Cook Woods is awesome. I live about a mile from his shop and have spent many hours just looking. He has some stunning pieces.

Recently found your channel and I really enjoy watching your new and old content. I've been woodworking for many years and now that I've retired, I'm thinking of getting into turning. I like how you explain everything, make jokes and I really enjoy all of your finished products. You make it look so easy but I know it's very hard to do. Thanks so much and stay healthy and safe.

I had just tried to turn a blank that had the same chalenges as this one you showed. Fortunately, I stopped to wait until I built more skills to try it, so this gorgeous blank wasn't wasted. GREAT video and I like the way you narrate during the turning...especially what speed you are turning at. I'm going to make a couple of these with smaller pieces of wood and use battery powered votive "candles". They will be for my granddaughters and for children that's a safer option.

Tim; It is possible to hone the carbide cutters easily. Put the cutter cutting edge down on a credit card diamond hone with a drop of two of water. Move in a figure 8 pattern 8 times, rotate 90 degrees, repeat 3 more times. Wipe the hone and bit. DONE! I have carbide bits that are YEARS old. I recently had to replace one. it was getting too thin!

Tim although i enjoy most of what you do I really think you made hard work of turning what is a simple shape.You do not need to spend a small fortune on carbide scrapers to achieve good results. Simply using a push cut working left handed from small to big using a 3/8 bowl gouge as you would do turning the outside of a bowl. You achieve two things simultaneously . You turn it to round and achieve your required shape at the same time. You would not have any chunks coming off doing it this way. Colin Parr

i've found it a lot easier to trim the corners of large pieces at about a 45 degree angle close to round size before turning them. reduces rounding time and dust. Saves tool edges, too

Hi Tim Once again an excellent presentation and a nice swanky named project. I would disagree with Max N about scrapers. You should use the tool that gets the best finish and scrapers do it in this instance. However, I would like you also to stop calling them scrapers. They are Carbide Shapers, far better description of the tool's function. Finally, I have found over the years that you can take Shaper Tips off the tool and hone the flat side and that lengthens the life of the tip. When do we get to see the highly skilled cameraman who makes you look fantastic, surely he should take a bow from time to time? Cheers

I really like this project. Have you ever thought of parting the peace on the tip of the bottom and top of the curves and making a bowl with a lid as well? Keeping the cut sharp to hide the fact that it is two peace's. Just a thought. Good tips. Thanks

If your finished piece is going to be round, why not cut off the corners on the band saw to make it octagonal. That way you don’t tear out the wood at the corners.

You can sharpen the carbide. Use the credit card style diamond file. It's not as sharp but you can sharpen them

I always cut the corners off before I chuck the piece. I end up using the cutoffs for pen blanks. Cool project though

Maybe try a PCD (Polycrystalline Diamond) tipped insert with a high positive rake from metal cutting industry. It will outlast carbide inserts 10 to one.

I loved the instructional aspects, but I do have concerns about the exotic wood sources.

Tim, long time fan of your show and a turner also...question?how do I keep my face shield from fogging up with my breathe, I've the same set up as you for the most part for face shields but they keep on fogging until I either hold my breathe or give it up all together.hope you can help.

Tim, I love the piece and the shape. I have a question about your selection of the carbide tool. It looks like you selected the mini-rougher based upon the length of the handle. Is there a reason why this tool was selected over the midsized or full sized tool? Thanks in advance.
