The Vulcan returning to Brize Norton having displayed at Filton Families Day,Bristol that afternoon. Just before her final approach, she overflew Brize and carried out a high performance climb resulting in a wonderful unique howl!!

No its not a fault, it is an unintended characteristic of her devestatingly powerful engines. The howl has become her trademark, and her war cry. The last of the truly great V Bombers - you will not see her like again, and you won't hear anything like her again. Awe inspiring aircraft.

the book Vulcan 607 is a brilliant read it explains how we nearly didn't do it as well as how we did and why the chose the offset bombing procedure as opposed to running down the centre line one of the issues with the gulf war and the JP233 was a simple if you run down the centre line you are going to get raked to pieces by the guns they place to shoot along it...

From an engineer on the Vulcan XH558 Facebook page ... "The 'howl' is caused by resonace of air being rapidly sucked into the engine intakes, the noise of which rebounds back in a narrowish field directly to the front and sides of the aircraft once full power is applied. Contary to popular belief, it is not actually noise from the engines, but as a result of them".

Sadly they almost all missed and the runway wasnt damaged enough. I read the book and watched the documentry. Fantastic aircraft though. A true classic.

Only British Governments allow masterpieces of Aeronautical engineering like Vulcan, Concorde, Harrier, TSR2 and others to simply fade away without a thought of how to inspire future generations..... Just imagine: Its the opening ceremony of the Olympic games this year and over the rooftops at low level comes The Red Arrows in Delta formation with Concorde ...followed by Vulcan with Harriers at her wingtips. No one could top THAT anywhere in the world!

Also, The runway WAS sufficiently damaged to prevent FAST JETs from using it which had been the primary concern. This forced them to operate from the mainland. It was still operational for transport and cargo aircraft, but they can operate from far rougher strips than Mirage or Skyhawk Jets.

@Pedro C. Intersting you mention that. the delta wing was actually ripped-off by the Americans, along with the jet engine, the supercomputer, the silo and lots of other innovations. The incidents occurred in the 50's decades ahead of Nighthawk.

Actually, This is a very common misconception. The bombs were deliberately released at an angle at intervals of 0.5 seconds. This meant that there could only possibly be one direct impact, or two straddling the runway. This was the intention. This is standard procedure for runway destruction. Exactly the same technique was used by the RAF in the first Gulf War using the Tornado and JP233, which was the most advanced anti-runway system in the world.

Is the howl a fault, I mean I'm glad it does it but is it harmful in any way to the flying characteristics ?

Is that why out of 8 Vulcans the USAF only managed to spot 1 during Operation Skyshield. IF it had been a real attack you'd all be spending pounds and drinking tea right now. Remember where all of your aviation prowess came from. It was only recently that you managed to design your own VTOL jet, you were using Harriers until the late 1990's (possibly 2000's).

I kinda agree and the trouble is todays airforces (and public opinion) prefers a small strike aircraft to drop one bomb through one building taking out the insurgents inside rather than a fully loaded B-52 chucking a hundred 500 pound bombs over an area!
