VW 1.8t 20v build, O2j gearbox tare down and OBX LSD rebuild and prep

Getting into the transmission on my VW build, this video goes though the disassembly of the gearbox as well as rebuilding the chinese OBX differential with better components so that it will hopefully last a while.

You say bumbling through it...but, you did it. Thank you for you time that you invested in making this video. There’s a lot of us out here that want to do this project. Plus while in there, a person could put in that euro 5th gear upgrade.

I’m rebuilding my 02A atm , full bearings, reverse idle gear, 1st / 2nd syncro hub due to reverse damage to it. Wavtrac lsd, brass for bushings.

I’m working my way through all the videos as I get time. I’m using a Passat AEB and transaxle in a mid-engine 54 Beetle. Just wondering if anyone else would be interested in a water pump pulley to delete the power steering pump? Love your story and love the low budget

Transmissions aren’t fun lol. The only thing holding back my 400hp talon build. Have to find a decent clutch and get my flywheel stepped I believe. Great video as always.

How do you put the transmission in gear if it’s already taken out of the car I’m rebuilding my transmission now and I’m having that issue because when I try to take the 5th gear off like at the beggining of the video everything rotates inside the transmission

Great video, very interesting stuff. When you diecided on LSD why did you choose Torsen style? Was it purely because it was the only budget option available? Or if you had the option would you have choosen clutch type LSD?

It was a budget choice for sure, and although I have had time to upload the next video I ran into some issues with the diff that most guys won't be able to solve in their garages. So for that reason I really can't recommend them.

Hi great video 👍🏼 . Would you recommend changing the slave cylinder when replacing a transmission from a salvage yard? I’m not seeing any signs of leakage but I don’t know the history of the vehicle. It is a OEM though. Thank you

Yes, absolutely. On these 02J 5 speeds, it's very easy since the slave cylinder is external to the transmission (it bolts in right on top by the shift tower)

Im still watching the video as i type. But the jump when the diff popped on the press. I dont care what anyone says the more you get ready for it. the more you'll jump. Hydro presses can be scary

I don’t really do this, I was just doing to show my learning process while I did my tranny... I’m way too busy making parts to take on work that I’m not that good at... lol!

I have a 1.8 2 vt as well with now currently after mild build 260 hp and 515 nm ( torque) i like to rebuild my gearbox and searching for a afortabile lsd dif to make this myself. Can u give me the link of where you have buyed this dif at? And maybe a link of the restoration kit of all the barings and pinion bearing inside the grearbox . With kind regards Robbin

Yeah, this is why I'm going with a Wavetrac for my 02J transmission. This is totally not worth the effort for a $200 savings for an inferior Taiwan LSD.

The problem with these builds is when something goes wrong and you will only know when you have finished the car. Its no fun trying to find the dealer who sold you a diff a year and a half later and do the "remember me?" routine...

i never realized the importance of looking into the lense 'til this instructional. sadly, the jeebies won't allow me to benefit from this vid. it's as though he's under hypnosis or heavy trans or infected with an evolved t-strain. i mean the info's there, just the eyes aren't.
