Some of the sounds that were encoded on the Voyager Golden Record which recently (kind of) left our solar system.

04:18 the last voice - saying 'hello from the childen of planet earth' is Carl Sagan's son Nick (age 6 at the time of recording) the entire project was given to Carl Sagan almost as an afterthought, with only 6 weeks before it had to be completed, to record 25 of the worlds most used languages, and have everyone available to record them at the same time, on the same day. so it was a hell of a feat that he managed to assemble 55 instead of the initial 25 requested, even so he regretted the omission of languages like Swahili, now if i asked you to assemble 55 different language speakers at one place at 10am - 6 weeks from today..could you do it? ..oh and you cant use the internet or a cell-phone.

You deserve more likes. Do you have a link to this story? Sounds fascinating. Did Carl Sagan also record the rest of the golden disc’s content like the sounds of rain, animals, and machines as well?
@richardodonoghue4 жыл бұрын
@@AlexRN voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/golden-record/ short answer ..yes but not necessarily carl personally as he was just the chairman of the project and ultimately selected the content...sounds, music,pictures, and the greetings, he was however solely in charge of the greetings. here is a link to nick sagan later recounting the story of his involvement agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1002/2013EO400004

Well being that this was during the Cold War, where the world could've ended in a moment's notice. And yet, in contradiction to that very fact, humanity from all over the world, worked together to try and just say something simple and gentle, "Hello" from 55 languages.

Lmao yeah. Ironically the man in the Turkish recording isn't Turkish. I do know the backstory to that specific line as well: It's actually a quote from Turkish poet Behçet Kemal Çağlar who would say this exact sentence ("Türkçe konuşan arkadaşlarımız, sabah şerifleriniz hayrolsun") to his foreign co-workers at Robert College (a prestigious high school in Istanbul) where he was a teacher. The voice belongs to Professor Peter Kuniholm, who was one of his co-workers and being a lover of Turkish land and culture (apparently) decided to add this to the Golden Record.

The greeting in Turkish, my language, includes a joke: ""Sayın Türkçe bilen arkadaşlarımız / Dear friends who understand Turkish" I liked this little element of humour very much. Obviously, the aliens don't know Turkish, but if they somehow decipher the record, it will mean that they do, at least from that moment on, understand Turkish :) Probably the first Earth joke the aliens will hear is through my language! :) I wonder whose idea this was; but well done...

I think it has to do with the fact that so many people from so many different cultures came together to make these recordings, so we can send the recordings to space in hopes that something more advanced than us will find it, and confirm that we are not alone. To add onto this, there's a sense of vulnerability to this. Not only are so many people basically calling out into the infinite darkness of our Galaxy, but there's always the undertone of we may all be gone by the time this reaches anything at all.
