It's not that underrated. It performed well in syndication in the 70s and there has always been a fanbase for the show that for decades published fanzines, etc. There was even a fan group in the UK that held conventions and maybe still does. The Gold Key comic book adaptation of the show commands pretty hefty prices on the market.

The Seaview had a long history of taking on mysterious, unknown, and highly dangerous cargo that jeopardized the lives and safety of its crew. This is something that the U.S. Navy would never do on its nuclear submarines. But hey, we needed a new storyline each week for the tv show, right? Mummy? Why not? Seaview had android duplicates, a psychotic clown, an alien in cryogenic tube, sea monsters, some lady aging fast to a crone, there was even an android admiral that we didn't know about until it got shot in the head.

Any criticisms or jokes about the special effects are moot. The actors were totally committed to their roles and the tension was created by their skill and the camera work and the music. Remember, Shakespeare's actors didn't even have sets and had minimal props and still managed to mesmerize their audiences with just his words and their skills. Now, we have lost so much of our imaginations and ability to become engrossed in a story and need lots of computer-generated effects to keep us distracted, but we don't really enjoy the drama the same way we used to.

I loved this show as a kid but it always amazed me how the most advanced sub on the planet always ended up on sea floor. Should have been called “Crashing to the Bottom of the Sea” Once again captain Crane is possessed. Also a mummy that can barely move, gets around the sub without being seen. Nobody wants to go to sick bay. And just a few sparks make the Seaview rock and roll at least once per episode. Great show. Oh one last thing. The mummy has a useless arm until he fights off three crewmen. For just a moment it has two very strong arms to pick up a crewman up off the floor.

Ah, 1960s tv! The age of fantasmagorical " scientific" based entertainment! "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea," "Lost in Space," "Incredible Voyage," and of courese, "Star Trek" TOS. I've watched a few of these episodes on KZfaq and have noticed a pattern: the crew encounter marvels (mermaids, gillmen, mummies, etc) and nor real explainations or information to give some depth to the plot. Each episode seems to end with the admiral saying, "Well, I guess it's a mystery that we will never know." But, it was the 60s and it was escapist tv, so what should i expect?😊

Well even at the time, people would complain about the all too often lowbrow approach in these Irwin Allen shows and in fact Isaac Asimov wrote an article for TV Guide especially singling out his shows. There was an article in a scifi fanzine entitled 'The Curse Of Irwin Allen'. The lead actor here, Basehart, supposedly made a comment to the press about how the scripts were written: 'They flush the toilet and the script appears in Irwin Allen's office' . Nevertheless, Allen's usual retort was 'Logic? Don't bother me with logic!' However this show nevertheless delivered the goods in terms of raw pulpy entertainment and I remain a huge Voyage fan. To address your comment, actually this is the only episode where Nelson says at the end 'it's a mystery'. But granted given all the aliens, entities, etc. that were constantly infiltrating the Seaview, at some point the US government would have established a 'X Files' type special department as a countermeasure.

Irwin's critics who claim not to respect his Critters are definitely off base, the craftsmanship is first rate for nonCGI creatures (yes, production pace might affect some suits. But overall, far better than the critics have said. 60s creatures from Outer Limits through Irwin's series were very inventive, comparable to anything on the big screen.

Typical fun pulpy later season Voyage episode enhanced by the wonderful (Emmy winning) cinematography and extensive borrowing from the 20th Fox music library (Herrrmann, etc.) Of course the story is inconsistent. This primitive mummy staggers around growling and tears up circuitry yet is cunning enough to take over Crane's mind so he can sabotage the mission. However perhaps we could retcon the whole thing by saying that the 'entities' hinted at in the earlier episode 'Day Of Evil' were actually controlling the mummy as well.

For a Later-In-Season-3 episode this one has a lot going for it. As you noted, the music scoring. I've found that the pacing and various attentions to detail worked out very well here. Two "extra" crewmen (including ongoing extra Pat Culliton) get speaking parts. Lighting effects, too, are well crafted. IMO a little gem from this controversial season.

Mr Peterbs. Thank you for that wonderful report. I often find myself wishing I were a Hollywood type with access to it all, in order to catalog Voyage's rich community of "extra" players. One can go to Trek's Memory Alpha for much detail on the "extras" (though sometimes you even have to dig a bit there). Popular priced cinematography magazines started to give Voyage background people more attention in recent years. Please give Pat Culliton and Derrik Lewis my best and my thanks. And once more thank you for your contributions on these forums. I've benefitted considerably from them.

@@AdmiralNelson1000 You're welcome. Maybe you're not on Facebook but there are at least two large Voyage fan groups on there. I tend to stick with the smaller ones these days. Derrik and I have been trying to get together for lunch or dinner for yeas now. I hope it comes true soon.

@mrpeterbs. Thank you for the response. Again much appreciated. I should know this by now, but do you know the Music that comes along with the Day Earth /Still score here -- the more haunting, exotic score that opens with the episode 's title and writer/director credits? It sounds like it was lifted from those old 50s spear, temple and sandal movies with Yvonne DeCarlo or Debra Paget.

Now the question is, how did they get the sarcophagus in the hatch of the flying sub when it is so big? Oops! At 13:00 the mummy opens the door hatch by spinning the latch, just like he knows how. He did not have that technology and knowledge back then. Another goof in the plot.

You are unbelievable. Does the HD broadcasts on MeTV look somewhat as good? Aren't these films subject to copyright issues. If these were in 1080 P would they look better? You have a real talent that could have made you millions in Hollywood as a HD consultant, or re issuing your own line of classic shows. That was one silly looking Mummy!

This shuffling, slow mummy hauls its gimp leg around like it's about to crumble to dust at any moment. Then suddenly is all fast and athletic when fighting two guys! The instant the threat is dealt with, it's back to the zombie drag-leg. And killing an undead, supernatural force that reads minds (to know what all this modern stuff does) and exerts mind control, with some electricity? Why, I this kind of scenario the juice should be more likely to bestow it even more power. That "Some things are better left unexplained" at the end. No kidding! How do you explain all the stupidity in this one? The things that kept me on the edge of my seat as a kid are sure idiotic now.

@@billhosko7723 All of us here wasting time watching KZfaq videos, if we're over 15 years old, could rightfully be admonished to "gettalife." 😉 And how is expressing some honest and valid observations and opinions being a troll? I thought trolls were just shit disturbers, being controversial only to get a rise out of people. That ain't me. The world would be a mighty boring place if we all thought and felt the same way. Indeed, as General Patton had once written, "If everyone is thinking the same thing, no one is thinking." Cheers!
