Yi is a Chinese mountain tribe. They live in a region that, in earlier days, was not accessible. The Yi are totally different than the Han Chinese. Our documentary shows how the Yi are living and how the mountain tribe is more and more disappearing.
In Chinese dreams, documentary maker and China expert Ruben Terlou travel further through China, driven by his fascination for the Chinese and with the rapidly changing society as a compass.
The Yi, one of the 56 official Chinese ethnic minorities, live in the mountains of southern China. Their history is complex, and their future is uncertain. Through assimilation, there is a good chance that their culture will disappear. Where do the Yi come from, and what are they looking forward to?
Ruben travels to the remote Liangshan Mountains, where he meets an unknown mountain tribe. With an age-old shamanic ritual to dislodge ghosts, Ruben is shocked that a dead cock can still cry. He also sees how the young generation is being deployed to achieve full assimilation of China’s ethnic populations.Original title: Xi en de Yi

Very good documentary. I'm from China and have read about them in books, but I've never met one in real life. Citizens outside the area don't know much about the southwestern minorities and often consider that they are all the same. This video gives me a lot of information about the Yi people. Thank you.

I could even foreseen my ethnicity gonna extinct not far future. However, if we don't learn mandarin or english how to make our life better. This is my view, weak culture gonna extinct silently.

Do you mean Yilong? I am a Naga, from North East, India, bordering Myanmar. The recent Genomics study of the Rongmei Naga people revealed, their DNA matched with the Chinese & Koreans. It is believed that we( Naga) people might have been migrated from Yunan, China during the reign of Shi-Huang-Di ( Qin dynastyv300-221BC). According to our oral history, we once lived in Mahou Taubei( Minhau). One of our folk song spoke about a famine whilst in Minhau. The main reason for ( migration of the Naga people) from China was, forced labors and floods. How far is it true. Can you shed some light on this. I'm just curious to know.

The Miao and Yi people are very similar both facing the same predicament in China. I think that its best for them to learn the Han language and culture but yet have the legal right to maintain traditions and history. The CCP shouldn't reject the fact that the Qing Dynasty took their lands and treated them as serfs and social outcasts denying them opportunities to flourish. Additionally, they shouldn't be discriminated against. My great grandfather fought in the second Miao rebellion against the Qing Dynasty, fleeing his home and moved aboard to escape persecution after the defeat.

I believe that should they have had personal freedoms and private property rights for longer, they would pull themselves up without the risk of the CCP potentially overwriting their culture with their own just as many kingdoms in china once did to other smaller cultures before.

@@zuffin1864 I'm simply stating a historical fact and reality. If you want to use America as an example American Indians and Hawaiians never wanted to be part of America but it's a historical reality that that is what happened. Would you say that Hawaiians and Native Americans are not American then? I didn't make any comment on cultural genocide whatsoever. I'm simply stating that stating that the Yi people are not Chinese is a disservice to them and simply untrue. Stating that the Yi people are not Han Chinese is correct but the term Chinesedoes not necessarily equate to being Han Chinese. It's the equivalent of saying that African-Americans are not American because they are African.

The Yi ethnics is very close to Burmese , language and culture - Burmese is the mix of Yi, Tibet and original SEA (those who arrived from Africa 6000 years ago). Yi has also their own language that is also close to Burmese language, and i think they should learn Yi language as well. And also the Lisu people spread mostly in Thailand/Vietnum are of the same group and Yi, Lisu, Ngaga are of the same group with similar language. Yi are probably one of three groups ansactors of the Burmese (Maynmar). It is sad to see that they can not learn Yi language. I feel very sad ! now Myanmar is also falling into several pieces, Lisu are also assimilaited in Thailand, the last time i visited - the 3 elders who still can speak Burmese no longer alive - the lisu children are now going to Thai schools and speak thai - they are also going disappear very soon.

You insult the dead who were systematically killed simply because they were "alien" or "worthless" to the culture that committed the crime. How is modernization in any way comparable to genocide, like slaughter of the Jews in ww2? Typical western chauvinism, blaming others for the deeds their cultures has inflicted upon others. Why must these people not be allowed access to interact with morden society? To be gawded at like a museum exhibit of a living tribe? These people are NOT being kill in any way or form.

The Nagas of North East Indian states were one of the ethnic descendants of Dian people who migrated to North West Burma somewhere between 200 BC to 100 BC when the first emperor of China, Shi Huangdi conquered the Dian kingdom in 107 BC. Miao, Yi, Hmong were also part of the ethnic groups of Dian tribes. During the Tang dynasty in 700 AD, there were lots of persecution and torture on Miao tribes which resulted in mass migration to South East Asian countries. The Nagas of India and the Yi people are of same origin. They follow animism and loves to wear Cowrie shells. They practice slash and burn cultivation and bury their deaths in a vertical position. During exorcism and rituals, animals and birds are sacrificed and the omen is predicted by looking at the parts of the hen.

Proof? I understand they all worship the buffalo horn and they live in Myanmar. Doesn't the jinpo or Singpo people also worship chiyou warlord too? Miao, mien and lahu in Myanmar seem to honor bamboo flute mouth organ music instrument alot. Naga, miao, and Dai use the gong drum while yi and mien use a wooden or cloth drum. I don't think miao fully migrated to south east asia in 700ad. At least not in laos or vietnam yet. Some were there but their mass migration to Vietnam and laos took place in 1700s-1800s and 95% of hmong who fled from the last rebellion against the chinese to laos were likely from yunnan or myanmar because hmong people from laos speak a dialect closer to yunnan miao and their rituals are closer to yunnan too. Yi and Naga both speak tibeto language. All Naga, yi, miao and mien use chicken parts to foretell fortune during sacrafice. Provide your source please?
