To fix the country's problems, you have to understand them.
Up next: The case for Bernie Sanders: bit.ly/2wdX38E
This video is one of a series in which Vox writers argue the cases for the leading Democratic candidates in the 2020 election. (Vox does not endorse individual candidates.)
The case for Bernie Sanders: • The case for Bernie Sa...
The case for Joe Biden: • The case for Joe Biden
The case for Elizabeth Warren: • The case for Elizabeth...
The case for Pete Buttigieg: • The case for Pete Butt...
And you can read our cases for all the candidates, including Mike Bloomberg and Amy Klobuchar, at vox.com/the-case-for
Update: Elizabeth Warren withdrew her candidacy on March 5, 2020: www.vox.com/policy-and-politi...
Elizabeth Warren is 70, but she’s a relative newcomer to politics. Before she became a US senator in 2012, she was a law professor. And in the early 2000s, she was driven by one question: Why, at a time when the economy seemed so good, were so many American families declaring bankruptcy?
The answers she found turned her into one of the country’s fiercest advocates for consumers. They helped change how we think about the economy itself. And, Vox’s Ezra Klein argues, it’s Warren’s understanding of America’s big, systemic problems that makes her uniquely qualified to be the next president.
So: What exactly is it that Elizabeth Warren understands? What kind of president would she be? And what does any of that tell us about how she would fare in a general election against Donald Trump?

This is funny how a person living 3000km for the USA like me has to care about US politics since it affects the world so much.

it's hilarious how they can simultaneously and knowingly be a superpower and at the same time pretend american decisions are only american in nature. if there was an american decision to go to full-scale war with another nation then that's a mobilisation of a force with a budget bigger than the next 10 biggest military's combined. if their economy tanks by a few percent that sends shockwaves around the world because that's how interconnected the world is

Yaria Samavan Carlan I was Warren supporter in 2016. Just like Bernie I wanted her to run. Instead she didn’t. Now all of the sudden she’s backing off progressive values, accepting superpacks, lying about Bernie; and has little to no support from minorities, independents, and Republicans. She’s simply not the Warren we all knew a year ago.

@@mrblock4 Warren IS for M4A but, again, process determines outcome. She knows that starting with M4A at the outset is a NON starter with the current Senate. She wants to cover as many people as possible as SOON as possible by having Congress pass a public option plan along with overturning a lot of Trumps executive orders that have made it hard to maintain and improve the ACA, and THEN push a M4A plan at the end of her first term. This two-step approach is an attempt to navigate current Senate rules and Senate politics. It also gives the Dems time to replace Rep Senators so we actually have the votes to pass M4A. She is a master strategist - she created a whole new federal agency and she wasnt even a politician at the time - she's got this.

Not being sassy I'm just curious, as a Warren supporter first and foremost would you vote for Bernie if she drops out or if you see no way for her to win? I'm wondering how many Warren supporters would actually go out to vote for Bernie in that case, cause the dynamic and rhetoric between them and their supporters has really been negative lately and I fear it's going to turn off some of her base (even tho I've read half of her supporters have more moderate candidates as their second choice, like Buttigieg or Klobuchar)

Also what do you think is her long game, what is she angling for? She says she could be the unity candidate in a possible brokered convention, but I don't see establishment superdelegates picking her if she's not like second in terms of pledged delegates... Gabriel Blais If you’re genuinely curious: If she does not win, I do have other selections in mind- no different than if I didn’t get my first pick in a university or college. Despite the debates and how... petty they can become, I think, as far as their views or principles, they align: they see a systemic issue originating from how our government is being handled- namely by unfit/corrupt politicians- and also wish to realign our country’s values based on principles that would empower the people. They both are interested in serving the people and preventing them from feeling disenfranchised by elitism, corporations, and being “conventional.” Both of them essentially flip a bird to conventional approaches (but neither are so unreasonable either to not be pragmatic about their stances on things). If you look at their history with how they’ve voted or what they support you see they’re not nearly as hawkish and belligerent to working alongside others- a fear that many Democrats have.

@@Miikhiel Thanks for your reply, I was genuinely curious and now I totally agree with you. People are scared both of them don't know how to compromise but pretty much everytime there has been an important vote where the dems needed Bernie or Warren's vote, even though it didn't align with their profound convictions, they voted for incremental progress cause some small change is still better than none. I would love to see both of them in the same administration; Idk how picking her for VP would fare with some Bernie supporters who seem to have cancelled her, but I think she would make a fantastic Treasury Secretary, and if she ever was first in the polls or delegates and Bernie wasn't as high I would vote for her (if I was an American, I'm from Canada)

Gabriel Blais I think part of the problem with our politics is we have a mentality of “winner takes all.” If I’m being perfectly honest, my confidence or vote for these candidates has /nothing/ to do with them personally. Two or three months ago I was in perfect agreement with you. Warren would have been a perfect presiding officer of the Senate (Vice President) and running mate to Bernie Sanders. But because of their private feud, neither one would be on the other's ticket if nominated. That ship has sailed; the bridge has been burnt. Now our only hope is in Bernie. Wrong and wrong again. She actually presented something workable on Medicare. Sanders's plan is ask for everything, and charge it to the national debt. That'll get him exactly nothing. Within 100 days of Warren becoming president, all citizens will be able to afford health insurance for no more than 5% of their income. In the 3rd year she will pass a Medicare for All bill that will be paid primarily by industry, so that middle class taxes do not go up.

@@omgahandlelol of course she deserves respect. Shes fought hard for working families and her achievements should be (and are always) recognized but I would argue that the spat with Sanders was not justified. He had never came at her personally demeaning her character like she tried to do to him (which backfired) and has kept his criticism focused on facts and on policy. As far as endorsements look she's been a a much stronger defender of Klobuchar than her ideological compatriot and longstanding "friend" Sanders. At least recently. I mean she's lied about his position on superdelegates most recently and even before that lied about him having support from SuperPacs something SHE in fact has broken her promise on when he hasn't. But my point was before where I was confident she would stand by the progressive movement and side with Sanders I'm 100% convinced she has been politically calculating as opposed to resolute and consistent. The fact that shes going to the convention and abandoning hope of winning over voters in favor of superdelegates breaks my heart. She was my #2 and I felt VERY betrayed by her. From what she displayed she's just as likely to endorse biden or pete over sanders. Whatever is politically expedient.

Chloe W on the surface, they both have similar solutions but they're both coming at the problem from different angles and both have different political philosophies. Warren believes you can work within the system to remove the money and corruption that are gunking up the gears in congress. That's why she talks about structural change. Bernie, on the other hand, believes the problem is a politically disconnected population and a completely broken system. He's a political outsider running a populist movement - much like Trump did. That's why I think Bernie will win over Liz. But I also think they're both right in their own ways and agree more with Liz's views of corruption and broken processes in DC stopping any legislative process.

Deeply Disappointed in Buttigieg and Warren. A year ago very supportive of these two progressives who supported: - No Super PACs/Dark Money - No Super Delegates overruling Popular Vote - No watering down on Medicare for All Not only did both reverse on above but this past weekend both campaigns admitted there primary goal now is to stop a progressive from getting a majority thus allowing super-delegates to give to Bloomberg/Biden at convention. :(

Despite the spat between Bernie and Warren I’m still hoping for a unity ticket against Trump. I don’t like her campaign advisers telling her to run center but I still think she is genuine with her policies since she has also been consistent although not as much as Bernie’s. It’s still my dream since 2016 for them to run on a ticket.

If we're going to get rid of the electoral college (We probably should), then we should also get rid of the Delegates that act in the same way during our primary process. Just saying this to point out that Bernie was the only candidate to say he was down for that during a recent debate.
