Great video. I haven't done drum brakes in 30 years and was trying to remember all the stuff my dad taught me. This helped me remember for my new 74 beetle. The one thing I remembered well that he taught me, and this was before you could easily snap a cell phone pic of something like this, was to always do one wheel at a time. That way if you couldn't remember how all the springs go you could look at the other wheel. I think half the reason I got this car is to bring back fond memories of working on older cars (that were not that old back when I was working on them) lol 😆

You just through a bunch of good memories my way. I was 15 working at an gas station and the mechanic told me when there is more than one of anything do it one at a time if you can. Then you have a reference. I use that one lesson on everything. So many people just rip and tear stuff apart and then realize they have a mess and lose out of a lot of fun. Thank you for pulling me into memory lane. Take care, Tony

Man, what a great video! I watched it and went out and successfully removed my front drums and all parts. I replaced the wheel cylinders and repacked the bearings, too. Replaced the ruptured soft lines and replaced the corroded hard lines. A first for me on all I touched today! Thanks to guys like you, guys like me can do it! Back brakes are next after Easter. :-)

Awesome video AND job for an alleged NON MECHANIC, you really kept it at a good speed along with good comments while showing the order and proper placement of the parts; It took me about 3 hours because the brake line connector would not thread on to the cylinder; it was a horrible feeling; I took a tea break, reviewed your video then went back to the job and it went well; I value good work!

I just want to add, my car is a 74 Karmann Ghia in fairly good condition, I'm the third owner; however after my purchase I noticed the brakes were not working the way they should (for me it's a feeling you develop with VW's after you've owned several) I purchased it in Louisville KY and drove it to West Palm Beach (stopover) then on to Mia for shipment to Puerto Rico. I PR I replaced the Master brake cylinder then attacked the rear brakes and found the right rear was seized with rust, the brake's were actually good; this coming weekend I'll do the left rear and bleed the system; although your video was on a beetle, the rear brakes are the same on Karmann Ghias (drums); the video is truly great, well put together and very helpful. I'll keep you posted on my results (and whatever else I find), thanks again!!

Thanks for the great Instruction. My Experience: Those "C-Clips for the Pins are def. subject to wear... One fell off my Bus on the freeway, and it made for some very exciting drama. (Some of the parts that were damaged (parking brake parts) are NOT available except at a salvage yard - if you're lucky). These clips are not hardened, and they DO wear, and I don't think they are easily or properly replaceable using other-type modern-style "c-clips. The proper ones are fortunately obtainable at most car-parts stores cheap.... By Ordering. of course. After thinking about it, I decided to use nuts-and-bolts, which seem much more righteous to me.

A common step that gets overlooked is to notice the location of the SLANTED notch in the adjuster. If the slant isn't turned so it will persuade the shoes toward the wheel cylinder,not only will it cause a good drum to be hard to get over the shoes,but more important,the adjuster end of the shoes will wear down before the cylinder end even starts to wear in .I'm old, but still see it. Back in the day,someone said "The reliner must have put too much lining on these shoes". Just flip the notch 180 degrees.

I can see where it looks like that because of the emergency brake but it’s not touching it at all. I never noticed that shot angle so great question. When or if you end up doing one you will definitely see plenty of space. If I would of turned the adjuster on the back like I did the front you would of been able to tell it wasn’t on it. Thank you for watching and bringing that to my attention. I need to work better on my camera angles 😆 Take care and have a great weekend, Tony

What year beetle is this video for? And the star adjusters, which way opens or closes? Thankyou.
@HowYouCanDoItToo
@HowYouCanDoItToo 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, it’s a 1970. It can be a little confusing because each star adjustment will go in different directions because there is two on each tire. The top will go one direction to tighten and the bottom will go totally opposite. To add to confusion when you jump to other side will go opposite of other. Here’s a short video on the best way I found to do it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p9aYmcJltL-0l4U.html

great vid I followed your instructions however air keeps getting in to the system as I am bleeding it and I do not know where it is coming from I also installed an new master cylinder is it possible it is bad?
@HowYouCanDoItToo
@HowYouCanDoItToo 7 жыл бұрын
Is your fluid leaking down as well. The reason I ask this is I was getting air in mine and right beside my driver seat had a small pin hole in the brake line. I couldn't see it and it was leaking under the seat. This line is running along the right side of the seat. I would also check for a line being loose. I could be possible it is at your master cylinder. One more thing it does take a while to bleed the air out when you replace the master cylinder. Please keep me informed if you find where it is coming from.
@rioraton
@rioraton 7 жыл бұрын
The air was coming in thru the bleeder valves and thru the break light switch on front of the MC so I put teflon tape on bleeders and break ligh switch and It appears to have stoped the air getting into the system there is still very very very small bubbles still but I was told that is not abnormal and at some point rebleed and they should disappear? Brakes seem to be working good?

How often should you replace wheel cylinder
@HowYouCanDoItToo
@HowYouCanDoItToo 6 жыл бұрын
If the rubber parts look like they are getting dry rotted and notice you are losing brake fluid and running down the backside of your tire rim, I would replace. They are real cheap and if you are replacing your brake shoes I would go ahead a replace if it were me. But as far as an estimated time or mileage I couldn't tell you. I would say environment, how often you drive, how long it's been sitting, ect. to many variables. Hope this little bit helps you. Take care...Tony
