Synopsis: When Earth falls under attack from invincible aliens, no military unit in the world is able to beat them. Maj. William Cage (Tom Cruise), an officer who has never seen combat, is assigned to a suicide mission. Killed within moments, Cage finds himself thrown into a time loop, in which he relives the same brutal fight -- and his death -- over and over again. However, Cage's fighting skills improve with each encore, bringing him and a comrade (Emily Blunt) ever closer to defeating the aliens.

I was just thinking as I watched this clip that I normally find movies/shows with a repetitive time plot pretty boring pretty quickly, but this movie managed to defy that and you're spot on about the editing playing a key role in that.

This was a WAY better movie than most people give credit. I'm not even a fan of Cruise, but I thought he and Blunt were exceptional in this film. Because of the time-loop montage, his skill bump felt earned, his character arc hit deeper, and even the "we're going on a suicide mission with a man we just met a few hours ago" scene was natural. Honestly, I hope they DON'T make a sequel, b/c how do you improve on this ending?

Biggest plot point in this whole film is that she would have absolutely no way of knowing if she actually did lose her powers without dying and not reseting the day. Who is to say she isnt reseting the day in her timeline everytime she dies on the beach.

Easily the best Tom Cruise movie ever made (yes, better than the Top Guns). I could see this working with a different lead actor, but he does a great job and the story is great. Without a powerful mechanical exoskeleton suit, the short little Tom Cruise is just 110% unbelievable as an action hero. But this works and works well.

Someone remind me. While Toms character is resetting with each death. Whats happening to the timeline he leaves behind? The trainer hes with, acts surprisingly cool to shoot him to reset him. Wouldnt that doom her timeline, or does the entire universe run off just Toms characters timeline? Never understood this.

Not explicitly stated from what I remember. You could take his one death by being crushed when he rolls under the truck to mean the timeline continues but it's equally likely that's just there for comedic effect rather than to actually mean that. Given how they don't have qualms restarting, it's likely meant to simply be that once he dies that timeline doesn't come to be since he goes back and changes things.

Read the manga. Technically you are right. The aliens are robots who were programmed to terraform the planet and prepare it for the aliens arrival. They don't see or care that the humans are intelligent because the creators didn't put a condition in for that. Maybe. It has been a while since I read the manga. To answer your question, the aliens were capable of space travel but I don't think they were capable of faster than light travel. So they were advanced enough to set up temporal gateways to send back defeats from the future. If it helps, think of it as a simulation, or a possible future. It allows them to adapt and grow, like the human who remembers what happens in the future too.

It is the same for the aliens. At the beginning, they lost and lost badly. There are many worlds where humanity wins and only in these iterations where they start winning. It is funny when you think that the aliens are just mindlessly following orders to make the world habitable for their creators. Ironic since if the creators were able to realize there were intelligent life on the planet, they may or may not proceed or choose another planet. Also, since it was shot millions of years in the past, it is unlikely they understood the planet would produce alien life. I forgot when they shot the probe with the robots. I got the impression it was before human life was alive so their scans probably found the planet suitable.

The movie doesn't explain and since it only has around 120 minutes, doesn't have enough time to. The reason is that it adds more variables. If he dies, then time will reset. If they both have the ability, then it resets if either of them die. Imagine almost killing the Omega and it takes out one of the two and resets. It now has double the chance of a reset. The manga is better since she keeps her power. In some ways the movie is better because the end of the manga wasn't great. It ended well, but it was dark.

Yes. The movie makes changes I did not like. The manga ending was weird and I liked the movie ending better. It still wasn't great but the manga ending was bleak.
