vPub Live - The Ignored Pt.6

First things first - yes, I know I promised you a Roddy session. Unfortunately our favourite whisky guru is currently laid up nursing himself back to health. He was sure he'd be fine for a remote dial-in this week, but we decided best to get him back to full health and have him here live. We'll raise a wee glass to him Thursday.
So, a quick glance ahead to see what I could quickly pull forward and this was closest. We last covered this in September and we're slowly ticking through the list of distilleries that, for whatever reason, seems to get next to no airtime on the vPub, despite having releases available - sometimes lots of them. They're not hidden gems, they're not under-the-radar, they are simply walked past.
So, while I'm still deciding what the final bottle line-up will be, have a think about the distilleries out there, despite plenty of offerings available, you choose to ignore.

Enjoyed watching the rerun. Hopefully I can make one of these vpubs live. Always great to see new bottles to try. Also had to comment that I agree with @Anthony Lambert that the WOOK is too much of an attention seeker.

Hmmm... I hear that, when we don't know who they are or what they want to say, how much attention do they actually want to seek? I remain hopeful that they operate well within their comfortable limits of generosity and that they're using these gestures to be grateful for a perceived value. The dynamic may be a strange one for me to handle and respond to, but there's no doubt it's making a measurable difference to what I do. Thank you Ivar, I appreciate you catching it!

Balblair 15 is one of the 5 bottles we brought back from our trip to Scotland after tasting it in the Amber Bar. Loved it.

I feel the problem with Auchentoshan is the same regarding Jura. Our local whisky society has had wonderfull IB from Jura. But the OBs doesn't seem to do the trick. It's a shame and we have discussed it at more then one occasion. Maybe it's marketing overruling the cask management and it may work "for the masses. There must be a point to be found in there. I'm sipping a dram of Auchentoshan from the SMWS and it is absolutely gorgeous. At least it still shows that there is magic to be found from the distillery.

I got my first on the quiz because of Mike and Roy's hints, and because I put the chat on as I watched the replay. But y'know what? I'm taking it because I share a birthday with Roy as well!! If you visit Annandale, it's worth picking up the sampler pack with the two new-makes (unpeated and peated) which are fabulous, and a Man O' Words and a Man O' Swords. £35 from memory.

Some interesting insights into ignored whiskies. Sometimes it takes a well-presented and well-priced IB to bring a distillery to our attention. Happy Birthday for Sunday, Roy! Cheers!

Great chill vPub, Roy! Regarding whisky clubs; I did the Four Corners of Johnnie Walker with mine last weekend. Since we can't go to the JW experience and all the distillery visitor centers in Scotland, I gave them my own rendition of John Walker & Sons and the overall brand's history, and that of each distillery (the latter being largely gleaned from the ever trusty Malt Whisky Yearbook). We all pitched in together to buy the respective single malts and a bottle of JW Black Label 12yo. We had to improvise with the grain component though, and actually learned a lot out of it. We concluded that Bain's single grain (which although only about 6 years old is double matured sequentially in first fill ex-bourbon casks), is far too sweet and rich to be able to work as a substitute for the grain component in JW (presumably Cameronbridge?) So, even though the grain should have been the main component when we attempted to "reconstruct" the blend (and I know we are only doing it with a handful of whiskies which is unrealistic, but it's the thought that counts), we ended up using a lot less of it, and actually got quite close to the Black Label to be honest with you! It was a very fun experience even though none of the whiskies are necessarily the most stunning (although let's be honest, the Caol Ila and the Clynelish are still winners in my books). It's something that I would never have done on my own and I'm thankful for being able to share the experience. PS HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

Terrific and great fun stuff Willem achieving a lot of understanding in one session; blending, interactionof spirit, location, ownership... all of it. Great thing to do with people coming together too!

Hi Roy, thanks for another great vPub! Like most vPubs, I had to watch the replay because I usually work on Fridays and I need a clear head. Saw you last Sunday in Limburg, you walked up to the Thompson stand just as I was tasting their very nice Festival blend. I wanted to say hello but I didn't want to interrupt your chat with the Dornoch Duo (I know there are actually more people working there, one of them was kind enough to pour me a dram after I bought the bottle). Unfortunately, when you were done chatting, you walked off at a brisk pace, and as I'm no stalker, I did not follow; maybe next time I'll shake your hand. Have a very nice birthday tomorrow! I hope to celebrate mine on Thursday by going on a little motorbike tour. So again, I'll have to watch the replay. Many more happy, healthy years and 'proost' from a Dutchman in Germany!

Another great episode, Roy. I discovered Glen Garioch 12 about 5 years ago or so and it is indeed a gem. Never had any of their others but just picked an independent bottling of a 6 year old, which will be interesting to try.

Another great vid Roy. Happy Birthday too !! Yes, I'm a sucker for the F&F too with the (current) set, & yes, all open :) Difficult to get all in Aus.. Like you, I cant believe that they just dont release at 46% or even CS, with as little done to it as possible, surely all the cost savings would make the most bottom line sense without all the 'extras ?!?!

Catching up on the vpub. And then the Benrinnes pops up. Funny, I just recieved a sample of Adelphi Benrinnes. Haven't tasted it yet but nosed it and the nose is fantastic. Otherwise I have always "ignored" Auchentoshan for some reason even thou people around me said it is good. I never felt the urge to pick up a bottle.

I finished one bottle of Balblair 15 yo, and managed to pick up two more bottles for nz$118.74, aprox 67 pounds, so quite a happy whisky hunter.

nz prices: Auchentoshan Sauvignon Blanc Cask: ~UKP68, 1 retailer only. Balblair 15: ~UKP76-90. One retailer has old stock at 71, dating from a couple of years ago when others were selling it closer to ~60. Benrinnes F&F 15: ~UKP71. Three websites with the same street address. I'd love to try it but that (line) price puts one's nose out of joint. Strathisla 12: ~UKP48, long sold out. Strathisla G&M 2009, ~UKP64, sold out. Annandale 2018s: ~UKP77-79.

Terrific insight into what's happening there, that's quite a huike on the prices in Europe jbar, I feel for you. All the more reason for you to work as part of the community and their experiences to mitigate exposure to lesser bottles charging too much! thanks for joining in!

Thanks, Roy. I (lazily) haven't done a methodical comparison/sampling along lines similar to Phil & Deepa's market costings, but the general impression is that nz prices are nowhere near as steep as those found in Australia--due to taxes there, although they also have shocking gouging on rarities like JA Mitchell bottlings--but still a notch or two higher than UK/Europe. The latter are seeing discounting in the last year or so that I don't expect to see here simply due to small market size and lack of competition, but I may be wrong. The above nz prices may be a bit higher than other nz prices simply because those are "the ignored"/[s]low turnover? Enjoy your nas Sunday.😉

The lowest price I found in Switzerland for Benrinnes 15 is 79 CHF (69pounds). But I can find Ledaig 10 for 48 CHF (42.3 pounds) a fantastic price for such a good whisky. Do you think Benrinnes is worth the price to buy in my country?
