In the very north-east of Europe, on the border of Russia, lies the small country of Estonia. Per capita, Estonia has the most start-ups; internet access is considered a human right and all Estonians have free wifi.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992, independent Estonia had a very young government. The country decided to become the first e-society in the world: government services, education and health care are all online; government spending is transparent and everyone owns their own data. However, this digital development makes the country vulnerable to cyber attacks. In 2007, the first cyber war was fought in Estonia. Since then the country has been a forerunner in cyber security.
In London we meet the very first Estonian e-resident, journalist Edward Lucas. We also meet an Iranian-American Skype worker who signs all his contracts with a digital signature which will soon be acknowledged in the entire EU. Featuring: Edward Lucas (journalist, UK), Hamid Tahsildoost (Skype), Toomas Henrik Ilves (president, Estonia), Kristo Käärmann (Transferwise), Slim Sikkut (ICT councillor, Estonia) and captain Uko Valtenberg (chief cyber range, Estonian Defence Forces).

JImi, you don't have a clue what a buffon and disgrace this american estonian president was really. His presidency ended up in shameful stories and he moved out straight away back to USA, where he belongs, so it is a shame for Estonia really. Other stories is about money and his ex-wife. While a lot a good stuff have been done by government, techinical and other, Estonia is still pointless country, where no economy really and nothing to do for you personal development. It is a village with 1mln of people and touristic spot now.industry is ruined and only some kind of IT outsourcing could be set up, that's for sure.

The FEES for my Company and Driving Licence as well as My VISA in Canada, which validate me as well, are much, much lower and are actually reasonable, with same benefits - all over the world… Economy based only on electronic software and hardware and electricity, is a very risky way to conduct long term business, but as a fast lane for sharing information or capital, its risks are lower, and the way is more proficient - because the risks of power failure and or cyber interjections plus data/records loss is minimized.

a bit overblown IMO ... all those statements like extending your presence, validating in internet... come on any online bank lets you do operations from anywhere in the world, taxes and other operations can be done online for lot of countries. For example with your national ID in germany or simply with a digital certificate which is much older tech you can do all sort of online services without the need to call yourself e-resident :P. Nothing more than good advertisement for their country though.

Mean while they are ignoring their environment. I see so many spaces there for Food Forests. Where are all of the trees, bushes, berry bushes, flowers. They can become as advanced as they want to but without biodiversity incorporated into their cities... the future will be grim. To me I see a bunch of children pretending to be grown up. The buildings give me the creeps... so characterless, so cold. I couldn't work in this environment.

What's this bollox about 'only way to authenticate is via estonian residency' - anyone can do all the kindergarten stuff of signing documents and hashing them such that the document can only have been created by your own ID, the only thing is that Estonian govt has woken up and learnt to spell gpg or pgp (yes they're /almost/ the same) so that their departments can follow an identity index and authenticate the core ID so that all the follow-on signatures and hashes are then definitively the same (already verified/authenticated) ID. It's only been around since the 90s ... As for saying it's 'better' than a self created one is a matter of degree because the only reason an identity matters is ones history, past achievements and consistent integrity, an Estonian ID is no more trustworthy to me, in fact its massively LESS trustworthy if it's only recently been created - an Estonia ID that's six months old is worth almost nothing (at least to me and probably to anyone capable of analytical thought). On the other hand, a so-called 'random joe-blogs' ID that has been consistently signing valid legitimate helpful responses and carrying out honest dealings with multiple folk for five or ten years has a record I will trust - I don't care what his/her 'wetware' government identity is, I care about his or her record. The only difference between the free-standing reputation based Crypto Identities, and the government centred one, and this is the reason these folk are so desperately pretend that the Estonian system is massively 'safer' is that under their preferred setup the government has central access to the data and can statistically analyse it all and use that analysis to manipulate the populace.

Most of these start-ups milk the government for funding as long as possible and then either - go bankrupt or move HQ out of Estonia. Who loses? The Estonian taxpayer and companies which don't receive any government funding (me). This is also why some Estonians are leaving Estonia permanently.

Their electronic residence card is simply a case of e-bureaucracy. I got one and it never worked (not compatible with this browser, not compatible with that computer and so it goes; if you are an apple user just forget it) and nobody could help me. It is a fallacy to believe that once you digitise something all problems disappear, on the contrary. I learned the hard way that behind a super modernised facade you deal with entrenched Soviet style bureaucracy, utterly hostile to the user.

Sounds like you're a beginner when it comes to computers but yes, it doesn't work as well as it should - multiple browsers either don't work or have severe issues. What f'ing Soviet style bureaucracy are you talking about? You go to the support forum and the employees or anyone else will assist you. I've been to Greece, homeland of unnecessary bureaucracy and corruption.
