In this video we listen to a Vox AC30HW 2x12 combo. We begin with a look at the features and controls and then dive in to the sound. After that we take a look inside and sniff out any problems it may have before giving it another listen. This amp features turret board construction on the main circuit board and you'll see how nice and neat the inside of this amp is.
This amplifier is now up for sale in my Reverb Shop which can be found here: reverb.com/shop/bbmade
The specific listing is here: reverb.com/item/8403022-vox-a...
Anyone is welcome to contact me through my website at www.bbmade.com.

Cool amp! Always loved the ac30. Saw Jeff Beck with the yardbirds in 65! They had all vox and blew my 11 year old mind!!!

14:30 you should use a piece of wax paper over the area after you apply the superglue, that way your finger can't get bonded to it which hurts like hell to try and pull off plus it will mess up the repair. Then, after it's dried and looks kinda shinny from the wax, just wipe off the wax with a bit of naphtha (lighter fluid) on a piece of paper towel. Also make sure you don't use too much superglue or it will squeeze out and spread all over the area.

I bought and ac30hw2 on reverb. Not sure how old it was but I wasnt crazy about it until I changed the tubes. A new rectifier and power tubes and its so much better. Its a fabulous sounding amp. I dont think the build quality and layout is too good though. Trying to remove the chassis to get to the tubes was real bitch! The tolex was applied in such a way that it the chassis pulls it off the wood when removing it. One of the threaded nuts thata welded to the chassis fell off. The impedance switch bent in to the amp when trying to use it . The thingys that hold down the tubes want to shred your fingers! Not to mention the 15 screws you have to remove to pull the chassis out so you can change the tubes. It just couldve been laid out so much better. Needless to say I'm just going to leave the chassis on top of the amp. Pain in the balls. Sounds great though.

Thanks for the detailed inspection! I recently inherited an AC30HW2X. What does the "X" signify, and what's the difference between these two amps?
@bbmade
@bbmade Жыл бұрын
Hello, sorry I don’t recall the difference other than to say there were hand wired versions made in Vietnam and England (I think). I don’t deal with Vox amps very often and this was the only one I’ve owned.

I wish I could say but honestly I’m not a Vox aficionado. This was a hand wired version made overseas (Vietnam?) and I was impressed with the inside build quality and sound even though tonally I’m much more a fan of Fender amps. Thanks for the comment!

Is Vox AC30HWH worth to buy and how much better sound than Vox AC30 C2x ? Unfortunately AC30 C2x have the valve socket on the PCB which I don’t think is very good?
@bbmade
@bbmade 5 жыл бұрын
This is tough for me to answer because I’m much more of a Fender guy than a Vox. Generally speaking I always like the sound of an AC30 when anyone but me is playing it. The hand wired versions are impressive, even the ones made in Vietnam. If you don’t already own a Vox and may be on the fence about Vox in general I would go play one in a store. I wouldn’t worry too much about the tube sockets mounted to a PCB personally speaking. If it saves more than a hundred to two hundred and sounds as good I’d save that money and not buy the hand wired. Don’t buy either online unless you know for sure you love the Vox sound. I hope that helps!

Thanks for your responce. I own a 2016 model AC30C2X build by Vox manufacturing China under the direction of Vox R&D England. The Amp sound great but the store where I bought the Amp didn't have the hand wired model so I was not able to compare the sound. I am worried about the tube socket mounted to the PCB - as you can see at the pictur the PCB get very hot - it's burnt a little around the socket. (Unfortunately, it was not possible to send you the picture) So it's just a matter about time before the components on the PCB breakdown I think. About Vox AC30HWH have this Amp much hum or is it quiet? Comparering my Vox AC30C2x combo to My Marshall Silver Jubilee Model 2558. The Masrshall Amp has much less hum. - It's bad Vox AC30HWH does not has FX loop send/return but can it be installed? - As a Fender guy do you think Fender Vibroverb 1963 is so much better sounding than todays Fender amps?
@bbmade
@bbmade 5 жыл бұрын
I’ve seen scorched PCB’s on Blues Juniors so they can get too hot no doubt about it. I usually resolder them and sometimes the bias can be changed to cool things down a little. Early 60’s Fender amps have a mystique for many. The circuits have changed over the years but also the older amps have components that drift over time which I often wonder may contribute to the old amps sounding better. I’m not an amp expert, my background is in guitar repair and guitar building. I’ve been a serious hobbyist with amps for many years. It’s a bit of an obsession for me these days. Vibroverbs and Vibrolux amps are some of my personal favorites.

If I replace the tubes do I need to adjust the bias?
@bbmade
@bbmade 4 жыл бұрын
William Turner - Depends on the tubes. Any of the 12ax7’s would not need to be biased. If I remember correctly this Vox had four EL84 power tubes which are usually “self biasing” or cathode biased so you wouldn’t need to bias them. I would check to make sure you know what power tubes your amp has and if it’s cathoded biased or fixed bias.

Philippe Battesti Thanks for the comment! I preferred the 30 watt mode myself because it had more headroom. I did like that it had the 15 watt mode which I think could come in handy for recording or maybe a person would want a little break up in the tone without cranking the volume up as much.

The preamp section is great for cleans. The power amp Needs to be converted to 6L6 power amp tubes. Also the words hand wired don't mean a Fuking thing when compared to a PCB type in terms of sound.

Unfortunately, the Korg Vox Amps are poor quality; constructed with cheap components.. which means they cannot be relied on to work properly for very long. Not good value for money. Expect them to fail sooner than later. This is sad because as much as I want a classic design Vox valve amp, I can't afford an old one, nor waste money on a new Korg Vox. I regret being persuaded to part exchange my 1960s AC30 way back in the 1970s. It my first amp when I was an inexperienced teenager, and AC30s were really cheap 2nd hand...

From what I understand there are a few too many cheap parts in these China production amps but its Vox the company that selects the parts they use in them. So much for the going "Green" banter. Green means using the natural resources in a non wasteful way.And disposable is not green..unlike the PCB Amps these are semi green

The words hand wired only means the following. To attract the stupid to pay $5000 for it, because it is hand wired. The PCB version runs quieter less hum and noise. Because it has much better shielding. The PCB version does a better job at keeping unwanted radio stations and other magnetic fields out of the amps signal paths. The words hand wired are for the stupid, who are brain washed by all the threads, and have lots of money to blow. Its not how old the amp is in order to be good. The words Mullard, ISKRA, Piher means absolutely nothing. The capacitance and resistance values are 90% of the fault, as to why it is what it is regarding the tone.

I don’t know what the retail on this amp originally was. It was made in Vietnam and not in England so perhaps there are price differences based on where they’re made. I acquired it on the used market and sold it on Reverb.

If it was $5000, then yes, you paid way too much. But the HW AC30s are $2000. And I got one used for around $1000. Money well spent. I will say, however, it hums more than my C2 when the MV is disengaged. Other than that, it's a better sounding amp.

you're right about many the wrong ways of the guitar world, like the snake oil and mythology, pricing based on notions . . . or brand seeking without putting thought to where they want to go musically. But each manufacturing method has its own pro's and cons . hand wired might be used to copy vintage design, or have their own take on vintage inspired builds . . . or an amp designer that wants to select specific components. Also maintenance and future modification is easier for hand wired. Someone like DUmble use hand wire as he solders components and desolders to change them out and replace them on cycles of tests until it's where he wants it to sound. PCB can use finer and more complicated circuit designs and for manufacturers that want to mass produce their design. PCB is more consistent in terms of Q/A and less error variance, and also can be made with modern features (such as shielding). But PCB also requires a factory, CAD, equipment and logistics that a small group of amp builders might have access to, but a larger company like Fender has. PCB amps are also used for the newer digital and solid state amps . . .A gigging guitarist might like PCB based amp because they are common and easily to find / rent in all cities, and easy to replace. A studio owner may like the tone of specific handwired boutique tone or an audiophile guitarist might want a point to point handwired amp

Wanting a hand wired amp for a lot of people like myself comes down to one thing: serviceability. I have a hand wired AC15 because I wanted an amp I could keep for years and years and repair as needed. If a pot shaft breaks off I can solder in a new one myself in about 5 minutes. Any component that fails can be easily changed in most cases without removing the board. And the $5000 ones were the 60th anniversary amps made in England, of which they only made 150 of each. They were collector's items. My hand wired ac15 (in black instead of fawn btw) was $1400 used with an alnico blue. The modern PCB ac15 with a blue speaker is $1200 new. A well designed PCB amp can be as good or better than a hand wired amp but go easy on the Hatorade. I swear people go directly to the comments section of a gear review with zero first-hand knowledge of the product just to shit all over it because anything they can't afford or don't understand is "hype". Buy the best gear you can afford, go enjoy it, and mind your business - too many people worried about how other people spend their own damned money.
