Ok. At first, I was disappointed that Emma stone won the oscar instead of lily Gladstone. But after watching a little bit of poor things, I have to admit Emma did a phenomenal job. It was much much better than lala land. She really nailed this movie poor things. Lily was also good though

Fun fact : The scene Bella slapped Wedderburn was not originally scripted. It happened on an impromptu basis.

I think that the whole crew had a lot of fun while producing that movie. It shows. To me, this movie is but some sort of a modern interpretation of what Voltaire wanted to say with his piece "Candide", at least to an extend. I understand it as an homage or nod to that story. Actually, I wonder why Candide hasn't been made a movie yet. However, with Poor Things now out, a Candide movie project now has some very high standards to meet.

I love that Wedderburn/Ruffalo was portrayed as clinging but not full on toxix like the husband. He apologized for holding her arm too tightly and when she slaps him, he is stunned, and just says " ow" like a true man. Its just that his iwn conditioning, insecurities ( hes the only one that judges her prostitution) make him want to possess what he 'loves' while Godwin and Max, both set her free. And doing so, there is no rupture, she stays in touch with postcards and eventually returns.

Mark Ruffalo was so brilliant in the character he created in this film - it really made the whole movie for me, which otherwise would have felt a tad too uncomfortable and deranged to enjoy. He brought a very complex character to life, which brought a lot of charisma and authentic vulnerability to the film. It also added an element where I was always on edge, afraid he would go too far (in many ways if this were real life he did go too far 😂) and harm Bella, but he really didn’t. He added a lot of warmth, emotion and life to a film that was otherwise mechanical, scientific and deranged. He was brilliant!

@@charles_preston I thought of the movie as a unique take on feminism. It presents its message in a subtle way and without shoving it down your throat. I also just really like the story of this movie and how it’s presented. I like the progression of how Bella Baxter learns about the world and how she grows as a character throughout the whole movie. Poor Things also has a memorable score, amazing cinematography, great set design and costumes, and great visuals. The dialogue and characters in this movie were also memorable too, with great performances by the whole cast in this movie

It's Yorgos's style. I think it works for this film, given how weird and dissonant the world is. Don't you think the strange choice of camera lens fits in with other strange choices like the music that plays during the dancing scene?

I've only seen two of his films The Killing of a Sacred Dear and The Favourite and I didn't see that being used in either ( though maybe briefly in Favourite?) I feel like it pulls me away from what's going on and I haven't seen poor things cuz I can't really judge it that much just from this only but it takes me out of the movie. Just my opinion
@jessicafb5398
@jessicafb5398 Ай бұрын
I really thought that pigeon that flew in the room when they were banging for the first time, was some sort of mechanical camera that God had sent. And that each time we saw the fisheye, it was God watching. Turns out Yorgos just likes fisheye, because it sort of makes the viewer feel confined, like they’re right there in the scene with what’s happening.
@looney1023
@looney1023 Ай бұрын
It's used pretty extensively in The Favourite because it captures the entirety of those huge, empty corridors in a way that distorts it and makes the characters feel oppressively small. I think it's an incredible creative choice for the kind of satire Yorgos is always playing in.@@michaelwirick1849
