they will come down in price and new models will do even further so these early fully electric cars will age quickly

As Thomas said, if you spec a B5 with the same extras and you remove the 7.5k electric rebate, you end up with 1k difference. And for the 1k you get 300kW and Google compared

I am a previous lease owner of the XC40 ICE 2 years ago when it launched and I LOVED THAT CAR!! I'm just concerned with the XC40 Recharge Electric and it's pricing and range. Is it a worthwhile investment considering the alternatives (looking at you Model Y)? I was quoted $53k USD (before tax credits) at the local Volvo dealership for the electric XC40. Should I pull the trigger on this or the Model Y?

I love it. It’s tiny but still very nice sized. The problem in the United States continues to be charging stations in much of the country. In the Midwest, Pacific Northwest and the south where charging stations are available compared to petrol. One note, I love listening to German speakers. Everything sounds very clinical and in control. I watch all of this guy’s videos.

Definitely will test drive this and see how it compared to the Polestar 2 I tried. The lack of range indicator is unacceptable. It's what I rely on whether driving gas or electric.

I’ve bought a new Volvo XC40 Full Electric. I get it in Mar/Apr. can hardly wait. Just a note, I get your comments on ‘road noise’, but no reviewer ever mentions you are likely to have your favourite music playing, so the road noise will be covered by that. Great review, but yeah, just a thought

The drivetrain on the XC40 is the same as on the Polestar 2. Its set up to be 50/50. So it is not front wheel biased, as the Hybrids are or the normal ICE versions are. Do understand its easy to make that mistake, as the other Volvos are FWD of FWD biased normally.

Only design appearance I do not like is rear window raising line towards roof. Would prefer more glass in that area.

I would like a "downmarket" version of this - we already have a fancy XC90 T8 Inscription for the "luxury" part (the B&O sound system is spectacular). I just need a new EV that's big enough to pack some range equipment and guns (my BMW i3 was too small for longer items).

Winter time in the cold weather consumption is over 30-35kwh, so range is around 250km. not over 400km (WLTP)

WLTP is not measured in winter conditions. But you are correct that it is higher in winter

Ok, so I Drive one. I really like the car. It drives very well, stable, powerful, nice high seat, Driving character is great. You will not feel the weight. As for systems - you get a lot of help, but nothing is really intrusive, the autopilot works quite well. What can and will still improve is range (I heard we will get 50km extra) in cold weather, and the app including battery preheating & laoding curve for the battery for fast charging can still be improved. As for daily use - great car. For longer drives - the updates will help get the range above 300km also in very cold conditions. I have seen a max range of 280km in wintery conditions around 0 centigrade. Currently it will easily reach 350. For sure software will be improved just like Tesla did. Overall I am a happy user. I have a version with leather seats/power seats, lounge pack (glass roof), colored glass and some other extra's. Very luxurious car. Feels like I am driving a tank on steroids, that handles like a cart. Basically this is the nicest EV in this price range currently on almost all aspects. But Tesla has better range.

Ordered one a month ago, still haven't got delivery date, that's my biggest turn off on this car. Its a Volvo so they handel like boats no matter what model you have... I have more or less owned or driven them all... I have ordered everything except 20" rims. Pricy, abit short range compared to the size of the battery, but the quality and service beats Tesla to the ground big time. No increased range or charger stations beats that. If TEsla sold their cars to 50% discount, ill consider a Tesla. But I will be happy with my car when ever i get it

@@cofal79 on the range you are correct, it is not huge. However I can assure you this car does not feel or handle like a boat. It is heavy but you cannot feel that at all. Because of the weight and low point of gravity it feels much more like a sporty drive. Driving experience is great, one of the best cars I ever drove. Enjoy your car! I hope they will have enough chips for all the systems to produce - this is an issue in the whole car industry, for this electric and reasonably intelligent one this is extra dofficult. BTW: spotify directly on the system is great.

nice legs :-) and now seriously about the car. This package looks very tempting. In reality from design point of view this car is a success at lest for me. I like it is AWD. I like it picks very fast and the interior is very well designed. But when we come to the price, I for sure would look around for more options.

you who write / talk about cars, you should be careful to say that the larger wheels are less comfortable! obviously the optional wheels have the same diameter, with the different rims, and what changes is the height of the tire shoulder which, being SMALLER with BIGGER rims, determines the least comfort (for those not looking for performance!). Not everyone in the audience has the experience necessary to understand that when it comes to dimensions that worsen comfort, we mean this: you also have a pedagogical function. However, the car must be fabulous! I have a BMW i3 that, despite those SKINNY wheels, is a marvel. I imagine this Volvo !!! Can't wait to have one

@Antonio Zamudio In the U.S., Polestar currently has very limited sales/service locations basically in the Los Angeles & New York City areas and they CANNOT be serviced at Volvo dealers...so "today", the XC 40 Recharge is the better choice in my opinion.

@@miata1370 I'd agree that the polestar is better if you prefer a sedan and if you don't mind possible issues that arise with a smaller company (worse service availability).

@Antonio Zamudio polestar has a sloped rear, unlike the Volvo and for most, you would need to have it serviced and the software manually updated at a Volvo dealer

I miss my XC40 so much. It had some issues.....but the thing I did not liked was the gas consumptions (it was regular but I was coming from a hybrid). I hope I can get another volvo in the future. Now thanks to the Covid and some bad decisions I ended up with a crappy Chevrolet Malibu hehe. Not complaining,,,,it does it's job...

If you take a look at our driving parts of the reviews, you see that we of course have clip-on microphones. However there are several good reasons to use the handheld microphone very often, we do that intentionally. See more details here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p56dldqW38rDho0.html

I think you answered your own question why it’s not just called the XC40 EV; they will probably call the less powerful versions P6, P4, or whatever. :-)

Volvo advised me that the P stands for Pure and the 8 for for the battery capacity of 78 rounded to 80. So suggests that a P5 would be the next with a 50kWh battery.

For 2022 here in the US, the twin motor Recharge is now badged simply “Recharge Twin”. No P8, etc.

@@XLoaferY look at his seating position, it looks cramped. And where do you see leg room? There's barely any space. Kids grow up fast and quickly become taller than some adults, any wagon or some middle class SU vehicles is clearly better suited than a compact crossover...

I am driving sometimes the 2019 volvo 90 Cc, its...awesome, but 60k for a pure electric xc40? 44k for recharge entry Modell ? I get full Equipment model kamiq and cx-30 for arround 30k... Yes, i know, not ev, but more mileage...let's wait some years..not worth it at the moment.

Well you compare it to ICE models of other cars. This is the pure electric. The ICE version of this car is about 25-40k

That Volvo 180 kph restriction was a news for me. It's ok basically, but do they sell cars in Germany with such limit? I mean it's luxury segment and 180 kph at Autobahn isn't such extreme speed. I easily imagine a customer choosing Audi, BMW or MB with 250 kph limit, even if it will not use it every day.

For an EV you really shouldn't go faster, it doesn't make sense, which is why Volvo introduced the limit anyways. Many EVs don't go over 160. However, if you have a petrol or diesel Volvo with the limit, you just download V-Dash and remove the limit. 😜🤫

Thomas, what are your thoughts about left foot space? At 6:26 your left foot looks cramped. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iKmqqMur1rKxlHU.html Lack of left foot space takes the XC40 off of my list. I've had a few Volvos and want to downsize from an XC60 to XC40 for city driving. The vertical side wall pushes my foot to the right and the steep angle of the foot rest points my foot upward too steeply. I'm just over 6'. After being in the car for 20 minutes my lower leg hurts. I'm very disappointed because otherwise I really love the vehicle. I've seen no reviewer of the XC40 or Polestar 2 comment on this, so maybe it's just me.

Dont have any issues with the space in the XC40, but then im 6,1, still over 6. In my current car a V70 gen 2 there is no space behind me at all, same in the model 3. Even tho the Tesla salesman tried to be cool and go plenty of space here, and had to move the drivers seat forward so he could get out... Anyway. The question arrives to how often do you sit in the back seat?

I would prefer brake pedal braking as the start up mode. It would be a nightmare to always have to estimate how fast the car in front of you comes to a stop as we see in this vid with the v70/xc70 encounter

One pedal driving doesn't eliminate the use of the brake pedal. You can still use it, but the car no longer coasts. We test drove the P8 in January and both my wife and I got used to it so quickly to only use one pedal, only using the brake pedal a handful of times

No bloody "range remaining"! Grrr! But... I was thinking about this. The criticism still stands of course but it occurs to me that if this is your car then you will learn to estimate, you will have a feel for how the driving style is and of course it's only an issue if you are driving a long way from home (home charging assumed). And you can ask Google. So if you're heading off on a one way long trip you will probably plan a bit in advance where to recharge. And if you're using the satnav then it calculates the % remaining (although there is a discrepancy between the car and the Google system, see eg Chris Rifa or Tesla Bjørn reviews). So an irritation, yes I agree. The more reviews I watch of lots of EVs the more I realise it requires that compromise of pluses & negatives for each potential buyer. I like this car, the Polestar and also the Mercedes EQA & Audi e-tron Q4. How to choose?? Before test drives this Volvo is currently in pole position for my preferences.

Compared to this car, a Tesla Y somehow looks and feels cheap. I'll take this (or the Mustang Mach E) anytime over the Tesla.

What he should mention its a long wait period for this car. I know, still waiting to have a date to when its gonna be delivered, and it was a month since i ordered the car... I do agree on the Tesla remark. But if you want an EV fast, this is not the car as deliverytime is a nightmare

Hi there, I see that Volvo has now announced the all electric C40 (crossover based on the all electric XC40 and it can now be ordered (in the UK at least). Will there be an Autogefuehl review soon? I want to know about the rear head room; the video at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n6l4irOAv7udgZs.html has Tim Stevens sitting in the back (quite tight against the roof) but he does not tell us how tall he is (it is great the Thomas makes sure we know that he is 1.86!).

Nice review Thomas. I don't like repurposed designs or console mounted shifters. All other design elements seem fine. I don't believe Geely has really proven itself yet as the POLESTAR entry hasn't impressed me very much. I would like to see a lot more movement on the software side and more options on what is displayed. Batteries in space intruding tunnels do not cut it with me.

don't think of it that way; they placed them there to avoid raising the floor. Usually nobody sits in the middle anyway so I don't think that's a big deal.

@@XLoaferY It was an additional dislike for repurposed designs in general. I want an EV specific design to get the best use of space. I went with Model 3 LR. Not the best riding car on bumpy roads but a fun daily driver anyway and quieter and much nicer inside than I anticipated. I read too many reviews which kinda delayed my purchasing for a year.

No HUD, no kilometres to empty display is not good for this vehicle. Also, was hoping the infotainment unit would have been upgraded to the Polestar 2 unit. I think VW are in front.

I personally dislike the Polestar 2 system. Personal preferences. Was considering an ID.4, but then came the recall due to hardware and software in the infotainment systems. So I ordered the Volvo

408 hk to be exact, 204 front and 204 rear Over 600 Nm of torque. It moves 2,2 tons of car 0-100 in 4,9 seconds and it continues to pull up to 180km/h
