Thanks so much for downloading this fantastic depiction of a historic journey that tragically not only led to the death of so many innocent victims, but also played a key role in the Holocaust itself, as the murderous Nazi explains to the captain towards the end of the film. What a great collection of famous actors and great acting, none better than Max Von Sydow and Ben Gazzara, who despite being Italian, looks very Jewish and plays his role with such powerful emotion that you are convinced he is fighting for the lives of 937 of his brothers and sisters.

The particular war may not be repeated, but the persecution and genocide continues in many countries unabated. The substance of this video is happening every day in multiple countries. Just a few days ago Afghanistan fell and there are many people seeking to flee to avoid the consequences. But flee to WHERE who wants them? Who wants Palestinians, Syrians, Jews, Muslims, Lebanese, Libyans, and so many countless others? No nation that I know of.

Gotta love Oskar Werner with a totally ludicrous moustache playing Professor Kreisler. A professor? Bloody hell and back, he looks like a multimillionaire industrialist, opera singer, or movie star. With an A-list movie star wife (Faye Dunaway) in tow. Not sure why they have Hemmings play a medical doctor -- none whatsoever. Paul Koslo and Jonathan Price played the homosexual anti-Nazis who were already in a concentration camp. Sadly, they both died at Auschwitz. Superb performance by the pair of them. Malcolm McDowell was superb, as was of course Max Von Sydow as the Captain. Denholm Elliott played Admiral Canaris, a brief appearance but powerful.

It's really shocking how much hate is in the comments section. So many people are still missing the point. If you can still hate, or blame, or judge any group of people for any reason then you've forgotten what's fundamental. We are all human beings and we will only survive if we work together. It's a relief that I come from a place where hate isn't on the national agenda, or the cultural agenda, or simmering away in the background somewhere. It's a mercy that I haven't been brainwashed into believing that any sort of hatred or prejudice is in any way justifiable. It never, ever is.

There were other ships carrying Jews from Hamburg to South America, one left in 1938 which was supposed to go to Argentina and Chile, but only got as far as Uruguay - no-one was allowed to disembark in those countries, it then went to Havana, and again no disembarkation allowed, USA & Canada also refused, and only a few allowed off at England & Belgium. I faintly remember seeing this on TV, probably early 80's. Based on the amazing true story of the 1939 voyage of the German-flagged MS St. Louis, which departed from Hamburg carrying 937 Jews from Germany, bound for Cuba. The passengers, having seen and suffered rising anti-Semitism in Germany, realized this might be their only chance to escape. The passengers become aware that their passage was planned as an exercise in Nazi propaganda -Nazi Germany had never intended that they disembark in Cuba. Rather, they were to be set up as pariahs, to set an example before the world. As a Nazi official states in the film, when the whole world has refused to accept the Jews as refugees, no country can blame Germany for their fate.

One criticism about the gentleman who introduced the film. The St. Louis was not an "SS" (steam-ship) - it was an "MV" (motor vessel). An SS was propelled by oil-burned boilers that heated water turning it into steam to provide energy to the propellers. An MV ship burned diesel fuel directly to do it. All ships today are "MV's."

It was no shame for Cuba, they had taken in some 350,000 refugees from European fascism in the preceding years, mainly from the Spanish Civil War but also from Italy, Germany and Austria including Jews. Unlike those who came from Spain and who settled and made Cuba their home Jews mainly used Cuba as a short term place to stay until they could get into the US. 350,000 Refugees was no small number either given that Cuba's population then was around 5 million people. They were full, much like Britain is today. The real shame lies with the US and Canada both of whom could easily have accommodated them but then again who wanted Jews back then? They were seen pretty much like Muslims are today by many people who feared extremism which in the case of Jews meant Bolshevism so no shame at all.

Only the Philippines got balls in accepting persecuted Jewish People during WWII.... Pres. Quezon doesn't mind what Hitler may reactions but he still choose what is right...and the right thing was to provide sanctuary to those persecuted people....Hats off Pres. All the lives lost in the camps was and still is a tragedy. It breaks a persons heart, weighing it down with profound sadness. Still worse is that we do it over and over, in any country, on several continents, and the cry of anger never quits. I don't think, rather have come to know that man Cannot rule man in a just and decent way. It's beyond our ability to act toward and show others what we believe we deserve in our life from others. We have forgotten the Golden Rule, "treat others as you would want them to treat you". I'm sure that in all religions there is a similar rule.

@@kazabushy Australian answer at Evian conference in1938 when the plight of the German Jews and Austria’ was discussed - was as followers - Her majesty’s government of Australia hasn’t got a racial problem and are not desirous to import one . In other words- no . At that time Australia- that huge rich continent had only 7 million people . A few thousand Jews from Germany that managed to get in made an enormous contribution in arts , science , business , absolutely remarkable if one think about their small number . How selfish racist and callous was Australian government attitude. In Yad Vashem museum in big letter there are responses of all the governments . With the doe small exceptions only Dominican Republic agreed to take big number , all the other refused . So the Australian’ s government answer is there in big letter . Very shameful

@@bellaadamowicz8380 2 Australian representatives attended that conference in addition to 31 other countries represented. There was no dismissal of any ship of any refugees here- and I have researched. What this poster wrote was based on what a random man said to her and died. I've looked into archives including the archives of refugees in Germany and Austria since it sparked my interest and horrified me. But, there is no record of any ship coming to Australia. We were on the verge of war. Prove me wrong. Why are you angry at me?? And what country are you from pray tell? A perfect country who took all pre war refugees with a perfect parliament no doubt. Spurt your anger elsewhere thank you. Are you going to also blame me for the British invasion of Australia in 1788 and their killing Aborigines too? She said „My father was hunted by the gestapo” - like many Jews in the 30s he was ordered to be sent to a hard labour camp in nazi ruled germany and clearly suffered a mental breakdown from hiding away for 2 yrs knowing he would likely never return from being sent camp if the gestapo found him.
