Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
"TERROR ON DINOSAUR ISLAND"
Season Two, Episode 14
First aired 26 December, 1965 on ABC-TV, USA
Guest star: Paul Carr
Admiral Nelson and Chief Starkey are marooned on an island inhabited by dinosaurs.
Paul Carr appeared in many TV shows of the 1960's. He was "Clark" in a couple of Voyage episodes from season one, then appeared as "Benson" in this episode.
This video is a recording from a recent HDTV broadcast of a newly transferred and restored film. The episode has been shortened by the distributor to the current standard length for one-hour episodes through the use of cuts and increased frame rate. Additional audio and video augmentation by TooleMan TV, 2024.

I like how the dinosaurs are just background for a character drama about an angry man who has a grudge against Crane.

It's possible that some unusual Dino footage here might also come from an early Irwin Allen movie, "Animal World". If this is so, it's footage rarely used anywhere else.

Carr is a wonderful supporting player. Voyage however always had "Clark" (season 1) and "Benson" (here, just 1 second year story) shown as a really troubled fellow. He might have been a regular early on as "Clark"but according to Del Monroe, there would only be so many "billets" available on the Seaview. Star Trek wasn't all that much more accommodating...as "Kelso", Carr is set up for what's coming when Gary Mitchell looks down on him....then at the end of the episode "Kelso" is killed by "Mitchell". Buck Rogers treated him better. He's a regular bridge officer on Buck's starship in the second season.

Gotta comment from an industry POV. 1. Expected to simply satisfy the 10 year old in me. Instead was surprised at the good writing and excellent direction. Seems when Irwin Allen decided to re-use his stock footage he chose among his best to do it; the script is tight and the dialogue convincing, avoiding cliches like "This island has dinosaurs on it" though Admiral Nelson can't tell a stegosaurus from a komodo dragon. Director Leonard Horn, who did some outstanding Outer Limits work, demonstrates an unusual deftness with both his camera and actor direction, effortlessly sweeping the camera about solid performances. 2 Irwin Allen stock footage extravaganza! Drowning men from a black and white episode tinted red, brontosaurus from his The Animal World and lizards from his The Lost World (during the lizard fight you can hear a scream from Jill St. John.) The difference in film stocks between the movies and the TV show are apparent but not objectionable for the time. A serious solid episode with terrific production values from the time. The upconversion is the usual vivid and razor sharp outstanding quality. You are doing audiences a genuine sppreciated service, Toolman. Please keep them coming!

Not just Allen's Lost World lizards. The brontosaurs mechanical neck and head seen underwater is from Allen's dinosaur segment of his mid-1950's theatrical documentary The Animal World who had stop motion by Willis O'Brien and the master and my old childhood hero and later friend Ray Harryhausen. I don't recall the stop motion in the show. IMO that was a mistake because while the Warner Brothers studio dinosaur model were not up to standard, Ray's animation was and is terrific for the time. Anyway the bronto shows that Allen owned the footage and using the lizard fight instead if the stop motion fight was a big mistake unless the color film stocks color could not be matched to the show, which is much better here than even the DVDs

I have wonderful memories of me and my dear departed father watching these every night when they were new on our new little "color" TV in the kitchen. Very nostalgic. I always loved Richard Basehart. (PS I do wonder why the Skipper couldn't have waited a few more seconds to try to save Grady, but then there wouldn't have been a story!)

Chief Francis Ethelbert Sharkey. I guess this was his first episode? He replaced Henry Kulky who looked like Tor Johnson, and played Chief Curley Jones. Toolman how do you do it, how!
@TooleManTV
@TooleManTV 6 ай бұрын
Blood, sweat, and tears - that's what it takes! As for Sharkey, he was introduced in "Jonah and the Whale," the first episode of season two. I loved Chief Curly Jones. He reminded me of Curly of the Three Stooges, and he provided some comic relief to the show. There's a great scene of him and some crewmen looking for the runaway robot in "The Indestructible Man." They start down a hallway, see the robot coming at them, and Chief says, "As you were, men!" Then they all run back and slam the hatch behind them!

Seems like a grand intro for the (new)chief, but a s noted he was with season 2 from the start. Inside news says that RB and Terry Becker were great pals. Thus what some have noted here to be a partially ad libbed discourse between them. Becker had a dispute with Irwin and supposedly wanted to turn in his resignation, but changed his mind. "The Sky's On Fire" was supposedly to be the last Sharkey episode.

Yep! The sound editor should've been fired. By the way, this footage is from Irwin Allen's movie, "The Lost World" with David Hedison in the cast. Stephanie Powers was the woman screaming in the movie. It first appeared on Voyage in season one's "Turn Back the Clock," and Bat Girl Yvonne Craig was the screamer. In this episode, maybe Sharkey was letting his feminine side out?

Originally I assumed the scream came frim Arlene Dahl in Journey to the Centre of the Earth the 1956 film but now I realize it must have been the Lost World 1961. Irwin Allen seemed to love dinosaurs and volcanoes. Very enjoyable. There's also dinosaurs in an episode of Jungle Jim called Jungle Manhunt.

Checklist for the title: there is an island. There are ‘dinosaurs’ on said island. Dinosaurs can be terrifying. Verdict: title holds up to the story. 😁 I am always in awe in how casual Nelson is when he pilots the Flying Sub. Just slouching there, not a care in the world until the sparking caulk goes off in the electrical panels. Hey Sharky had the auto-release parachute! His ‘rip cord’ handle wasn’t pulled! So where is that big tentacle that’s slamming the Seaview from? Is it a prop left over from the movie (the squid on the sea floor scene) or something else? Thank you once again for your hard work!
