Going green does not need to be a sacrifice, either for us as individuals or for businesses, governments and the economy.
This is the second episode of Climate Lab, a six-part series produced by the University of California in partnership with Vox. Hosted by Emmy-nominated conservation scientist Dr. M. Sanjayan, the videos explore the surprising elements of our lives that contribute to climate change and the groundbreaking work being done to fight back. Featuring conversations with experts, scientists, thought leaders and activists, the series takes what can seem like an overwhelming problem and breaks it down into manageable parts: from clean energy to food waste, religion to smartphones. @Salmon Man I sometimes feel like there is so many people offended by the sheer existence of vegans and it sometimes seems to me that more people proclaim that they eat meat rather than saying they are vegan. That might be my surroundings, but I still find it funny that the stereotype sticks. And that people try to bring up veganism at any given point, just to make a point that isn't even necessarily grounded in reality.

Alex Schmidt even if carbon dioxide doesn't cause massive global warming, it reacts with ocean water creating carbolic acid, increasing the acidity of the ocean, killing wildlife. Also, global warming is significant not only because of CO2, but also because of methane from cows, which DOES have a large impact on global temperature

I used to work in a lunch room where they would give people a €0,50 discount when people would bring their own cup for their take away coffee. I thought that was a really smart initiative
@Erin-rg3dw

Most coffee shops I've seen who accept reusable cups do something similar. Fast-food style ones like Dunkin don't accept cups except for basic coffee/tea. Depending on the drink, the cup costs more than the beverage does for the seller. For example, a fountain soda cup often costs more than the soda inside it. If the seller just discounted the cost of the cup, that's still decent savings for both the seller and the buyer. Less waste and more money for both.

The only issue with charging companies for the waste they generate is that they will shift their production somewhere else. USA puts taxes on CO2 emitted, shift production to Bangladesh. Such laws, somehow, need to be implemented around the globe.

@@brandielee7971 the UN isn't really a governing body. It merely... suggests. Have you noticed its list of sustainable goals? They are goals, not laws. In order for it to be taken seriously by all, every nation needs to sign a treaty saying they will take so-and-so steps. Even then, UN doesn't really have means to enforce these agreements. For example, if Trump goes through the entire process of withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, there is no way anyone can stop him from doing so.

wouldn't charging for plastic bags be just "more capitalism"? It allows companies to see a slight increase in their profits while reducing emissions at the same time. As a free-market supporter this makes sense on so many levels, its a win-win.
@suninsplendor6220
@suninsplendor6220 7 жыл бұрын
dev02ify While true in certain cases free market as far as I understand is more toward large companies not having a buttload of power. Sorta promoting small businesses? But yeah the less regulation in there is certainly part of it. However in some circumstances less regulation is good, like say if the regulation has become outdated and no longer useful, or if its putting a stranglehold on the business. Less regulation is not no regulation after all, companies shouldn't be able to do as they please because at the end of the day they aren't human, they're a large system designed to turn a profit, no matter what. Loosening regulations a bit is something that's good or bad depending on the circumstances, and really that's what it all comes down to, circumstance dictates a lot more than you'd think it would in business. Anyway I've said my piece, feel free to correct any factual errors, please do show me your reasoning though, "your wrong" never really helps all that much. Have a good day, god knows you wasted a few minutes reading this mini essay in the KZfaq comments. Well, hopefully not wasted, but you know what I mean.

I know, but the companies could actively do it as a way to increase profits without needing gov't intervention. What I was trying to say was it is rather strange that these companies dont do this already, it only holds benefits.

Remember your free will and others free will , so don`t tread on others free will to achieve your goals , common ground is paramount i these times or else the ground you stand on will perish in that alternative future , Linier timeline . Work together is the best way to achieve our bright future together , it dosn`t matter how much money you have or valuables you have collected, what matters in these cases is what you do with your values !? Remember that the farmer is the first to get food on the table ! so do not look down on others for they are all equal to you . we will work for the common good for all too see , too experience feel and learn , them that keeps people in the dark by keeping them away from information that will enlighten them by going to school /jobs ,a community ,not a egomunity ! collect Lightning i accumulators to provide electricity for all , desalination plants in desert locations with water-pumps driven by solar power that , pumps clean water in deep in to the desert to provide subsistence for for local fauna/nature . Rebuild the gardens of ancient sites , Like Puma pumkhu Ollyantanyambo , Giza Egypt Paraguay Peru mexico +++ to reep the fruits of ancient sites this will provide food for all . soldiers of truth and future is needed on a greater scale never in history seen before , and this is a good thing , we need to clean up our mess , for a common goal ,common wealth , not in money value but the value of living of and with the planet . make more hydrogen plants to fuel your cars ,the only thing that comes out the exsos is Water , so imagine this in Egypt , every car motorcycle truck , will spray out clean water everywhere they drive , spreading out steam that will make things cooler in temperature in future time together with seeding new fauna that will hold more water , that evaporates in time when this is done ,will make the rain season to go back to normal slowing desert spreading. Relax slow down , spend more time with your family , we need more kindness to each other ,remember that the earth is round so what you do to our earth effect others , and also you , karma boomerang like the ripples in a pond ,when you cast a stone but the ripples does not stop at the edge of the pond.

What I do not understand about the US is you have so many renewable energy sources like the hot and burning sun in Arizona, Carlifornia or Taxes, wind in on the costs and so much geothermal energy. Honestly, a lot of countries would do a lot to have so much opportunities to produce energy but you still rely on inefficent and expensive fossil fuels which will never guarantee the energy-independence of the US. If the government and the companies worked together, the US could go entirely on green renewable energy, could create high-paid sustainable jobs and could even help extremely to stop global warming.
@xxmysweetkisses
@xxmysweetkisses 6 жыл бұрын
The is a polarization about renewable energy. If it isn’t an exact perfect solution it’s thought of as frivolous and wasteful. You talk about solar energy and someone against it will tell you how sand gets on the panes and would cost money to keep clean. Or that jobs would suffer in the other industry. Windmills kill birds and bats. Etc etc. I even tried showing the person against windmills an article about a tower that shifts with wind to collect the energy instead of having the blades. Plus a lot of people have a nimby complex. They don’t want to see it. Basically what I’m trying to say is some people really don’t want to change as frustrating as it is. You’ll always get a “but what about ...” response. For example I use cloth diapers for my baby and I hear “but what about the energy it takes to wash them. It’s not really any better than disposable is it?” 🙄
@paulwebb2078
@paulwebb2078 6 жыл бұрын
The only issue is that as of right now fossil fuels ARE more efficient than renewables, that's why they're being used so much. But as technology improves, renewables should be able to catch up.

Planes, cellphone towers, building windows, pesticides, fence wiring and cars kill way more birds each year than anything. Humans have been destroying bird habitats way before wind energy was a thing. I never see people talking about that but as soon as you bring up turbines that is all they can complain about. Most don’t care about the birds lives, they are just finding excuses because they are afraid of change.
@storyls
@storyls 6 жыл бұрын
Its also worth pointing out that keeping "the grid" powered is a bit more of a complicated process than is initially thought. For example, California has a problem. The duck curve. This is a curve which shows energy demand vs energy production, in california these days, it swings in a "duck shape" throughout the day. In the morning when people wake up, its kinda in the middle, the sun is at an angle and produces a little energy, but few also use much energy in the morning. The problem is in the noon, energy production peaks because max sun, but few use the electricity. So California must dump it somewhere or risk too much energy being on the grid and causing problems, and they often pay places like Arizona to take it from them. At night, people come home, the lights turn on, but panels arent producing anything, so demand spikes. The current way this is taken care of is by throttling power generation stations, but not all stations can be throttled easily. Natural gas stations are the easiest to crank up and down, but things like nuclear for example... its actually impossible to shut down a nuclear plant at one moment, shutdown takes weeks. And now we have this added layer of things like solar and wind depending wildly on conditions around the place generating power so its harder now. The ideal solution is energy storage, but despite what Ol' Musky says, batteries are still very inefficient and IMO a poor solution to the problem. Other methods aren't much better. Renewable brings its own challenges.

OspreyBravo18 There would be almost no effect if we're talking about the carbon emissions. recent studies show that if all of the world's countries were to simultaneously drop their production of carbon emissions right now by what I believe they said was 50% or something along those lines, that we would only see a drop of atmospheric carbon dioxide of around .08%. On top of this, Carbon dioxide is actually fairly good for the environment. Carbon dioxide DOES increase the temperature of the environment by a very slight margin, allowing plants enzymes to speed up, which, ironically, allows them to carry out photosynthesis more quickly, and in the process use up carbon dioxide. The abundance of co2 in the atmosphere helps the plants as well because it also allows them to carry out photosynthesis more frequently. this creates a cycle in which the plants use the carbon dioxide being created. And even if plants can't keep up with the co2, it won't matter because water vapor is the real culprit for global warming and cooling. Even big climate change supporters will tell you that water vapor is the biggest greenhouse gas. The reason that carbon dioxide doesn't have so much of an effect is that co2 reflects just as much heat out of the atmosphere as it traps in. In fact, during the ice age there is evidence that there was a lot of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere www.telegraph.co.uk/news/earth/environment/climatechange/4061092/Greenhouse-gases-could-have-caused-an-ice-age-claim-scientists.html Most scientists who are on the climate change train would claim that the environment would be hot and the surface would be cold, but this doesn't make clear sense, since the same scientists claim that smaller portions of co2 in our atmosphere would singificantly heat up our surface and our atmosphere. The much more likely scenario is that both the surface and the atmosphere were cold. the co2 would block out heat from getting in, and their would be less water vapor in the atmosphere because more of it than today would be on the surface as ice and snow. And even if their is some terrible global warming catastrophe, then we could fairly easily curb the problem with genetically modified plants. Scientists have already started working on trees that can do this, and I can't remember the exact name but I believe they've already got one that works fairly well.

I love Japan and living there, but the packaging is unreal. I get almost a whole trash bag filled when buying groceries for 1 week, if I didn't have to separate things into a gazillion different bags. They put a lot of "effort" in recycling and dividing trash, but there is no way to limit your trash. I would love to see a tax on packaging put to manufacturers, it might be the best thing for the country.

In the Netherlands you have to pay 3-25 cents for a plastic bag and sometimes that give you a paper bag instead. Or a €1 bag that you can return at any moment and get your money back. The same system has been used for many years for big plastic bottles and since this year also for small plastic bottles. Big plastic bottles cost 25 cents and small plastic bottles cost 15 cents. You can put them in a machine in grocery stores to get that money back after you used them. Also, plastic bags used to recycle plastic packaging are free in order to incentivize people to recycle plastic by filling up their regular trash bags less, saving them money. Theoretically people could use those bags to put groceries in as a loophole, but other people would notice that, so they don't do that to avoid the shame.

The hardest unpalatable truth about going green is Dont have children. A person can recycle, reuse, reduce, do everything great for the environment. Have one kid and Boom there goes all the efforts towards being green. Diapers, books, school bags, clothes, stationery, toys and the list goes on. That doesn't mean people shouldn't have children at all. But if there is anyone who says "I don't want children" let's not bully them or label them as selfish for their choices.

Here in Norway our electricity is generated ~95% by hydropower, in addition to that we are the country in the world with the most electric cars per capita. People tend to use electric cars because of all the benefits the government gives them such as free parking, free charging, low yearly fees and much more. We are not perfect when it comes to being eco friendly but other countries cloud learn a lot from us.

In Germany, we have that system of returning your bottle to the supermarket. You pay 25 Cents more, if you buy a bottle, but you get that money back, if you go, and return it. It's named „Pfand". It isn't only good to recycle, but there are also people, that are making their money out of returning bottles (usually in big cities), that are standing around, and that without the system would be ending up as trash in our environment

In the Netherlands and other parts of Europe we have a thing called "statiegeld", it roughly translates to "deposit", for every bottle you buy (plastic) you pay a small deposit for using the bottle, when you go grocery shopping the next day you can return the bottles and you'll get your deposit back. Almost all supermarkets also have a glass containers with a separate compartment for every colour of glass (green, clear and brown). The deposit encourages people to return these reusable bottles and it also helps companies to recycle them due to them being collected at a central-ish point, supermarkets. By the way, If you want to buy beer in the Netherlands you buy it in "een kratje", a crate, it also has deposit on it, this way the 24 bottles AND the crate get recycled, two big Dutch beer companies (Grolsch and Heineken) recently switched the production of their crates to be made out of recycled and recyclable materials, which is another step in a better direction. Although this sounds pretty good, we need to do a lot more to stop climate change all together.
