Thousands of India’s farmers have set up camp in Delhi.
Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
In November 2020, thousands of farmers marched from the northern states of India to Delhi to protest farming reforms passed by Prime Minister Modi’s government. Those protests have continued throughout the month of December and show little sign of letting up. The farmers have set up camp in and around the capital city to pressure the government to repeal the laws, but the government won’t budge.
The government says these new laws will modernize farming by liberalizing the industry, but India’s farmers say it will be their downfall. Under these new policies, farmers will have fewer government protections and will likely lose the government-regulated markets and prices they have relied on for decades.
To make matters even more difficult, all this is happening as India’s farmers grapple with a shrinking share of the economy that has contributed to a suicide crisis around the country.
To understand the three farming reforms and why they have driven so many farmers into the streets, as well as the history behind the problems farmers have been facing for decades, watch the video above.

As the first impact of the farm laws, Reliance Retail sealed rice deal with Karnataka state farmers, and paid them above MSP price, offering Rs 1,950 per quintal of Sona Masoori rice, which is Rs 82 more than the minimum support price (MSP). Google it, it's there. This is good news for farmers and shows the new farm laws are in their benefit. So I still don't understand why the Punjab state farmers are protesting.

Most do not stick to MSP set by the Govt. They buy real cheap & sell much higher in the open Market. Obviously, their profits is what keeps them afloat. Govt set MSP will not get them much . *3* MSP - It was never a law & so has it not been included in the current Farm bills

A protest against the new Citizenship act (which discriminated against Muslims) by the government that faced backlash from all over India even by the unaffected. Protests started in November of 2019 when the bill was drafted and we has to dismantle everything in March of this year because of Covid otherwise the Protest would still be going on. I don't think you understood the point that was made - the decrease in the farmers share of GDP is because of the rise in other sectors such as service and IT and medicine and technology as you pointed out correctly ( the video says the same thing)- this means that the economy has grown and so has inflation BUT the farmers have not grown competitively - therefore they are struggling to make ends meet!

@@vegeteriancannibal Bruh, farming in the US is a fairly small part of our GDP, having a diversified economy is a good thing. The market hasn't shrunk but expanded beyond the capability of current farming in India. Small scale, low acreage farming is inherently inefficient and causes food the be more expensive. The deregulation isn't bad, and the farmers can always join a co-op and use that as a "union" of sorts to get good prices. Of course, this means that less people will likely farm and there will be higher acreage, lowering the prices of food. In the long run its a good thing, though I think it should've happened earlier.

India is still a developing country and much of the population lives on a below average wage, especially the farmers, so this new system won’t work now, but, when the people, including the farmers, gets richer in the future, this bill will be needed and should be implemented then, not right now.

The same fate happened to Australian farmers, deregulation of the dairy market in the 2000s with milk prices, the small size farms could not make ends meet against the big corporations who have dominance on pricing. From 88% in Victoria state in 1983 with deregulation in the 2000s to just 33 % now as dairy farms collapsed. Minimum Support Price also is not mentioned in the law bills, so it can turn too horrible for farmers.

@@rightlibertarian8355 I was speaking about changes in the farming market as I for example used the past examples of deregulation in the Australian milk production market in early 2000'a. It can be safely applied to India. In Australia, before the deregulation laws, there were a lot more milk-producing small farms, but they went bust when the deregulation laws were confirmed as big corporations had unfair dominance considering the three new laws for India. The same thing is going to happen in India with small farms be it dairy, fruit, or vegetable growers for example as big corporations will take over and small number farmer count will shrink as in the first example.

The arthias (dealers) group up in each mandi and decide a common highest bid, above which no other arthia will go. Ground reality is very different then theory. The arthias are bullies. And their is no real oversight in the mandis. The people who are meant to actually overlook the functioning of mandi and protect the farmers do the exact opposite. The main reason this isn't cost effective is because the Green Revolution and globalization shifted the Indian agriculture market away from from subsistence farming towards a predominantly export market (big emphasis on export grains). Because of this, farmers and communities can't survive on what they grow and there is less contribution to local economies. Small land holdings aren't inherently uneconomic but globalization has made it so unfortunately

If more corporates get in contracts and we get more contracts I don't have to worry about spoilage or storage and loss would be less. There are so many loopholes in this video. Being an Indian, I am just pointing out a few: 3:27 - Bihar's agricultural growth has been greater than Punjab post-2006 reforms. 3:50 - Indian economy has boosted overall, reducing agriculture's share. Agricultural produce has been constantly increasing. 5:10 - It is my humble opinion that corporates should not be demonized. Indian agriculture is in dire need of innovation and infrastructure that these corporates can invest in. 6:04 - There is a provision in the Act that if prices increase by over 50%, govt can intervene But, I do agree that it is a very complex issue, and my reasons might be flawed. Feel free to reply if you have other arguments.

I don't understand what's wrong with VOX. They make quality content but it lacks lot of facts. First of all Mandis are already corrupted and farmers won't get fair pricing. Deregulating it encourages startups and new companies to give fair pricing and farmer can get a fair deal. These protests are mostly made by the middlemen and mandi influenced farmers. My uncle grows wheat it's been decades that he got fair pricing. He says farm laws benefits him a lot. I'm happy to these implemented cuz he benefits from it.

Mandis are regulated by the Govt. Then how they will collapse if the Govt ensures and agrees on giving written assurance on MSP? 50% of India is directly or indirectly linked with agriculture then why would the Govt take harsh steps in favour of Corporates? They would in return get shortage in Tax collections if they do so. Also not to mention that such reforms were being waited for too long, the Congress has it in manifesto for 2019 General elections then why they are opposing it now?
@PunjabiOrlando
@PunjabiOrlando 3 жыл бұрын
@@eternalks6872 Can you please clarify 1. Agriculture is a state subject as part of the Indian Constitution. So why is the government using provision 33 in the concurrent list to pass this bill? 2. Ordinance is used during unprecedented times like war why the government brought these bills as an ordinance when the parliament was not in session. What was the urgency? 3. What is the need for another parallel market to the existing APMC mandis? If you think APMC mandis are inefficient with arthiyas, bring reforms to the current system to streamline instead of introducing a private market. 4. Government is saying we are not taking away APMC and MSP but a new private marketplace where you can sell anywhere in India. When Jio came into the market, they offered SIMs free of cost. After finishing the competition, they raised rates. Similarly, Jio finished BSNL. Current APMC and MSP are waiting to meet the same fate. In the first few years, corporates will pay a higher price than MSP. This will make Mandis and MSP redundant and finally going away like BSNL. Now corporates will define the price. This happened in Bihar in 2006 to give you an example. 5. BJP, in their 2014 and 2019 manifesto, promised to implement the Swaminathan report, which will allow farmers to get C2+50% on 23 crops. What happened to that manifesto. 6. What are the regulations of the new digital exchange they proposed in Bill#1. Details are missing. Who will manage this exchange? E.g., the Stock market has SEBI as a regulatory agency. Which agency will drive this new market? What are the rules and regulations? 7. Bill#2 - In contract farming, corporates can mortgage farmer’s land. Why? 8. Farmers can't go to civil court in case of a dispute. Why? 9. Bill #3 - Essential commodity act. Now the hoarding is allowed, which was illegal before. Since corporates are already building weather-controlled silos to store grains and vegetables, as a simple demand-supply economy, corporates will create artificial demand, and prices of commodities will go up. We have seen this as an example of onion prices going up in the past. 10. With unlimited storage, this will allow corporates to export, taking supply away from the local market again, making prices go up. There are no regulations around buffer size for corporates to maintain. 11. If the government defines MSP at which farmer can sell their crop, why they don't determine the maximum selling price for corporates. In Madhya Pradesh, potatoes sold for 8 rupees were sold in the malls for 80 rupees. 10x markup. Let the government say you can only sell for 2-3x. The regulations should apply to both farmers and corporates. Why corporates get preferential treatment?

The farming went from 50% of economy to 15%, this is a result of growth in other sectors like IT and manufacturing (to name a few) not that farming has declined in contrast it might have increased in overall due to modern farm tech.
@simonsiddique
@simonsiddique 3 жыл бұрын
I think he they meant by 15% is that, farming couldn't keep up with growth of other sectors. But as other sectors grew, the peoples of other sectors are spending more money and increasing prices of all goods. As farmers are lagging behind, they don't have the same amount of buying power they had with almost the same amount of money they earned in the 60s.

@DontBotherMe83

No here is the correct list: 1. MSP won’t be supported 2. Commission agents (and levys that state imposes to skim off the proceeds) 3. Mono-cropping to just wheat and rice that have highest MSP set. 4. Lack of industry in Punjab compared to other states 4. Decreasing revenue contribution of Punjab to center kitty as farm income is not taxed. Other states and center like the farm bills: 1. Center does not need to support MSP for ever for unlimited and ever increasing produce from Punjab, Haryana, AndhraPradesh etc. 2. Other states contribution of industrial tax revenue and sales taxes to the center kitty is not being returned back 3. Other states suffered poverty for long only to see center just eating away and not returning money for projects and development. 4. Punjab farmers are supported at the expense of other workers while not contributing to tax revenue. 5. Too much produce than what India consumes. Center does not know what to do by purchasing this much. Prices are low because of oversupply.

@@vineethpallakkat4294 the thing is, the presence of the regulated markets is imperative for the entire deregulation to work in a way which will potentially increase competition, therby increasing the offer prices from both the regulated as well as the private players. The problem is, a huge part of the protesters' mass seems to assume that the regulated mandis will themselves disappear, which is not at all true. They will still be having the ability to sell the produce to these mandis at the minimum prices. The problem with the mandis today is that they are so corrupt and manipulative that the officials literally take over a hundred kilos of farm produce alone for "sampling purposes", let alone the fact that the farmers have to pay other processing and transportation fee to the loaders. All of this is avoided by selling private, as the firms not only pay for all of the services associated with loading and shipment, but also provide the farmers with their own seeds as per their requirements of quality. The entirety of the argument of this protesting sphere, as far as I am aware, is the regulated market becoming a failure. However do note that the government (literally the Prime Minister too at this point), has come out and denied any such closure of the mandis. EDIT: the guy above knows that such videos are only to get you started with the issue. They in no way resemble any truth of the matter, atleast not in its entirety.
