What it looks to me is that there is rubber at the bottom of the sides so that when u want to go over bumps it wont damage the truck. You can see it clearly at 2:52 below the words "Energy" on the sides.

All trucks have (rear axles) air suspension for coupling and uncoupling and also because it’s safer for the roads. Also the trailers have air suspension for levelling and loading/unloading bay height. But the side skirts have rubber pieces that fold when going over bumps or kerbs.
@JohanW-Sweden
@JohanW-Sweden 8 ай бұрын
I would imagine that a lot of aerodynamics wins comes from reducing the drag at the end of the trailer. In the video, you hardly ever see the back of the truck, but there is some sort of shape attached to the back. Wouldn't it be best to just put a wedge or even better a cone on the back to reduce drag?

@@mobletBoat tails have proven to be problematic due to lack of training and understanding of the system by low IQ drivers. Our 13ft 6 overall height restricts our designs as do box vans our efficiency in deliveries and pick ups.

The end of the trailer is no where near as big of a problem as the sides as far as i can understand. The air friction on the sides is the main problem. Also as far as i know you want a sharp cutoff at the end of vehicles as you want the air to leave going in a straight path, as when it doesn't leave in a straight path you get that pocket of turbulence.

I think it looks like great. However, some years Volvo plays around with allowing us the highest (USA standard) 600ish HP/2050 torque in VNL's, but usually not. They say cooling capacity is why. So although I think it looks really good, I'd be concerned that they say nothing over 450 or maybe 500. Some of us haul freight that needs more HP to get the job done and not be a rolling road hazard. Please keep our options open! ALSO, cabovers have been gone so long that our roads have changed. I'd believe drivers would go nuts over them in the states now. I know I'd order a pair of heavy spec'd ones the first day we could.

Volvo already has a full lineup of bev trucks in europe. In the US they only have the VNR so far and it's somewhat meh. But their european lineup is great. Range is acceptable for everything except long international hauls, and it will work there with better infrastructure and a bit faster charging in a few years. And they haul the full 64 metric tons that's allowed here. Scania even have a few specialty trucks doing up to 80 metric tons in mining and logging operations. All fully electric and running around the clock.

The video mentions smaller tires - does anyone know what size was used? The linked Volvo "innovation" web page mentions 19.5" wheels. They don't mention it in the video, but the webpage talks about fewer axles, suggesting that this is a 4X2... it would be difficult to carry the typical payload of a classic "18-wheeler" (one steer axle with single tires, tandem drive axles with dual tires, tandem trailer axles with dual tires) configuration with any fewer axles under North American rules.

The lower 6 inches should be the brush type fairing to prevent damage. It would be advantageous if the front axle was on air and the truck height could be set to the terrain. An average driver would not drive like a company demo driver and skirt/fairing damage would be quite frequent and become expensive to keep legal and effective. We should look at roof options in design such as a slight pear shape which has been proven in Gt Britain, with no more maintenance than any other roof. Aerodynamics would be better all around especially if we reduce the gap between the tractor and trailer headboard. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇺🇸

Everything they mention as drag reducing work has been known for over 100 years. Just check out Tatra's illustrations of air drag. Knowing that, the Supertruck still looks very conventional. And we also know that the American market ignores everything sensible; just look at the car market and how big trucks with big wheels - unsafe, dirty and inefficient - remain the biggest sellers.

I’ve got new trucks and older ones in my fleet and am more comfortable driving the older ones knowing they don’t got all the technology and sensors that go bad. Did you see the video of this same truck already getting towed because of some issues they have already
